Artist's Avenue

Senior Eliana Enriquez is majoring in art studio with a concentration in sculpture. This semester, she's taking intermediate sculpture and painting, but she doesn't much like painting because she doesn't "view the world in that type of space," she said. Enriquez stays well-rounded by working with a variety of materials such as wax, metal, clay, wire - random junk collaged together.

Advising forum sees low student turnout

Students and administrators agree that UNM's academic advisement system is flawed, but few students showed up to Tuesday's advisement forum in the SUB. Sophomore Alison Gaik, one of about 35 students at the forum, said she wished more students were willing to express their opinions.

Giving context to the paranormal

If you've seen ghosts, apparitions or UFOs, Ph.D. candidate Bill Dewan wants to know about it. Dewan is surveying UNM students about their experiences with the paranormal in an attempt to understand the cultural context behind such experiences. "Different people conceptualize the supernatural or the abnormal or the paranormal differently - individually, culturally, historically," he said.

Irish festival something to dance about

The tappity-tap-tap-click of dance shoes stomping out an Irish jig echoed throughout the Radisson Hotel on Saturday. It was the 2009 New Mexico State Championships, and about 260 dancers from across the United States competed for prestige and prizes. Beverly Coleman, who teaches traditional Irish step dancing at the Lloyd Shaw Dance Center, said the festival kicks off the celebration of Irish heritage surrounding St.

UNM West provides community with quality faculty, services

Editor, I work at UNM West in Rio Rancho. Apparently, UNM West was presented as an item of discussion and controversy during the faculty meeting last week. The citizens of Rio Rancho passed a tax bill to allocate money for the building of a campus in Rio Rancho.

ASUNM votes down elections policy changes

ASUNM voted not to change its elections policy, shooting down a resolution that would have allowed candidates to spend more on their campaigning and imposed stricter punishments for those who violated the code. Sen. Christopher George proposed a bill on the topic at a Senate meeting Feb.

Offering grad students child care subsidies an investment for NM

Editor, I am writing in response to the article titled "GPSA seeks child care subsidies for graduate students" in Monday's Daily Lobo. I completely agree with GPSA because, currently, graduate students are the only class of people who are singled out and denied access to assistance.

The Lobo Threesome

The Prodigy Invaders Must Die Available Now 4/5 In an alternate reality, this is a greatest hits collection. From start to finish, it's full of songs that sound almost, but not quite, like a collection from The Prodigy's earlier years. "Thunder" sounds an awful lot like "Diesel Power," and "World's on Fire" is a few notes from being a remix of "Firestarter.

Academy for public service sounds like military branch

Editor, In his piece plugging the U.S. Public Service Academy on Feb. 27, Zac Westbrook sounds like a military recruiter trying hard not to sound like one. If the graduates are going to be helping out at Katrina-like disasters, why is it modeled after academies that are military? His calling the latter "illustrious" is what gives him away, like when a posse of trained killers is called an elite corps.

After tumultuous start, a winning mentality

It takes nine players to fill the positions of a softball field. The UNM softball team started the school year with five. A team typically has three or four full-time pitchers; the Lobos had none. A Division-I program carries anywhere from 17 to 20 players on its roster; UNM entered the 2009 season with 13.

UNM overcomes CSU's physical play, strategy

Want to gain confidence back after a two-game road skid? How about a visit from eighth-place Colorado State? On Saturday, the UNM women's basketball team handed the Rams their 11th Mountain West Conference loss, 78-56. "Of course, we needed this one, obviously," head coach Don Flanagan said.

UNM plans comeback after drop in confidence

The No. 50 UNM women's tennis team is in uncharted territory after uncharacteristically dropping two matches at home this weekend. After falling 6-1 to No. 46 Boise State on Friday, UNM dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker against Northern Arizona on Sunday. Now, the usually superb Lobos find themselves in the middle of a five-game losing streak.

Foundation profits despite economy

UNM Foundation officials say the fundraising group has outperformed the national average, in spite of the economic recession, by diversifying the investment of donated funds. The Foundation brought in a 0.7 percent return last fiscal year on an estimated $325 million in endowment funds, Foundation President John Stropp said.

Freedom-hating professors show little regard for the law

Editor, I was disgusted with professors Sharon Warner and Feroza Jussawalla for using the microphone at Wednesday's faculty meeting to further infect the public mind with their freedom-hating views. This tyrannous pair brought up last year's completely unrelated Creative Writing fiasco, once again demonstrating their contempt for the rule of law and individual rights.

Lobos' feverish pitching foils Bears

Fourth-inning follies almost foiled the UNM baseball team's four-game sweep of Northern Colorado. But behind Cole White's feverish 90-mph pitching, the Lobos held on to win 10-8. White entered in the top of the sixth. He pitched 2 2/3 innings, faced nine batters and finished with five strikeouts.
