Alford will bring publicity, prestige to the University

Editor, I am writing this in response to the article by Caleb Fort in Wednesday's Daily Lobo about Steve Alford's salary. The writer's premise is flawed. UNM is not paying a salary of $975,000 per year. If you take a good look at the details of his new contract, Alford is being paid only $210,000 per season from UNM and the taxpayers of New Mexico.

Election should be about making a positive impact

Editor, My name is Louis A. Jeantete. I wish the best of luck to all presidential, vice presidential and senatorial candidates running for ASUNM. I feel that each and every candidate running, whether on PAC, REACH, KEY or as an independent, has the ability to create positive change at UNM.

Coach's big salary doesn't add up to a better record

Editor, Basketball does not interest me, but a $975,000 salary does. That amounts to $37.50 per student per year, which is an increase of $18.27 over former head coach Ritchie McKay. These funds could have been used for a tuition break or a raise for faculty.

Support the troops; bring them home from the war

Editor, Let's get rational about what we support. When I am asked, "Do you support our troops in Iraq?" I reply, "That is a two-part question - yes, I support our troops, but no, I do not support our troops being in Iraq." My support for our troops is unwavering, and I am certain that the best way I can support them is to do all I can to get them out of Iraq as soon as possible.

Athletics unfairly wastes students' tuition money

Editor, I find it deplorable the way UNM has been squandering students' hard-earned tuition money. The first shock was learning that Ritchie McKay was being paid $500,000 a year by UNM. Next came the $600,000 it took to fire McKay, so we could get a new coach instead of letting McKay's contract run its course.

MySpace not appropriate in pods during peak time

Editor, Having computer pods at students' disposal is one of my favorite things about our campus. These pods and ITS stations have helped me print papers, study and e-mail professors, among other things. I am used to the line that awaits me through the front door of the Lobo Lab in the SUB, though sometimes students' personal use of the computers is not respectful toward other students.

States do nothing to stop sexual violence in prison

Editor, I apologize for the graphic nature of this letter. Please do not let the ugliness of the truth cause it to be hidden. In 2005, the Texas Rangers documented how prison guards in Texas juvenile detention facilities would sexually abuse inmates. No charges have been filed yet.

Anti-war protesters should pay attention to the facts

Editor, This letter answers Jason Darensburg's question in Friday's Daily Lobo about why anti-war demonstrators are being met with counter-protesters who support our troops and President Bush. The main reason is because we are so tired of the bovine excrement perpetrated by people like Darensburg in this country.

Sens. against online voting aren't fit candidates to run

Editor, Who is unethical? Who will cheat? I have tried to find reasons why some ASUNM senators believe online elections or a polling station at Mesa Vista Hall will increase the probability of unethical campaigning in the next election. The only two senators who voted against online voting are the senators leading two slates of candidates who are fighting to take control of the student government.

New basketball coach not much of an improvement

Editor, After suffering the past five seasons under former head coach Ritchie McKay, I cannot believe that UNM has decided to bring in Steve Alford as the new men's basketball head coach. Let's do a quick comparison to see if we are in fact getting someone better.

Part-time faculty deserve pay raise, more benefits

Editor, I was delighted to read in Thursday's Daily Lobo that part-time faculty are being considered for a raise from the state. But I was dismayed by the attitude of Jamie Koch, president of the Board of Regents. Koch should be embarrassed to state flatly, as he did, that, "We're not increasing salaries for part-time faculty.

Sports should be about life lessons, not money

Editor, As tuition continues to rise, and students and professors struggle to make ends meet, UNM sees it fit to pay the new men's basketball head coach $975,000 a year. How disgraceful. Where are our priorities? Has anyone checked the salary of UNM professors lately, or the ongoing struggle of our part-time professors who receive few if any benefits? The men's team has produced several players who have no regard for UNM rules or the laws of our society.

Attorney deserved to be fired

by Scott Darnell Daily Lobo columnist David Iglesias says his firing as U.S. attorney was politically motivated, and he was threatened and intimidated by phone calls he received from Sen. Pete Domenici and Rep. Heather Wilson. The Department of Justice is now under fire for not properly outlining the reasons behind the firings of Iglesias and seven other U.

Buying new textbooks won't bring down prices

Editor, It has long been debated that textbook prices are too high. I believe they are overpriced, but to say that not buying used textbooks will help bring the overall price of new textbooks down is ludicrous. In a country of big businesses, hasn't anyone noticed that the price of a product does not go down even when the cost of producing a product goes down? Does anyone wonder where that money goes? The money goes to the big businesses that make the product, obviously.

Helping the less fortunate pays off in joyous ways

Editor, Throughout the history of civilization, people have always been diverse in their economic status and lifestyle. As the saying goes, "The rain falls on the just and the unjust alike." It is seen as ordinary that some are poor and others are rich. However, with the many breakthroughs of the modern age and the degree of economic and political maturity that the world has reached, it would seem like we could prevent the less fortunate members of society from so much suffering.

Calling something natural doesn't make it morally OK

Editor, There have been some letters in the Daily Lobo recently with an old argument attempting to morally justify homosexuality. This argument states that because animals naturally practice homosexuality, then homosexuality must be natural, and thus OK. I am not denying that homosexuality occurs in nature, and there have been many documented cases which clearly illustrate this.

Those leading Iraq war should send in their kin

Editor, I am so tired of the blatant hypocrisy Americans live with every day. Why is it that all the anti-war demonstrations around the country are now being confronted by counter-protesters supporting the war, shouting slogans like, "Traitors," "You dishonor our dead," or "Support our troops and President Bush.

KUNM broadcasts aren't meant to offend listeners

Editor, I'm writing in response to Jeffrey Bullard's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo, in which he criticizes KUNM's "Street Beat" hip-hop show for playing songs with offensive lyrics. We do have policies that prohibit the use of indecent language, except during the "safe harbor" period, after 10 p.

UNM needs to improve conditions in the SRCs

Editor, I live on campus in the SRCs. Tuesday morning while I was doing some yoga, a cockroach scuttled across the carpet in my bedroom, two inches from my face. I calmly paused my yoga video and got what my roommates and I call "the cockroach catcher" - a designated cup and piece of cardboard we use to catch the roaches so we can take them outside to kill them with Raid.

Spring pollen spurs allergies

While you were gone over break, as you have no doubt noticed, spring sprang out in full force - warm temperatures, flowering trees and, of course, pollen. The juniper count increased five-fold over spring break and is now being joined by other flowering trees. So if you're sneezing, coughing, running and dripping, join the crowd.
