Sporting events in need of reserved student parking

Editor, It was such a hassle to park at Thursday's Lobo football game against Air Force. When I finally found an open parking spot, a selfish man told me it was taken for his wife. I was infuriated by his selfishness because he had one parking space for his truck and another one reserved for his wife.

Scientific method absent from intelligent design

Editor, I am writing in response to Alex Goldsand's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Friday. As a student of the biological sciences, I have spent a considerable amount of time devoted to understanding the arguments of intelligent design. The problem with such arguments is that they do not employ the scientific method.

Corporate gifts weaken the integrity of physicians

Editor, Oftentimes within the political landscape, we demonize our leaders for falling prey to the temptation of lobbyists. There is nothing more loathsome than the selling of one's principles in order to accrue campaign dollars. In order to find such abhorrent behavior, one need not go so far as Capitol Hill.

Smoking ban isn't based on scientific proof of threat

Editor, Smokers may be a minority, but ardent anti-smokers are an even smaller minority. Why their view should determine policy is a mystery. Many nonsmokers have no wish to impose a draconian ban on smoking. Smokers have been driven outside and live with that circumstance.

Affirmative action is out-of-date

by La Mont Chappell II Daily Lobo columnist Thurgood Marshall felt affirmative action was a good policy for American institutions because it helped to balance the effects of past discrimination. When affirmative action first came into existence, Marshall was a Supreme Court justice.

Smoking ban would help those who are trying to quit

Editor, I am a pharmacy student at UNM, and after reading Kristen Woodruff's letter in the Daily Lobo on Thursday regarding smoking on campus, I felt I needed to add a bit. I agree that second-hand smoke can be lethal. Not only do you have to worry about the smoke getting into others' lungs, but there is also the chance - quite big, in fact - that other people are trying to quit smoking.

Creationism needs evidence before it is taught as science

Editor, I'm writing in response to Alex Goldsand's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Friday concerning creationism - or as the religious right have cleverly called it, intelligent design. Before getting to the science part, I'd like to examine Goldsand's claims about sociology and women's studies courses.

Poor labor laws exploit women

by Santhosh Chandrashekar Daily Lobo columnist Padmavathi, a 39-year-old factory worker employed at Shalini Creations in Bangalore, India, collapsed at the factory gate and died soon after in a hospital on Sept. 18. Earlier, Padmavathi met with her manager and asked for leave to go to the hospital, only to be verbally abused.

Vehicles on campus pose threat to disabled students

Editor, I had the opportunity to comment on the dangerous bicycle, skateboard, motor scooter and motorcycle situation at UNM over the air Thursday on KUNM. These vehicles, prohibited by UNM policy in pedestrian areas, pose a enhanced threat to students with disabilities.

Key to healthy campus starts with tobacco ban

Editor, As the flagship university in New Mexico, everyone at UNM needs to think about setting a healthy example. If UNM wants to be the healthiest campus in the state, it must remove tobacco and deadly second-hand smoke. Tobacco causes cancers of the lung and other parts of the body and causes heart disease in smokers and nonsmokers.

Liberals are too quick to attack intelligent design

Editor, It seems Dennis Kinzler's letter published in the Daily Lobo on Sept. 17 has ignited yet another ideological struggle between liberals and conservatives on campus. In less than one semester, Daily Lobo readers have been forced to endure fruitless conjecture on the subjects of homosexuality, abortion, the Roman Catholic Studies program and now evolution.

There is no just reason to ban smoking on campus

Editor, Is outdoor second-hand tobacco smoke a real health concern? I believe the Faculty Senate needs to update its "Smoke-Free Campus Proposal" of April to include some evidence more conclusive than just the Surgeon General's Warning that outdoor second-hand smoke is a noteworthy health concern for nonsmokers.

UNM should get creative to promote recycling bins

Editor, I feel it is important that recycling become second nature for students, staff, faculty and community members who spend time on our beautiful campus. Unfortunately, I've been woefully disappointed at the lack of attention recycling gets on campus.

Fast-food not an argument against a ban on smoking

Editor, Reading Monday's editorial regarding smoking on campus left me wondering if the Daily Lobo staff was trying to be sarcastic. It's not that the editorial was ridiculous in itself; it's simply that the article was highly redundant of the last two years of debates on smoking on campus.

University should offer healthy food on campus

Editor, I am writing about UNM's food offerings. I conducted research on what foods were offered in the main food venues on UNM's main campus. The survey was conducted during the summer, so two food venues in the SUB were closed, and I couldn't read the full menus of Kabuki and Casita.

On-campus group helps students get food stamps

Editor, On Tuesday, Christie Abeyta wrote a letter in the Daily Lobo addressing hunger, and her class put on an event regarding this on Wednesday. Now the event is finished, and people want to know what involvement opportunities there are. Fortunately, I know of an organization right here on campus - Hunger and Homelessness.

Personal choice no longer personal when harmful

Editor, Friday's Daily Lobo contained an article about making UNM's Main Campus smoke-free. The article says that the regents want more input from students before they act on the proposal. The Board of Regents is seeking this input from ASUNM. I would like to propose that the regents publish an e-mail address in the Daily Lobo so that students can give this feedback directly to them.

Students can make impact on hunger in New Mexico

Editor, For the past week, the Daily Lobo's Opinion pages have been focused primarily on the on-going debate between evolution and theories of creation. While this debate is certainly important, we believe space should be devoted to more pressing issues affecting our communities.

The Setonian

Ban on smoking at UNM doesn't have factual basis

Editor, With all the debate regarding smoking on campus, it seems smokers have become a kind of ineffable liability and a predominant indictment of carcinogens on otherwise virgin lungs. However, it is farcical that smokers have been backed into this position based on what is largely an emotional, knee-jerk response that has no basis in the facts or any kind of personal responsibility.
