Greedy book publishers keep prices on the rise

Editor, Student Steven J. Aragon, the resident New Mexico textbook publishing expert, has an uncanny ability to explain economic theory in practice within the textbook industry. "Textbooks are expensive because students buy used books," he stated Monday in the Daily Lobo.

Forbidding gays to marry shows ignorance, bigotry

Editor, In the Daily Lobo on March 9, Benjamin Sanchez argues that the complementary nature of male and female genitalia and the associated reproductive capacity means "those who want to change the definition of marriage are living outside of objective reality.

ASUNM senators choose Greeks over student body

Editor, I've read various stories in the Daily Lobo with both positive and negative reactions from peers and myself. However, I've never felt so strongly about a story until I read about the bill for a polling station in Mesa Vista Hall. It's not the bill's failure that angered me, but rather the cavalier attitude that some of the ASUNM senators had about shooting it down - in particular, the words of Sen.

Hip-hop may offend some but helps to define many

Editor, I'd like to thank Jeffrey Bullard for his letter in Monday's Daily Lobo about the March 9 "Street Beat," my show on KUNM radio. I take all comments to heart and evaluate them accordingly. As for suggesting I may be addicted to cocaine, that is a comedic but uninformed comment on my own lifestyle.

Eliminating student aid harsh penalty for drug use

Editor, Has the war on drugs become a war on education? In January 2005, law enforcement officers found a very small amount of marijuana inside a house I was sharing with two other students. A direct consequence of my pleading guilty to possession was that I immediately became ineligible to receive financial aid to help pay for my tuition at Northern State University in South Dakota.

U.S. attorney firings point to White House deception

Editor, It has been reported that former U.S. Attorney David Iglesias was not put on the White House's firing list until after receiving phone calls from Sen. Pete Domenici and Rep. Heather Wilson. The U.S. attorney in California, Carol Lam, was fired one day before executing a search warrant on former CIA official Dusty Foggo in the investigation of Wilson's good friend, former Rep.

Homosexual behaviors not unique to humans

Editor, On March 9, Daily Lobo alumnus Benjamin Sanchez made an argument against homosexuality based on the fact that the biological ability to reproduce is limited to a male and a female. While I don't care to comment on most of his arguments, I would like to point out that there is considerable homosexual behavior among animals.

Late-night KUNM show promotes discrimination

Editor, The KUNM radio station airs a program called "Street Beat" Fridays and Saturdays from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. I am a gay man living in rural New Mexico, and as much as I love good music, the stuff played on the program, for the most part, is degrading to people.

Some SUB employees lack customer courtesy

Editor, After a day filled with strenuous and stressful classes at UNM, a trip to the SUB for a quick bite to eat and a few minutes to chat with friends is a time to get away. The issue I am about to address has really bothered me and my peers for quite some time now.

Evolution allows people to select same-gender mates

Editor, In his letter in the Daily Lobo on March 9, Benjamin Sanchez chose to turn a blind eye to a fundamental fact of nature: Human beings are unlike any other animal on the planet. This is because evolution has supplied us with a brain that allows us to rise above basic animal instinct.

Used textbook sales force publishers to raise prices

Editor, Students have the power to decrease the cost of textbooks. They should not have to depend on ASUNM, the UNM Bookstore or the textbook fairy to solve the problem. To reap the rewards of cheaper textbooks, just follow this simple plan: Stop buying used textbooks.

Editorial: U.S. attorney controversy mocks our Constitution

Of the three branches of government, the U.S. Constitution sets aside one - the judicial branch - to be free of politics. Federal attorneys are supposed to be selected and retained because of their skills, not their political leanings. This impartiality is the cornerstone of the American legal system, the principle that sustains our government over time.

Homosexuality defied by our reproductive nature

Editor, In my introductory biology class at UNM, a professor often described the union between a man and a woman as a lock and key. He used this analogy to highlight the complementary nature of man and woman. As the right key fits perfectly in the lock it was made for, so too do man and woman fit perfectly together.

Reporter misrepresented core of language society

Editor, I was a participant in the recent World Language Expo, and I was also present at the table representing the Philological Society at UNM. First of all, I feel that your reporter was misrepresenting herself by not announcing that she was with the Daily Lobo before she started asking questions.

Katrina relief volunteers fatigued on a daily basis

Editor, Deluge, flood of rain, tornado - these words evoke a sense of hopelessness and hope at the same time in the city of New Orleans at the beginning of 2007, almost two years since the hurricane season became a nightmare for thousands of citizens. Some lost their lives because of bureaucratic incompetence, and others because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

U.S. government should give vets better treatment

Editor, My heart goes out to my fellow veterans who have received such horrible care at the Walter Reed Hospital, the premier site of health care for those who have served and been severely injured. What happened at Walter Reed is the tip of the iceberg.

Human beings should use their natural resources

Editor, Jump on board the environmental locomotive if you will not accept any sort of dissenting arguments to global warming. Movie stars, sports figures, politicians and thousands alike are joining the new sacrificial faith. They tell us that we can avoid Armageddon if we follow them blindly.

ASUNM candidates should focus on affordable books

Editor, ASUNM elections are approaching, and candidates will become more active on campus to seem involved and appealing. I have a suggestion for candidates looking to reach out: Campaign to make textbooks affordable. The average student pays about $400 a semester on textbooks, which is about one month's rent.

Women's Day will stress importance of education

Editor, On March 8, the world is recognizing the importance of females throughout the past, present and future on International Women's Day. Oftentimes, the roles of women in society are undermined through stereotypical assumptions made by those with many psychological and sociological problems.
