Runners starting to gain attention

With UNM football receiving most of the attention during the fall semester, it's easy to overlook smaller sports such as cross country. But the UNM men's cross country team has a pre-season ranking at No. 15 in the U.S. The ranking is the highest UNM has had since 1989, and it's the first appearance in the national poll since 2004.

Senior faculty members stood up during President David Schmidly's meeting Tuesday to say they are distressed by the dwindling number of tenured professors at UNM. The meeting addressed issues that have festered since April, when faculty members circulated a petition questioning the use of University funds and the growth of UNM's upper administration.

Nader should run for Congress before vying for presidency

Editor, I appreciated Lisa Ruby's response to Lila Sanchez's letter regarding Ralph Nader. I would like to acknowledge that Nader has done excellent work in his lifetime that makes America safer. There was a time when American automobile manufacturers would not put any device in their cars that they did not hold a patent for.

Column: God must be watching the Cowboys

Dear Philadelphia Eagles fans and players: I was going to be classy. I wasn't going to say one word about it, reference it, mention the score - 41-37 - analyze it, let alone write a column about it. But then I remembered. I remembered the time "The Playmaker," Michael Irvin, lay motionless after his head was driven into the turf at Veterans Stadium by defensive back Tim Hauck.

Question & Answer

The Daily Lobo sat down with anthropologist David Dinwoodie to find out why some people help others and expect nothing in return. Daily Lobo: Why do people engage in philanthropy and charity? David Dinwoodie: People like Andrew Carnegie, who gave money he made in business for institutions like libraries - his idea was that the purpose of money was to establish an active citizenry.

Creationism wouldn't hold against scientific scrutiny

Editor, I am writing in response to the recent letters heaping praise on the pseudoscientific concept of creationism. Statements such as, "I believe creationism is just as much a theory as evolution, and it should be valued as such" are evidence that science education is in desperate need of attention.

Star Wars fans need to stop clinging to their childhoods

Editor, After reading your review for "The Clone Wars," I was a little disappointed. I was disappointed in the maturity of the author of the review. I am not here to tell you George Lucas' latest creation is the movie of the year. Commenting on this movie is beneath me, as should it be beneath the author.

Debates give candidates chance to expound, defend positions

Editor, Guest columnist B. Lee Drake expounded on the importance of the student vote in Friday's column. We at College Republicans heartily agree, and, moreover, believe this vote should be informed and thoughtful. To that end, we wrote to Drake on Aug. 22 in his capacity as co-chairman of College Democrats, proposing two debates to be held at UNM between Lisa Torraco and her opponent for Bernalillo County district attorney, and between Rep.

Column: Ninja Turtles, NFC East a lot alike

After two weeks of the 2008 NFL season, there are 10 teams with an undefeated record of 2-0. Oh, and what a coincidence that both conferences share five undefeated teams a piece. I have joined the bandwagon and sadly must admit that the Dallas Cowboys can win the 2009 Super Bowl.
