Voting out of fear a mistake that shouldn't happen again

Editor, In the fall of 1964, at the age of 24, I voted in my first U.S. presidential election. I voted for Lyndon B. Johnson. It was a mistake. Johnson was an OK president, but he wasn't the president for the times. This was proven by his inability to stand up for the many decisions he made regarding the Southeast Asia war and his inability to stand up as the protector of the U.

Udall, Pearce focus on jobs, economic crisis

Reps. Steve Pearce and Tom Udall are spending time at UNM to inform students of their positions on the problems America faces this election year. Pearce, a Republican, said students should know he has their best interests at heart. "Between my background, my knowledge and my passion for working for New Mexico, I am the candidate who will see that New Mexico and the United States fix our economy and that we move into this new generation with jobs for the future and hope for the future," he said.

Obama's rallies and rhetoric cloud students' judgment

Editor, The election process in the United States has become nothing more than a popularity contest. Barack Obama's Hollywood personality and rallying speeches seem to be clouding the judgment of many college students at this campus. Even hinting that Obama is qualified and experienced enough is not only wrong; it's ignorant.

Question of the Week

Are you concerned about local elections? If so, which ones? Tyler Robertson Junior Psychology "Not really.... I've watched all the commercials. I haven't seen a whole lot of what they're going to do. It's more of just bashing each other. I just kind of go with my party and their views.

Don't let mistakes in election process take away your vote

Editor, You must vote, because my vote will probably not count. Despite having applied for an absentee ballot months in advance, my county clerk made an error, which could very well keep me from returning my ballot on time for tally. My vote will probably not count, so I implore you to not only vote but to make sure your vote counts.

Race, ethnicity will not stop Obama from warmongering

Editor, When John Edwards, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were asked at the end of the Democratic presidential debate at Myrtle Beach in South Carolina on Jan. 21 (this year's Martin Luther King Jr. holiday) whom King would endorse, Obama had the honesty to admit "I don't think Dr.

Players confident about championship run

The Mountain West Conference Championships for women's cross country is shaping up to be a two-pony race. Of the nine teams running in Saturday's championship in San Diego, only UNM and BYU are nationally ranked. The UNM women's team climbed four places to 23rd in the nation after last week's 10th-place finish in the NCAA Pre-Nationals at Indiana State.

Seniors hope to upset No. 8 Utah

You know what they say: You dug your own hole - now lie in it. And that might just be the best thing for the UNM football team to do. For some reason, the Lobos have a propensity to fall behind early against Utah. But even more fascinating is UNM's ability to resurrect themselves and upset the Utes.

Student activism integral to checking cronyism, corruption

Editor, Events in recent weeks underscore how crucial student involvement and activism are in maintaining the integrity of our public University. First, $150,000 went missing from the coffers of student organizations. The money was returned only when administrators got caught with their pants down, and the Daily Lobo admirably reported on the situation.

Schmidly a complete failure in improving UNM's standing

Editor, In the past couple months, we've seen articles in the Daily Lobo outlining reduced faculty numbers in chemistry and mathematics, the administration's reallocation of $50,000 from the Daily Lobo and, several months ago, the outlining of how much administrator salaries have increased in just the past few years, followed by how the budget was mishandled earlier this year, causing money allocated for certain academic department operating funds to be put elsewhere.
