Track and field: Lobos open the season with strong individual showings

Several New Mexico athletes posted personal bests over the weekend at the New Mexico Invitational. The Lobos did not post the top team score in either the men’s or women’s division at the meet, but did notch some high scores throughout the day. Head coach Joe Franklin said he was impressed by many of the performances, some of which were pleasant surprises. “I really liked the fact that we had some kids that came out and competed really hard and when they least expect it, great things happen,” he said.

Letter: The Daily Lobo should be challenging its readers, not pandering to them

Perhaps the only thing Justin Davis got right in his opinion piece is that the Daily Lobo seems to be rather preoccupied with vapid stories while ignoring discussion of meaningful sociopolitical, scientific and technological matters. I will not devote space to excoriating Justin Davis’ opinion piece, as the errors there can be reasonably identified by anyone with a knack for sorting empirical evidence out of the jungle of opinion, belief and myth. It is unfortunate that the Daily Lobo has become a forum for tirelessly pandering to the sports and entertainment culture while carefully avoiding coverage of controversial subjects that may make some readers uncomfortable (challenges to one’s worldview, after all, have a tendency to create a level of discomfort.)

Letter: Gun ownership more dangerous to the wielder than any criminal

In New York two brothers, both of them police officers, had 10 years of spotless records as cops. They got into an awful argument. One brother shot and killed his drunk brother. If anyone, weeks before, could have told these two brothers when they were arresting other people that one would shoot and kill the other, how would they have believed it? If anyone, weeks earlier, could have told Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius that he would shoot and kill his girlfriend, how would he have believed it?

UNM's School of Law ranked first in the country

A recent issue of preLaw Magazine named the University of New Mexico School of Law as number one in the country for public defenders and prosecutors. The magazine listed the school high on the list because of its strong faculty, curriculum and financial help for the students, according to a UNM press release. The study is based 50 percent on employment, 40 percent on curriculum and 10 percent on financial. Financial itself is 40 percent based on public salary, 40 percent debt and 20 percent on a Loan Repayment Assistance Program, according to the release.

Women's Basketball: Slow start plagues UNM against Boise State

A 23-point performance from New Mexico’s senior forward Khadijah Shumpert was to no avail as UNM fell 81-60 to Boise State on Saturday afternoon. Head coach Yvonne Sanchez said in her postgame press conference that her squad did not get off to the start it needed in order to be successful against the Broncos. “When you’ve got a team that good that has its way early you’re in trouble,” Sanchez said. “It was exactly the kind of start we knew we had to avoid.”

Men's Basketball: Second place on the line Saturday

New Mexico’s next slate of games could have implications on the seeding process for the Mountain West in March. A peek at the schedule shows two road games against the conference’s top two teams – Boise State and San Diego State – with a suddenly streaking UNLV squad sandwiched in between. With the Lobos currently sitting in third in the standings, Saturday’s contest with the Broncos will be for possession second place.

AJ Styles in the WWE. That sentence itself is hard enough to fathom but it became reality when Styles was announced as the third entry in this past Sunday’s Royal Rumble. Women's Basketball: Defense leads the way to New Mexico route in Colorado Springs

New Mexico's defensive prowess was once again on display in one of the best team performances the Lobos have had all year. Things were clicking on the offensive side of the ball for New Mexico in its 63-33 victory over Air Force on Wednesday. However, holding the Falcons to just eight points in the first half was the main reason why UNM walked out of Colorado Springs with a victory.

Local business lets gamers play for a profit

Video games have always been a passion for Jason Montoya and Simon Kubiak. The two longtime friends played video games on a regular basis growing up, and Montoya used to hold weekly tournaments at his parent’s house during high school. Those events got so big that eventually Montoya had to find an actual venue for hosting tourneys. That love for video games has now led Montoya and Kubiak to start up Stream House ABQ, the idea of the company is to give gamers a chance to actually become professionals by livestreaming games and creating YouTube content while living in Stream House.

Welcome Back Days at UNM are a way for students, both new and returning, to learn about all UNM has to offer. For the occasion, the Student Union Building Atrium was filled with bright booths, signs and students lured by free drinks and curiosity. Ryan Lindquist, associate director for the Student Activities Center, said that the event takes place on two different days, Jan. 20 and 27. The first day was centered around Greek life and departments, Lindquist said. It was directed towards the entire UNM community (faculty, staff and students), letting everyone know what department resources are on campus and giving students the opportunity to learn about Greek life.
