Dining hall debuts program to reduce leftover-food waste

La Posada donated more than $200 worth of food to the Road Runner Food Bank during the kickoff of its conservation program, Trayless Mondays. On Trayless Mondays, students are asked to not use trays when they eat at La Posada. "What we're hoping to accomplish is to reduce the amount of wasted food," said Donna Provost, director of the dining hall.

$7 million fund lets students get hands-on market practice

Daily Lobo Staff Report Business students are using millions of dollars to play the fluctuating stock market as part of a class assignment. Amy Wohlert, interim dean of the Anderson School of Management, said the class, Management 478, uses the $7 million Student Investment Fund as a learning tool.

Arson suspected in second Telos fire

UNM Police are investigating another case of suspected arson on campus, as a fire damaged the basement of the Telos House on Sunday morning, Lt. Pat Davis said. The first fire at the Telos House, on Las Lomas Road and Yale Boulevard, occurred in August, also in the basement.

English professor resigns over administration's actions

Creative writing professor Joy Harjo has resigned amid rumors that strife between the department's faculty and senior administrators cannot be resolved. Harjo, the University's only Joseph Russo Endowed Professor, said her resignation was a result of the administration's decision to retain associate professor Lisa Chavez.

Greek Life councils elect new presidents

The governing bodies of UNM's fraternities and sororities are under new management. The College Panhellenic Council and the Interfraternity Council held presidential elections Sunday and Monday. Michael Westervelt, of Phi Gamma Delta, was elected IFC president, and Tess Goering was elected Panhellenic Council president.

ASUNM candidates prepare for upcoming elections

Election season continues locally as the Associated Students of UNM has 10 open Senate seats up for a vote Nov. 19. But the student government elections aren't drawing nearly as much attention as those of Nov. 4. ASUNM introduced more than 20 candidates Monday to an empty SUB Atrium.

Lectures, poetry mark heritage celebration

Students and faculty are inviting everyone on campus to celebrate American Indian history and tradition this month. The Bookstore is working with organizations such as the Kiva Club and the Native American Studies Indigenous Research Group to host a series of events in honor of National American Indian Heritage Month.

CAPS hosts workshops to get students' minds, study habits in gear

Finals are right around the corner, and the Center for Academic Program Support wants to help students shorten their study time and boost their retention of information. CAPS is offering study-strategy workshops - focused on test-taking and note-taking strategies, reading effectively and memorization - this month and the next, said Karen Olson, director of CAPS.

Event informs black high schoolers about life at UNM

UNM seeks to recruit minority students through events such as African American Student Day, which was held in the SUB on Friday. Admissions & Recruitment Services and African American Student Services hosted more than 150 students from Manzano, Cibola, Del Norte, Clovis, Rio Rancho and Albuquerque high schools.

Scalpels down

Undergraduate students will not be allowed to use cadavers once the medical building opens in fall 2009. James Swan, director of Anatomy and Physiology, said the cadavers will no longer be available because the administration decided to give the space for the cadaver lab to other health departments.

Pit, stadium upgrades to begin in December

The first phase of $80 million worth of renovations to athletics venues at UNM is scheduled to begin Dec. 20 at University Stadium. The Pit will receive $60 million in updates, and University Stadium will get $20 million. Paul Krebs, vice president of athletics, said he does not intend to scale back the renovations to save money.

President David Schmidly is encouraging students to donate to United Way of Central New Mexico, despite the economic downturn. "Now, more than ever, it is time for us to pull together as a community and to help our brothers and sisters in need," Schmidly wrote in his Monday morning message Oct.

Lighting down

UNM plans to limit smoking on campus, or ban it altogether, by the end of the summer. President David Schmidly has appointed a committee, the UNM Smoke-Free Environment Committee, to look into whether UNM should ban smoking on campus or relegate it to designated areas.

Schmidly: No more spending or hiring

President David Schmidly announced Tuesday he will enact a spending and hiring freeze at UNM. He presented a plan for a "strategic spending pause" to the UNM Regents' Finance and Facilities Committee and said it is designed to boost UNM's savings during tough economic times.

Students can skip meal to feed hungry

Students and faculty can skip a meal this week and participate in the first program directed by Meal Exchange in the U.S. Meal Exchange is a nonprofit and has operated in Canada since 1993. It has since spread to 50 universities in Canada and now to UNM.

Talk touts world peace possibilities

Pageant contestants aren't the only ones asking for world peace these days. The UNM chapter of the Soka Gakkai International Buddhist Club is hosting a discussion today with Amnesty International and humanist societies to share perspectives on world peace.

Retiring professors put Anthropology in lurch

The UNM Department of Anthropology is expected to be in the top 20 anthropology programs in the nation, according to its chairman. "Anthropology is one of the strongest programs at UNM," chairman Michael Graves said in an e-mail to the Daily Lobo. "I am hopeful it will continue as such.
