Being a liberal elitist has numerous perks, benefits

Editor, I would just like to communicate a missive to Aaron X. - for extreme - Lenard, on the subject of his letter on Wednesday. I notice he mentioned "liberal elites" and "social elites" in his letter, referring to Joachim Oberst and company. As a liberal, I of course include myself in their ranks, and so I'll say this: Don't dis liberal elitism until you've tried it.

Iglesias pulled through dirt for being disloyal to Bush

Editor, I find it disgusting seeing honorable public servants like David Iglesias swift-boated by hawks like columnist Scott Darnell. U.S. attorneys are political appointees, but their oath requires them to preserve, protect and defend the U.S. Constitution.

Bush sends mixed messages

by Mario Hernandez Daily Lobo columnist In a trip that started Friday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is traveling throughout the Middle East, meeting with political leaders. Although most countries on the list wouldn't raise much of an eyebrow, one country - Syria - caught the attention of not only the Bush administration, but also the mass media.

Atheism isn't oppressive toward theist religions

Editor, I am writing in response to a student Suzanne Midani, who said in Tuesday's cover story that religions should stick together despite their differences because they all face oppression from atheists, in regard to Judaism, Christianity and Islam believing in the same God.

Justice and impartiality are key to peace in Gaza

Editor, Rachel Fredman's description of the situation in Gaza and the West Bank in Monday's Daily Lobo is riddled with distortions. Although she claims Gaza has been under the "sole jurisdiction" of the Palestinian Authority since Israel's withdrawal in 2005, she takes no account of the fact that Israel controls all of Gaza's borders, including those with Israel itself, as well as its border with Egypt and its Mediterranean coastline.

UNM should put emphasis on education, not sports

Editor, It is amusing how often people like to use the term "free market" without really knowing what they are talking about. Recognizing a supply-and-demand curve does not qualify alumnus Rudy Chavez as an economist, and if he were trained as one, he would understand the theory he used in his argument is meant for a for-profit venture.

Liberals should check facts against multiple sources

Editor, After reading lecturer Joachim Oberst's letter in Friday's Daily Lobo, it has come to my attention that people like him should not be entitled to an opinion, as their intelligence is in question. It is high time Oberst and the other left-wing elites get something through their horrendously thick skulls: President Bush's election was not illegitimate.

U.S. must take a hard line against Israel's occupation

Editor, The media is ordinarily full of what seems to be justification for Israel's illegal occupation of Palestinian territory, which apparently is institutionalized terrorism, as in terrorism on a national level. It's good to be reminded by letters like the one by Vicki Johnson on Tuesday that Hisham Jabi's presentation in the SUB on March 24 was to inform people of what Palestinians are experiencing.

Student senators should focus on representation

Editor, These past few weeks, the actions of some ASUNM senators have been both honorable and appalling. However, I would like to make a few points as to what has happened and what I hope to see for this election. To begin, I feel the sanctity of ASUNM is lost when those representing the student body are told to keep their opinions to themselves and not address tough issues.

Palestinian visitor sheds light on illegal Israeli policy

Editor, On Monday, student Rachel Fredman responded to a March 26 Daily Lobo article about Palestinian Hisham Jabi, who spoke at UNM about life under the Israeli military occupation. Fredman attacked Jabi's reported comments as "particularly absurd." She described herself as "an occasionally hawkish Jewish American" and president of the UNM Israel Alliance.

ASUNM must negotiate before making decisions

Editor, As an ASUNM senator, it is my responsibility to provide information to people who are unable to attend ASUNM meetings. Two weeks ago, a bill was introduced that would change the voting procedures for ASUNM to allow online voting and would put a polling station in Mesa Vista Hall.

Track program left in dust; Alford gets big paycheck

Editor, I find it disgusting that UNM would shell out a salary of $975,000 per year for a basketball coach who has yet to prove himself. However, I acknowledge that UNM has the right to pay its basketball coach however it pleases, and that any student who disapproves could simply transfer to another college.

Spring Storm encourages UNM to help community

Editor, Flowers are blooming, the days are longer, and I'm spending less time in class and more time at the Duck Pond. You know what that means: Spring is here. But it also means that Spring Storm is coming up. I challenge the students, faculty and staff of UNM to sign up.

Coach's salary a lesson in free-market economics

Editor, Caleb Fort's article on Wednesday about Steve Alford's salary presented an argument that, at its heart, carried the premise that people have to justify the salary of a basketball coach beyond pointing out that it is a response to the free market and leaving it at that.

Violence in prison can be democratically resolved

Editor, I am writing in response to (or perhaps in an attempt to build on) Toby Kramer's letter in Wednesday's Daily Lobo about sexual violence in prison. This is a terrible problem, and the fact that we've become so callous to it - that it's become nothing more than a joke - is truly horrifying.

Nitrogen won't cause shrinkage

Dear Dr. Peg, I went to see my dermatologist a few days ago about small bumps I noticed on my penis. My dermatologist said they were molluscum contagiosum, and she used a liquid nitrogen spray to freeze them off.

Birth control is cheaper than unintended births

Editor, Birth control prices on college campuses have increased upward of 100 percent because of the pharmaceutical industry's response to actions undertaken by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. No matter who is at fault - CMS or the pharmaceutical industry - the health insurance industry, both private and public, should take note.

Impeaching Bush is vital for the state of the world

Editor, In the beginning of this illegitimate presidency, voices of impeachment were rejected as immature and silenced on the grounds that many of the allegations of corruption, cronyism, incompetence, mendacity, secrecy, criminality, bribery, perjury and unconstitutionality were unfounded, lacking convincing evidence, sour products of a jealous and zealous mind-set of sore losers.

Students who care about ASUNM will go to the polls

Editor, I respectfully disagree with Angel Padilla's letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo criticizing ASUNM senators against online voting. If she suggests there is a possibility of cheating with online voting in the election process, then why would she be so supportive of this idea? Making online voting possible would allow easier access for students, but does it really get more people involved? Students who are informed and really care about campus issues are going to vote with or without online access.
