English chairman steps down amid department strife

English department chairman David Jones resigned Wednesday after battling turmoil within the department for nearly a year. The department is looking for one of its full-time faculty members to replace Jones by the end of this week. Jones, who presided over the English department for the past three years, was chairman during the controversy surrounding creative writing associate professor Lisa Chavez, who posed in sexually suggestive photos with a student.

Lobos' Hand brings victory over Knights within grasp

UNM forward Hannah Hand continues to make her way up the all-time assist list. Hand, who came into Sunday's game with 14 assists, dished out 15 and 16 as UNM glided past the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson 5-0 at the UNM Soccer Complex. She now trails alumna Laurie Hegedorn by only seven assists, with Hegedorn at 23.

Lobo helps team muscle way to victory over Arizona

After joining the UNM football team, Clint McPeek was told to eat a little bit more McDonald's. McPeek, who is UNM's 6-feet-1-inch, 227 pound Lobo back, has had to beef up, adding 50 pounds to his frame since coming to New Mexico. But all that weight is muscle.

One doctor's fertile idea

Dr. Paul Magarelli is on a mission to reduce the cost of in vitro fertilization in New Mexico. Magarelli, one of about 600 board-certified doctors of reproductive endocrinology and infertility, founded his clinic at UNM Hospital five years ago. Since then, more than 100 babies have been born in New Mexico to parents who used IVF.

Staff, faculty eligible for free bus rides

Faculty and staff can now get free passes to ride city buses, an announcement that comes nearly a month after President David Schmidly said the passes would be available. Schmidly announced Aug. 11 that the University had worked with the city to provide free bus passes to faculty and staff.

Election banks on student votes

Want to vote this year? Revved up for Barack Obama or John McCain? Either way, guard your rights. There are people who don't want you to show up at the polls. As reported in Inside Higher Ed, students at Virginia Tech were told in the closing days of August that if they voted, they could lose their scholarships, have their driver's licenses voided, lose their health insurance and lose their tax status.

Editor, Politicians like Steve Pearce have learned they can feed students empty promises and lies and get away with it. Why? Because while young people may work to get their voices heard, they don't back up their activism with votes. We will inherit a mismanaged economy, a shrinking job market, a polluted planet and mountains of debt, both for ourselves and for the country.

UNM, CNM and APS forge partnership

UNM and CNM joined APS this semester in an educational partnership to encourage children to prepare for college as early as kindergarten. President David Schmidly, CNM President Katharine Winograd and APS Superintendent Winston Brooks gathered at Sombra del Monte Elementary in August to sign the agreement.

Removal of recycling bins reflects poorly on UNM

Editor, I just learned that all the recycling bins in Mesa Vista Hall have been permanently removed because of fire code. While I recognize that fire safety is important, I also think it reflects poorly on the University to remove recycling options from its buildings.


UNM comes into Saturday's match against Arizona winless. The Lobos will need to put some points on the board - the Wildcats are third in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 55.5 points per game.

Arizona's high-octane train comes barreling into University Stadium on Saturday to square off against the UNM football team. UNM fans won't have much to boast about after losing two consecutive games to TCU and Texas A&M, but fresh in their minds is last year's 29-27 come-from-behind victory over Arizona down in Tucson.

Making the transition from Brazil to Burque

It was a stroke of luck that brought freshman outside-hitter Kelly Williamson to UNM. This summer, the UNM women's volleyball team was scheduled to visit China on a 12-day trip to Beijing and Shanghai. However, the sports traveling agency organizing the tour, TranSports Athletic Team Tours, declared bankruptcy 10 days before the team was set to depart.

West Bank talk sparks complaints of bias

Author Anna Baltzer spoke Wednesday about the conflicts Palestinians face with the Israeli government on the West Bank. But some students who attended the event thought the presentation was one-sided. "I want to debunk the myth that this is Jews versus Muslims.


The UNM women's soccer team eked out a 3-3 tie. They are now 2-1-2 on the season.

-Lobos bounce back for last-minute tie

The UNM women's soccer squad showed it's a team that just won't quit, coming back from two goals down against Hawaii on Tuesday to force its second draw of the season. The Lobos scored two goals late in the second half to tie the game at 3-3. Neither team could capitalize in two overtimes.

Reading gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson's works, one might think his whole life was a blur of reckless behavior and drug abuse. But for all of the mescaline-induced tales of ambiguous lizard-like forms slithering about in seedy Las Vegas showrooms, his insight into the cultural and political landscape of his time gave him the torch to write about the American Dream.


The GPSA put together a comittee to help international graduate students adjust to university life.

Committee aims to assist grad students

GPSA created an ad hoc committee this semester to help international graduate and professional students acclimate to UNM. Graduate and Professional Student Association President Christopher Ramirez said the committee is a student-run initiative designed to give international grad students the direction they need and to answer questions about university life.
