UNM should invest in lights if student safety is a priority

Editor, When I leave my evening classes, it is completely dark outside, and there are almost no bright lights around the main walkways. I don't feel safe at night when I am on campus. Recently, money was spent to install huge lights on Johnson Field, and they are wonderful.

Rise in sea level would not create higher, drier coasts

Editor, OK, so the ignorance of equating Darwin's writing to the Bible and Quran while also denigrating Islam made Dennis Kinzler's ideas out to be the ranting of a fool. But in Monday's Daily Lobo, he outdid himself. I'm not sure what NASA reports he looked at, but a casual Google search confirmed that NASA - I was looking at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which may be the source of confusion - has, among other articles, one titled "Arctic Ice Meltdown Continues With Significantly Reduced Winter Ice Cover.

Bin location change hasn't made it harder to recycle

Editor, I'd like to respond to James Connolly's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Thursday about recycling bins and sustainability. It's obvious that Connolly was upset by the changes in the location of recycling bins in Northrop Hall. Yes, the state fire marshal required recycling bins to be removed from the halls, but the recycling department worked diligently with the building coordinator to locate substitute sites to place the bins.

Basic research shows that global warming is natural

Editor, After researching global warming, it seems that natural events cause most of it, despite all the fear thrust upon us by professors and the global warming crowd. I have found some interesting studies and articles to prove this point that emanate from scientists.

The University should show respect for pagan holidays

Editor, This letter is addressed to UNM President David Schmidly. My name is Joseph Bell, and I'm a psychology student at UNM. As I understand it, "establishment of goals and policies to guide the University and oversight of the functioning of the University" is a role carried out by your offices.

Indian students in danger if accused assaulter released

Editor, I applaud the Daily Lobo for following up on the Indian students assault case. This shows the commitment of the newspaper in ensuring that students on campus are safe and secure. Turan Johnson has accumulated more than 20 court cases against him in the past three years.

Smoking ban debate can be resolved with compromise

Editor, I know many people must be sick and tired of hearing about the possible smoking ban on campus, but I have a few thoughts to share. First of all, I am not a smoker, but I think it would be ridiculous to try to ban smoking on campus. I used to work in a restaurant where many people smoked, and they would go crazy if they didn't get their smoke break.

Don't look to Bible for history

by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo columnist I have remained out of the ongoing debate on evolution versus intelligent design, because it is simply silly. As Thomas Aquinas discovered, reason and faith are separate orders of truth, and ultimately, neither can budge the other.

Environmentalists shouldn't hassle debt-ridden students

Editor, I'm sick and tired of constantly being asked if I have a moment to spare for the environment by people with clipboards who stand around campus all day long. No, I don't have any money for you, so buzz off. Every day, they bombard me, desperately trying to get me to donate money.

Recent attacks made only to ruin GPSA's standing

Editor, The cynical attacks against GPSA's Student Research Allocation Committee are trumped-up charges that a small agitated group is fabricating as an excuse to ruin the standing of GPSA. Wednesday's article in the Daily Lobo attributes to Jason Thomas the statement that students should have received the SRAC grant award notifications in mid-September.

Petition to recall president hinders progressive ideas

Editor, I would like to state my opinion in response to the article on the GPSA president recall petition published in the Daily Lobo on Wednesday. If those who are organizing the recall want to talk about democracy, I would like to know why they are not trying to first talk about the problems they see rather than go to the extreme of launching a petition for a recall of GPSA President Joseph Garcia.

Taking away recycling bins goes against sustainability

Editor, UNM is amazing. The letter from Mary Vosevich published in the Daily Lobo on Monday about all that UNM is doing to achieve sustainability and the disappearance of recycling bins from UNM hallways are classic examples of wonderful-sounding talk short-circuited by occurrences that point in exactly the opposite direction.

Palestinian viewpoint not overlooked in world media

Editor, You published two letters from the Middle East Peace and Justice Alliance in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. Lori Rudolph decries that the Palestinians are "overlooked and falsely represented as terrorists by our media." Katherine Hughes-Fraitekh provides the usual weary indictments of Israel, including a new one - the inability of Christian Palestinians to access their holy places in Jerusalem.

GPSA president chooses to lead rather than roll over

Editor, Joseph Garcia came to the office of the presidency to expand the scope of GPSA and increase the stature of this body. In the past, which is obvious from some posts to our Listserv, most graduate and professional students believed the only purpose of GPSA was to disperse money either to individuals in the form of travel and research grants or money to run graduate student organizations.

Flying Spaghetti Monster deserves class time too

Editor, I believe that creationism, evolution and the factual evidence of the Flying Spaghetti Monster should be taught in schools nationwide. My belief is that the Flying Spaghetti Monster is often an overlooked faith in American culture. We have fought hard to secure our place in this great land.

Israelis spoke from heart, not from an approved script

Editor, I am a graduate student studying the history of West Asia and South Asia. I am also a volunteer with the Middle East Peace & Justice Alliance. I recently attended an event the alliance co-sponsored called Jerusalem Women Speak. Three women who live in Israel spoke about their personal experiences living, working and playing in this much-contested region.

Story about staph infection helped expose its dangers

Editor, I would like to thank the Daily Lobo for running the article on staph infection on Monday. I am a survivor of a bacterial staph infection. I became seriously ill after the Christmas of 2004 and only became sicker throughout January 2005. On Jan.

Women's tour sheds light on Israel-Palestine issues

Editor, I'm a member of the Middle East Peace and Justice Alliance that co-sponsored the Jerusalem Women Speak tour. It featured Muslim, Christian and Jewish women from Israel and Palestine talking about peace and experiences living in the Holy Land. I attended five of the events - a luncheon at a local church, an evening event, two classroom talks at UNM and an editorial meeting at the Albuquerque Journal.

Speakers provide voice for marginalized Palestinians

Editor, I am a Jewish member of the Middle East Peace and Justice Alliance. I recently returned from the West Bank after an eight-month stay where I lived and worked at a refugee camp and taught as a visiting professor at Al-Quds University. Representation in Dotan Kennedy's letter that appeared in the Daily Lobo on Friday appears to be an issue here.

Peace among religions crucial to planet's survival

Editor, I recently attended a presentation as part of the Jerusalem Women Speak tour in Albuquerque. Three women, each representing one of the three Abrahamic religions, demonstrated they can and do believe in peace with a single vision for co-existence among the peoples of Israel and Palestine.
