International arena

Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain are sharply divided on foreign policy questions, such as how to exit Iraq and how to deal with Iran. Obama voted for a bill that would put a timeline on the Iraq War. "What I've said is we should end this war responsibly," Obama said during the first presidential debate.

Congressional candidates clash over economy, energy

Congressional candidates Martin Heinrich and Darren White can't seem to agree on issues such as the economy and energy independence, but both have said they will seek a solution to health care and create affordable programs for everyone. Heinrich, the Democratic candidate for the First Congressional District, said he will work for better health care programs by continuing to stand up to large insurance companies.

Throwing around 'Muslim' reflects poorly on politicians

Editor, This is a great country. I have served it in uniform in Iraq and hope to serve it in public office someday. I am deeply concerned, however, with the level of discourse that we have seen during this campaign. To be frank, I am concerned with the number of times I have heard the word Muslim.

UNM's building rental contract should be available to public

Editor, I am not sure I completely understand moving Student Services off campus. I can understand that a corporation with an empty building or partially empty building would want to rent it to UNM. Since the campus does not yet know how well the relocation will work, I hope the University has not entered into a contract it cannot get out of, the kind of contract with terms stating the other party has a right to expecting many years of rent, and if the contract is broken, the University has to agree to go a Delaware courtroom and still pay the remaining years of rent.

Student Services move puts administration before students

Editor, I am reminded of the quote from the great coach Vince Lombardi in reference to the latest happenings on UNM: "What the hell is going on out there?" The scheme to move Student Services to South Campus is another example of placing the needs of students behind the needs of the administration.

Senior never takes eye off winning games

For five UNM women's soccer players, Friday's game against UNLV could be their last. But senior forward Hannah Hand has played with that approach her whole career. "I haven't changed anything since I was a freshman," Hand said about her game-time mentality.

Addressing the crisis

In the past six months, the economy has undergone a mortgage crisis, a credit crisis and a number of stock market dives. The dollar's drop in value has had a ripple effect through the markets in other countries and dragged them into a global recession. Sens.

University might get less funding from Legislature

UNM's funding from the Legislature could take a hit in 2009. The Roundhouse gives UNM about $360 million each legislative session, said Marc Saavedra, UNM's director of government affairs. Saavedra said UNM has received 10 to 20 percent of the money in the Legislature's special projects bill in recent years but that this year, Santa Fe has less money to give away, which could mean less funding for UNM.

McCain's moderate stances make him better choice

Editor, For the first time since the big bang, all my immediate family are defecting from the Democratic Party to vote for John McCain and Republicans for Congress and Senate. Why? The Republicans had a wide variety of candidates to choose from, which included the far right to McCain, who was labeled as "too liberal" by the Republicans.

Electoral College brings attention to New Mexico

If it weren't for the Electoral College and New Mexico's swing-state status, Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain might not have bothered to come to UNM this election season. "Despite being a pretty small state population-wise, we're obviously gathering a ton of national attention," said Gabriel Sanchez, assistant political science professor at UNM.
