Board of Regents responsible for keeping University afloat
February 10Editor, A few weeks ago, Board of Regents President Jamie Koch said he does not have to respond to faculty concerns. I found this so strange because he is the president of the Board of Regents, the highest administrative body at UNM. Don't they have to look after the interest of the University and therefore everyone that is part of it? Doesn't the president of the Board of Regents have the greatest responsibility? I have been thinking about all these attacks on President David Schmidly, and as much as I agree with the lack of confidence in his administration, I also know that the key players in our beloved University are the regents.
Programs continue to erode, endangering UNM's credibility
February 9Editor, It is very puzzling to teach at a university where the president of the Board of Regents and the University president treat the faculty with open disrespect and as adversaries because they have questioned the diversion of institutional funds. While these administrators say they welcome dialogue, it is clear that both are dismissive of faculty voices and are concerned only that our voices might be heard by the Legislature.
University's top administrators have perpetuated fraud, abuse
February 9Editor, I've been following pretty closely the details regarding the faculty's impending meeting with UNM's version of "The Three Blind Mice": President David Schmidly, Executive Vice President David Harris and Regents President Jamie Koch. The initial refusal of Harris and Koch to show up at the upcoming meeting addressing a possible vote of no confidence shows complete arrogance and lack of understanding from two people who know less about higher education than a wet-behind-the-ears high school teacher getting his or her first class.
Schmidly's Monday message rife with delusions, ignorance
February 9Editor, Schmidly still doesn't get it. In last week's Monday message, he threw out a few delusional statements so preciously asinine that I'm almost inspired to pity the man - almost. First, as Schmidly has done before, he reminds us of how honest he's been to the agenda he set with the regents when he was hired.
Koch's reappointment should be scrutinized by Legislature
February 6Editor, UNM Regent Jamie Koch has done a disservice to the UNM community. The worst of Koch's actions was to push for the hiring of President David Schimdly, who, by most accounts, has been a disaster from the very beginning. The community of Oklahoma State warned us what was coming (Daily Lobo letter, Feb.
Faculty must be ones to raise red flag
Richard M. Berthold Columnist | February 6President David Schmidly and company have accomplished something not seen since the regents attempted to hire the utterly unsuitable John Elac as president a quarter century ago: He has stirred the normally quiescent faculty to serious protest. He characterizes the outraged faculty circulating a petition for a full faculty meeting as a "small (and by inference, radical) minority," when given the long history of faculty apathy, yet more than 200 signatures are in fact an overwhelming sign of disgust with this administration.
University should trim fat before cutting vital programs
February 5Editor, I would not cut funding for Accessibility Services. It is an absolute necessity for disabled students to get their education. I would keep services for students from other cultures or who have limited English because they also need these services to finish their education.
Palestinians continue to play role in fueling Mideast conflict
February 5Editor, The war in Gaza has generated much criticism toward Israel. The usual accusations of Israel committing war crimes and the hollow comparisons to the Holocaust were not late to come. However, I am suspicious of the authenticity and decency of those who demonstrate such a deep concern to the other and possess such a developed conscience.
It's ignorant to suggest UNM eliminate its support centers
February 5Editor, Lawrence Allen, you must feel like public enemy No. 1, and this is for a very good reason. Do you think all subalterns, minorities and the (learning) disabled are placed on God's green Earth to be unskilled laborers to serve you? Did you forget the Emancipation Proclamation? What a shame UNM admitted such a small-minded, bigoted and uneducated redneck such as yourself.
Obama has already failed to deliver the change he promised
February 4Editor, According to an article in The Guardian, Barack Obama's inauguration is estimated to have cost $150 million. It's certainly the most expensive inauguration in American history. I understand that this was a historic event because Obama is the first black man to occupy the White House, but was it truly necessary to spend this much money during this severe economic crisis? Also, it seems to me that the new $819 billion bailout package is an incredible amount of wasteful government spending, since the previous $700 billion bailout package that we heard about a few months ago was supposed to rescue our economy from going into a recession.
Ask Dr. Peg
Peggy Spencer Columnist | February 4Dear Dr. Peg, I have serious acne, but not on my face - on my back. This has a nasty side effect of making little bloodstains on the back of my nightshirt, because I unconsciously squeeze while asleep. How can I reduce the number of zits on my back? Dear Sufferer, Zits suck, as if I need to tell you.
UNM should cut shuttle service to reduce costs, carbon footprint
February 4Editor, The Physical Plant Department should be applauded for cutting costs and decreasing pollution. However, it is puzzling that UNM has only recently followed a policy of reducing temperatures in unoccupied buildings. Imagine if this had been the policy for the last decade.
Only those who lack faith need proof that the Bible is true
February 3Editor, After reading "Archaeological evidence proves the Bible is a reliable source" in the Daily Lobo on Jan. 23, I just kept wondering why the faithful need proof. If you are looking for proof in the Bible, you are missing the point. Many scholars agree that there was a man named Jesus running around Jerusalem 2,000 years ago.
Ethnic centers help students; Lottery needs improvements
February 3Editor, Lawrence Allen makes one decent point and two completely ignorant and venomous ones in his letter to the Daily Lobo on Friday. I will leave critique of the first one to those more informed on the topic (a move Allen would have been wise to emulate), but on the second one, I understand the angst white people feel about ethnic and other support programs.
Anthropology museum, class help dispel idea of creationism
February 3Editor, It is now the 21st century, which is why I find it amazing to see some of my fellow students at UNM still buying into ideas that were dispelled in the 18th century. The first scientists to show that creationism was wrong were not biologists, whom most people would think, but geologists.
