Lobo men almost defeat University of Wyoming

The UNM men's basketball team was a hair's breadth of coming away from Wyoming with an upset victory on Saturday. The Lobos played their best game of the season in challenging the University of Wyoming down to the final moments. However, a 10-point lead with under four minutes to play was not safe as the Cowboys stormed back to tie the game 71-71 on a Donta Richardson three-pointer with 2.

Archuleta still heads presidential search

Despite his term ending as a UNM regent, David Archuleta will remain chairman of the Presidential Search Committee. Archuleta, whose term expired early this month, has been the chairman of three different search committees since 1997. He said that the search is progressing very well, with 55 applications already in.

Engineering Department scores a Top Tier listing

Representatives from the Xilinx corporation presented UNM's Electrical and Computer Engineering Department with a plaque during a ceremony acknowledging UNM as a Top Tier Xilinx university. The plaque was awarded in recognition of outstanding work. Six other Universities were also recognized as being in the Top Tier.

Lobos sweep tennis matches

The UNM men's tennis team shook off the cobwebs from a long winter break this weekend and responded to the tune of impressive victories over the University of San Francisco and Northern Arizona University. On Saturday, the Lobos started the spring season sweeping San Francisco by a score of 7-0.

Goodman discusses anti-war movement

For her work on the radio documentaries "Drilling and Killing: Chevron and Nigeria's Oil Dictatorship" and "MASSACRE: The Story of East Timor," Amy Goodman has received a laundry list of awards. The accolades include: the George Polk Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Prize for International Reporting and the Armstrong Award, to name just a few.

In conjunction with anti-war protests in more than 60 cities worldwide, Albuquerque staged a series of activities Saturday, which ended with a speech from award-winning radio journalist and political activist Amy Goodman. As host of Democracy Now!, a show heard weekdays by millions on National Public Radio, Goodman is at home with an audience.

Hnida takes huge step for women's athletics

The fuss has died down, but the fact remains -- UNM football head coach Rocky Long made the decision to let third-string kicker Katie Hnida kick an extra point during the Las Vegas Bowl. That decision made Hnida the first woman to play in a Division I-A football game.

Editor, Over the past two years, I've noticed a steady decline in the quality of the Daily Lobo (a.k.a. the "Low Blow"). In particular, I was offended by a sexually explicit photo found as part of an early-December issue article's content. The inclusion of this photo was unnecessary, juvenile sensationalism.

Lobo fans crowd bowl game

The sea of cherry and silver that donned Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev., on Christmas Day last month seemed appropriate. It helped that the University of Nevada at Las Vegas' school colors is scarlet and grey, but the throng of UNM fans at the Sega Sports Las Vegas Bowl could have made any Rebel fan feel at home.

Redondo Drive still closed off

UNM students will have to endure the closure of Redondo Drive at the crosswalk north of the UNM Bookstore for a few more weeks after a broken water pipe caused a slight delay in construction. The utility trench work was delayed during the semester break when a 10-inch water pipe was broken Jan.
