Academia holds power, incarceration is necessary

Editor, Very few people would argue that bad behavior always results from bad intent. So it is puzzling that in Friday’s Peer Review, Veena Patel claims that “The coupling of neuroscience and law allows us to update our ethical system to understand that bad behavior isn’t always bad intention.” The apparently unexamined aspect of this notion that an ethical code is in need of updating is a bit disconcerting, as is the implication that we all are in need of top-down enlightenment.

Abortion ordinance fails in city election

Albuquerque voters snubbed a citywide ordinance in the city’s runoff election Tuesday that proposed to prohibit late-term abortions. Voters took to the polls to weigh in on the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Ordinance, which would have banned abortion after 20 weeks, excepting situations in which the mother’s life is endangered by the pregnancy.

Women's Basketball: Missed shots lead to loss

Head coach Yvonne Sanchez didn’t have an explanation for why the New Mexico women’s basketball team struggled to shoot the ball. It’s hard to come up with one when a team hits just 31.7 percent (19-60) for the game and 17.9 percent (5-28) in the first half.

Migrant hate needs world’s attention

If ever there was a time to establish a World Parliament, it is now, in order to legislate strict punishment for hate crimes committed by local nationals against innocent migrants crossing borders for productive, law-abiding activity. No longer can distinct countries be trusted to enforce their own laws within their own borders.

Abortion activists have to respect UNM’s mission

Editor, I agree with Mac Morin’s well-written letter objecting to Bible cherry-picking in Tuesday’s Daily Lobo. However, as to his comment on consistency, I’m reminded of Charles Kettering’s famous quote: “Beware of logic; it is an organized way of going wrong with confidence.”

Cherry picking arguments from the Bible is dishonest

Editor, The fallacious act of cherry-picking with regard to Old Testament scripture has become so frequent today that the average layperson becomes lost in a sea of “straw man” argumentation. Christians themselves have been guilty time and time again of cherry-picking various portions of the Bible in order to substantiate a claim.

Theatre Review: Realist play worthy of ovation

I gave “Good People” a standing ovation without hesitation. Everything else is secondary. There are many plays in Albuquerque that are absolutely exceptional for one reason or another: fine acting, clever scripts, creative technics. All these achievements are worthy of praise and notice.
