Con men clash in Broadway musical

Actor Brian McKay, who co-stars in an upcoming Broadway musical comedy about con artists, said he's only been scammed one time while walking up Eighth Avenue in New York. "I saw a guy running the three-card game - he shuffles the card and you've got to spot the ace, and I watched and watched and said, 'That's easy.

The Console Wars

Another year has gone by, and "Duke Nukem Forever" still hasn't been released. All kidding aside, 2008 was a hell of a year for the huddled gaming masses. "Fallout 3" hit the streets in October, and it's probably safe to say that it's the best RPG since "Planescape: Torment" graced the cathode-ray tubes in 1997.

Daily Lobo should report on humanitarian crisis in Gaza

Editor, Although UNM is on winter break, I would like the Daily Lobo to objectively cover the humanitarian crisis that is taking place in Gaza. Israeli air strikes and ground invasions in Gaza have brutally killed more than 600 individuals, and the numbers are rising.

Schmidly urges cooperation within UNM community

President David Schmidly denounced the escalation of what he called the "us-versus-them" politics that have developed between faculty, staff and administrators, during a regents' meeting on Dec. 18. The meeting was held six days after the forum where Schmidly was booed while trying to address faculty, staff and student concerns about the University's finances.

Wills' versatility gives Lobos boost against Air Force

Jonathan Wills sat patiently on the bench Saturday against Air Force at The Pit. And then, Dairese Gary got into foul trouble, and Nate Garth checked into the scorer's table but picked up two fouls after only 1:01. Seconds later, Steve Alford motioned for and handed the point-guard reins to Wills.

Lobos overcome feeble start to devastate Falcons

Even the Michelin Man couldn't have prevented this blowout. On Saturday, the final score from Colorado, Springs, was 73-39 in favor of the UNM women's basketball team over Air Force. The UNM women's basketball team bullied resident Mountain West Conference foe Air Force, and everybody on the Lobos took their hacks.

Roman Martinez shoots over Air Force's Andrew Henke in the Lobos' 78-53 stomp at The Pit on Saturday. Air Force entered the contest as the third-ranked team in 3-point efficiency, but the Lobos outshot them 56.3 percent to 33.3 percent from deep.

UNM flies past Air Force to clinch win

Decked out in its royal blue uniforms, Air Force came into Saturday's contest against the UNM men's basketball team as the Mountain West Conference's "Blue Bombers." The Falcons entered The Pit as the third-ranked 3-point-shooting team in the nation, stroking 42.

Richardson investigation may impact University

The federal investigation keeping Gov. Bill Richardson from Washington could affect administrative work at UNM as well. On Jan. 5, Richardson withdrew his name from the commerce secretary post in President-elect Barack Obama's administration. He cited the federal grand jury investigation of $1.

Danridge finally shines in comeback victory

It was a coming-out party for UNM senior and starting forward Tony Dandridge Wednesday at The Pit. After being questioned about his leadership ability over the course of the first 10 games for the Lobos, Danridge shined and showed the kind of leader he can be for the young UNM men's basketball team.

Solstice swap combines art, healing

Artist and Maine-native Kelin Underwood said she's never eaten peyote but has traveled a lot. "I had this serious anxiety issue and was not, like, bound to one place but kind of feeling stuck, like I could never branch out," she said. So she took her dog and a bunch of art she made in high school and took off across the States.

Lobos come from behind to top Oral Roberts, 66-63

Oral Roberts' Robert Jarvis was dialing in from long distance all night, but when the Golden Eagles needed him the most, the line went dead - and the UNM men's basketball team got away 66-63 after being down as much as 15, marking the Lobos' second-largest comeback in The Pit.

For Faris, it wasn't the prettiest shot, but it was a gorgeous result

LAS CRUCES - What a game, what a shot and what a comeback. After leading most of the game, the Lobos found themselves down with less than one minute to go against in-state rival NMSU in Las Cruces on Tuesday night. But senior Daniel Faris ended his career against the Aggies the way any Lobo would want to: hitting a shot to win the game.

Lobos head down to Las Cruces in hopes of sweeping NMSU

Chad Toppert knows all too well. "It's completely different playing the Aggies in Las Cruces than playing the Aggies in The Pit," he said. Case in point: The last time UNM won down south was in 2004, when the Lobos coasted to a 84-66 victory. Since then, the Lobos are 0-3 in Las Cruces, including last year's 71-62 loss.

Administrators' salaries a central issue at forum

At the forum Friday, students and employees voiced concerns about the wide salary gap between administrators and faculty. Some asked President David Schmidly if he would take a pay cut and have his vice presidents do the same. Schmidly earns a base salary of $387,600, and UNM's 14 vice presidents make an average of more than $250,000.

Filling athletics vacancies over faculty not fair to students

Editor, Here's a simple question: What is wrong with a University that can't fill a faculty spot years after it becomes vacant but can fill the head football coach position within days? I have come to accept that a school's sports programs, especially football and basketball, take priority over its academic programs because sports programs can bring in a lot of money.

UNM needs to justify allocating large salaries to vice presidents

Editor, I have attended UNM for the past couple of years, and I have noticed that there are several recurring themes. Most often, I feel I am educated enough to have a legitimate idea of where I stand on most issues. However, one area in which I have always felt deep concern, but on which, to be perfectly honest, I have virtually no knowledge of, is that of our budgetary concerns regarding the employment of what is often alleged to be an excess of administration.
