A McCain administration would put end to reproductive rights

Editor, Margaret Sanger's son, Grant, was in my father's Columbia University Medical School classes. His name would be broadcast into the hallways, that he was "needed again to go to jail and bail out your mother." The young medical students cheered for her good cause.

Nader's resume shows he is most qualified candidate

Editor, In her letter to the editor, Lisa Ruby discourteously painted a picture of a person who does not do anything in the community in other ways to supplement a vote. Her letter offered a slew of extraneous suggestions of which I currently take into consideration in my daily activities.

Recycling services available for all University offices

Editor, Katie Newell was mistaken when she stated in her Sept. 12 letter to the editor that recycling bins had been permanently removed from Mesa Vista. The recycling bins were removed from the halls of Mesa Vista, but there are still many locations to recycle paper, glass and aluminum cans inside offices and departments at Mesa Vista.

Column: Obama not right for America

Let me first say I respect Barack Obama for his accomplishments. He has lived the American Dream. But he is the wrong candidate to lead America. As a conservative, there are three basic things I believe in: fiscal responsibility, a strong national defense and the possession of moral values.

Creating a good reputation all the branding UNM needs

Editor, Like many, I received an e-mail from UNM asking me to complete a survey to help with the University's effort at "branding." This effort is a waste of money and is fiscally irresponsible for a publicly funded university. There are far higher priorities for UNM to consider before it pays for a lengthy marketing campaign.

Under a microscope, evolution not all it's cracked up to be

Editor, The theory of evolution should be subject to criticism and Socratic questioning like any other idea. Unfortunately, it often is not. Evolution holds an unprecedented status when it comes to being challenged. The answer is: You must be a great fool not to believe this.

Since creationism isn't science, leave it out of the classroom

Editor, In response to "Evolution, creationism should be taught hand-in-hand," I say, yes, evolution is a theory. It is a theory because it has withstood the principles of the scientific method since its inception by Charles Darwin and others in the mid-19th century.

Scientists keep Biblical artifacts underneath the surface

Editor, Many have heard the story of Noah's Ark and the Great Flood. Some may think it is a fairy tale, while others believe it is a true event. One thing we know for sure is the book of Genesis gives us the size, shape, characteristics and landing place of the ark.

Creationism is a matter of faith, while evolution is a theory

Editor, I know I am not writing anything new, but neither was James Burkhard in Tuesday's letter "Evolution, creationism should be taught hand-in-hand." Burkhard makes the same mistake many people make when they try to explain why creationism is just as relevant as the theory of evolution.

It takes a lot of faith to believe humans are product of evolution

Editor, I just wanted to respond briefly to David Gonzalez's letter about creationism. I agree with him when he said science and religion exist on entirely different planes: Science is constrained to time; religion is constrained to the spiritual world where there is only a concept of eternity.

View from the bottom

President David Schmidly, who seems only to write for the Albuquerque Journal in response to something negative, claims the huge and expensive expansion of the administration has resulted in big gains, mentioning an increase in National Merit and National Hispanic scholars.

Voters shouldn't have to decide who's the best of the worst

Editor, If it's a pig with lipstick, it's still a pig. These are lessons I learned from my father, mother and grandparents. If your parents told you "Don't buck the system," whom where they fooling? The problem that existed for their generation isn't the same problem we currently have.

Nader should run for Congress before vying for presidency

Editor, I appreciated Lisa Ruby's response to Lila Sanchez's letter regarding Ralph Nader. I would like to acknowledge that Nader has done excellent work in his lifetime that makes America safer. There was a time when American automobile manufacturers would not put any device in their cars that they did not hold a patent for.

The Setonian

Creationism wouldn't hold against scientific scrutiny

Editor, I am writing in response to the recent letters heaping praise on the pseudoscientific concept of creationism. Statements such as, "I believe creationism is just as much a theory as evolution, and it should be valued as such" are evidence that science education is in desperate need of attention.
