Love should not be limited by artificial boundaries

Editor, In his letter to the Daily Lobo published Tuesday, Jason Brown wrote, "As a Christian, I do not believe that homosexuality is a morally acceptable lifestyle." In its general appeal to the authority of the Christian religion, the statement appears to be speaking for all Christians.

Homosexuality isn't wrong even if called unnatural

Editor, Recent letters on the question of the naturalness of homosexuality have gotten me thinking. What's natural anyway? Maybe natural means the way things would be if humans weren't always messing things up. Whatever the definition is, certainly we heterosexuals never do anything unnatural.

GPSA should be applauded for tackling global issues

Editor, As a former participant in student government, I must applaud the efforts of the GPSA on its resolution that calls for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Too often, student governments are forced to limit their perspective. A high school student government is lucky if it is allowed to decide the homecoming carnival colors.

Student government needs to focus on local issues

Editor, I have been against the Iraq War from the start. I think it's a disaster that's been horrifically mismanaged and was executed with disgusting dishonesty, and I'd like nothing better than for it to be over. Despite my great disdain for the war, though, I was dismayed to learn that GPSA had passed a resolution calling on Congress to demand immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

Professors rely too much on one-sided textbooks

Editor, I am generally in support of the idea that professors choose their own textbooks and that any book will have the agenda of the author in mind. But recently, I have encountered a situation where the books professors choose are so one-sided that rather than feeling like I'm learning about the subject I'm paying to learn, I end up listening to the soap-box ramblings of someone I'm not allowed to disagree with.

Bible too dated to prove homosexuality is wrong

Editor, This letter is in response to Jason Brown's paradoxical letter published in the Daily Lobo on Tuesday. The very definition of a bigot is one who strongly opposes the views of others based not on reason but on frivolous things such as creed, race or uneducated opinion.

Daily Lobo headline doesn't accurately represent article

Editor, Tuesday's very misleading front-page headline in the Daily Lobo did not come close to accurately representing the actual content of the article. "Hate crimes office gets thumbs down" conveys the inaccurate idea that UNM as a whole squarely rejected the tolerance education initiative.

Vitamin supplements no substitute for healthy diet

Editor, A few points raised in Dr. Peggy Spencer's well-intentioned column in Wednesday's Daily Lobo deserve to be elaborated on. Reference is made to a standard American diet that is unlikely to lead to vitamin deficiencies, but at the same time, because some people have exceptionally poor diets, supplementation is recommended.

UNM politics puts students 2nd

by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo columnist I recently did something I expect few others have: I read President David Schmidly's "A New President's Vision," his set of goals for the University. Such documents, which are apparently designed to demonstrate that the University has that vision thing, are regularly issued by UNM presidents and regents and, apart from creating new administrative structures, rarely result in anything.

Editorial: Student government has no place in foreign policy

GPSA crossed a line when it passed a resolution Saturday demanding the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. The resolution will be sent to President Bush, all members of the New Mexico congressional delegation and the Board of Regents. It is reminiscent of a situation in the spring, when members of ASUNM tried to pass a resolution for the extradition of Luis Posada Carriles, who faced charges in Venezuela for the deaths of more than 70 people.

Community should help stop racial harassment

Editor, We write in response to the recent incidents of physical and verbal harassment of people of Middle Eastern and South Asian descent. These ugly incidents have occurred near campus, and many have targeted UNM students. Incidents reportedly include sexual harassment, physical aggression and verbal jeering followed by a cynical "namaste," and at least one armed robbery and beating.

The pros and cons of vitamins

by Peggy Spencer Daily Lobo columnist Dr. Peg, I don't normally get many vitamins in my diet. So, sometimes I supplement with Emergen-C packets. Also, I take one whenever I have a hangover. My question is, can you take too many of these? Is it possible to have too many vitamins? Do they contain ...

Daily Lobo owes apology to gay students at UNM

Editor, With the national discourse regarding Sen. Larry Craig's public humiliation - over a guilty plea related to solicitation of an undercover police officer in a public restroom - it's unfortunate that the Daily Lobo chose to respond with the sensational rather than through a measured and objective approach.

Opposing homosexuality doesn't make one a bigot

Editor, It appears that Kenneth Turner, in his letter published in the Daily Lobo on Monday, is making a popular but unwarranted statement in his response to the letter by Benjamin Sanchez. He says if someone expresses an opinion condemning homosexuality, that person must hate homosexuals.

Q & A: Talat Hamdani

Mohammad Salman Hamdani, a Pakistani-born New York City police cadet and medical student, died 6 years ago today in the cascading towers that would also claim the lives of thousands of other victims and provoke an escalating series of barbarous U.S. invasions. I spoke with Talat Hamdani, Mohammad Salman Hamdani's mother and a member of September 11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, about the attacks and the U.S. government's responses.

People need to grow up, get out of their bubbles

Editor, In his letter published in the Daily Lobo on Friday, Benjamin Sanchez correctly pointed out that "there is a large-scale breakdown of basic reason in the minds and behavior of many Americans." Sure, point taken, but let's get down from our horses and, with our feet on the ground, look at the issue again.

Biological research says homosexuality is natural

Editor, In response to the letter by Benjamin Sanchez published in the Daily Lobo on Friday in which he says that "stating that homosexuality is illogical and opposes human nature does not make one prejudiced," he is lying to himself by saying that it is not prejudice.

Johnson Center too noisy, distracting to hold a class

Editor, I have taken advantage of the facilities offered at the Johnson Center. It is a great place to work out, and I am sure it is a great place to participate in various sporting events, if you are into that kind of thing. In fact, I wish I could spend more time improving my physical health and overall sense of well-being by engaging in more activities at the Johnson Center.

Craig's sex scandal hardly considered a national crisis

Editor, It is difficult not to laugh at the plight of Republican family-values and anti-gay folks such as Sens. David Vitter and Larry Craig when they are exposed for the hypocrites that they are. But the reaction of the Republican presidential candidates and senators is disgusting.
