Letter: Knockoff sites pose risk to security, not Facebook

Editor, The article in Wednesday's Daily Lobo headlined "CIRT blocks access to Facebook.com" reiterates the University's policy of doing whatever it wants and then making up reasons that have no grounding in reality. The reasons given for blocking the site are all founded on a false correlation between the UNM Facebook and the original Facebook or on untruths about unsolicited e-mail.

Making history despite losses

Staff Report The Lobo volleyball team was unable to get a whole lot going against a tough 16th-ranked BYU team Saturday. The Cougars swept all three games, solidifying their place as one of the top teams in the nation. It was the first time the Lobos had been shut out this season since Sept 3.

Letter: CIRT concerns unfounded; Facebook protects users

Editor, I read the Daily Lobo's article Wednesday about CIRT blocking access to Facebook.com from the UNM network. I would like to say that CIRT's argument against Facebook has to be the worst argument I've heard in a long while. CIRT worries that students who use Facebook are required to use their UNM net ID to register with Facebook, and additionally they express concern that this could lead to identity theft and stalking.

Trying to pinpoint why faculty leave

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Faculty Senate may begin conducting exit interviews for faculty who leave the University. An exit interview is a interview given to a departing employee to find out information about a company that might be hard to obtain while the employee works for the company.

Future looks bright for tennis star, wide receiver

by David J. Chavez Daily Lobo Iva Gersic - There are a few UNM athletes ranking among the best in the nation, but one stands out like a student walking around campus wearing a New Mexico State Aggies jersey - only Gersic stands out in a good way. Gersic gets better every season and shows no sign of becoming another women's tennis player who is stuck somewhere between being ranked in the top 100 and getting a new career.

Athletics director retires

by Katy Knapp Daily Lobo Rudy Davalos is retiring after 13 years as Athletics Director at UNM. He said the decision to retire on Aug. 31, 2006, was a tough one, but he felt it was the right time. "I always wanted to leave when the program was on top," he said Tuesday at the UNM Board of Regents meeting.

Letter: Homecoming shouldn't have priority over world disasters

Editor, It was indeed sad for me to come to school on Monday and see what the story on the cover page of the Daily Lobo was. I find it depressing that the priorities of some of the members of the UNM community lay more on the tests and difficulties of the Homecoming events and not in the more than 20,000 people who died in Pakistan this weekend or the hundreds who were buried alive in the mudslide in Guatemala.

Lobos a target at No. 1

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Senior defender Matt Wootton said he knows what teams are thinking when they play the No. 1-ranked UNM men's soccer team. After all, he was in their shoes last year when the Lobos were getting ready to play then-No. 1-ranked Indiana University.

Column: Pollution linked to illness

by Maceo Carrillo Martinet Daily Lobo columnist Many different cultures have adopted the belief that the environment is an extension of who we are as a people. Never does this type of relationship ring more true than when we compare environmental pollution with the pollution we carry in our bodies - when we pollute the environment we are ultimately polluting ourselves.

CIRT blocks access to Facebook.com

by Caleb Fort Daily Lobo Nikiyah Gill tried to visit Facebook.com from Dane Smith Hall last week, but a message popped up saying the page could not be found. After she tried to visit the site from two more computers, she decided to call CIRT. CIRT told her she could not visit the site using the UNM network, she said.

Four athletes seize the chance to strut their stuff

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Chelsea Sondrup - The middle blocker for the UNM volleyball team has been part of a team that's already had its best season under four-year head coach Kelley McKee - and there's still at least 12 games left. Sondrup's penchant for sending volleyballs back to opposing teams with return-to-sender stamps has helped her set the career record for blocks this season.

Letter: U.S. Constitution doesn't license absolute liberty

Editor, I read an article saying that Southwest Airlines asked a passenger to cover up or turn inside out a shirt with profanities about the president and vice president. Various groups - who obviously have no idea about the meaning of the American Constitution - raised the usual arguments of free speech.

After 3rd loss, Lobos still hopeful

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Coming into the 2005 season, the Lobos were picked to finish second in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll. After a three-game losing streak, the team has a mediocre record of 3-3 and sits tied for fourth place with the University of Utah in the MWC.

Letter: Forgetting Afghanistan a recipe for disaster

Many political commentators bemoan the lack of coverage of the cost of the war in Iraq, even as the number of American soldiers killed there inexorably approaches 2,000 - one writer this week even compared the level of public awareness of the Iraq war to that of the "forgotten" Korean War.

Letter: Time has come for Muslims to unite against violence

Editor, I feel compelled to respond to Ahmad Musleh's letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo, since I fear many who only listen to the politically correct media fail to grasp the true perniciousness of Muslim terrorism. Sunni Muslims are savagely killing Shiite Muslims.

Letter: Crosswalk rules rooted in pedestrian legislation

Editor, Below is a response to the letter in Thursday's Daily Lobo, "Students at crosswalks oblivious to lines of cars." Mike Tandysh, the phenomenon you noticed is properly called "crosswalk use," which is in fact a New Mexico Legislature-given right. Behold, New Mexico Statutory Chapter 66, Article 7, Section 334, subdivision A: 66-7-334.
