Staff Report Former UNM English professor Louis Owens died Thursday, Aug. 27, from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, said Albuquerque Sunport spokeswoman Maggie Santiago. Owens was found in his car at the Sunport parking lot with a pistol and a note asking that his wife be notified.

Representatives from UNM and Sandia National Laboratories gathered Wednesday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Advanced Materials Laboratory, a center for collaborative research in technical developments. Editor, I am writing regarding the political cartoon in your July 25 edition of the Daily Lobo. This is on page 4, in your “Opinion” section. I am frankly disgusted and appalled at this cartoon, depicting two Middle Eastern men, one saying to the other “You ever wonder why Israelis strap their bombs to jets instead of people?” while the other man has a bomb strapped to his back.
Editor, Has our school opened a new department for strip clubs such as TD’s and Fantasy World, so that they can advertise on an entire page of the Daily Lobo and welcome us back to school? Is this an attractive way to adorn the cover page of a university newspaper that people look at as a hallmark of what is going on? Are we so down in money and funding Daily Lobos that we are only one step away from the out-loud porn ads? These ads keep the money going, true, but what about the ethics — or is that an old subject and belongs to the past? I believe being supported by the above mentioned clubs and printing their ads consistently in the Daily Lobo is not only an insult to all the women at UNM, but also defies the purpose of a university as an advocate of an educational organization.
Everyone’s doing retro pop these days. The ’60s are long gone, but pop from that era is all over the place. But left out of that is psychedelic pop — that LSD-fueled sub-genre that Pink Floyd started out in before building The Wall. Leave it to The Flaming Lips to make sure that psychedelic pop is represented.
Because of record sales and profits set by the New Mexico Lottery Authority this year, Lance Ross, spokesman for the authority, said that the future of the Lottery Scholarship has been ensured for a "long time." "Every dollar of net revenue and profit helps ensure the longevity of the program," Ross said.

Editor, To all those whining about the TD's ads in the Lobo, I have to be blunt and say grow up. There is such a thing as free speech in America. Is that freedom to advertise limited to the ads these complainers like or approve of? Please tell me that the First Amendment got modified to shelter us college kids from the evils of strip club ads.
