Letter: Students should help search for next president

Editor, Wednesday's events force us to consider the qualities that we want the next UNM president to possess. As a university, UNM primarily sells one product: an education for students. I feel that our next president needs to possess an academic focus and, inherently, a student focus as well. President ...

Letter: Incentives, sexism root of sex-selective abortions

Editor, I am aware of the Daily Lobo's policy limiting the printing of responses to letters, but nonetheless I feel that to leave this issue as is would be an injustice to the idea of balanced representation in the media. My particular qualm stems from the oversimplification and perhaps even misinterpretation ...

Letter: Money too scarce to pay Caldera after resignation

Editor, So another president leaves UNM with a nice payoff. If the resignation is immediate, why are we giving Caldera six months' salary? This is money the University does not have - otherwise the regents would not have had to implement the recent tax on departmental budgets to cover other institutional ...

Letter: Caldera paid for resigning while UNM gets poorer

Editor, What a sweet deal. Resign and get paid for it - do you blame Caldera? Oh, and receive a position in the UNM School of Law, too. It might be better for UNM that President Caldera is leaving, but maybe not. Maybe the UNM Board of Regents is really doing us all a favor, or maybe not. One ...

Letter: Instructor evaluations may undergo makeover

Editor, There are few issues that elicit as strong reactions as course evaluations. It is not uncommon to hear comments from students such as, "My input does not matter, and it won't change anything." Among faculty, there are widely held views that course evaluations are popularity contests, and ...

Letter: U.S. should set example by eliminating all nukes

Editor, I've been reading articles in New Mexico and out-of-state newspapers concerning the insistence of this administration that Iran, North Korea and other Third World countries not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons programs. They say it would threaten our security. Other countries that presently ...

Editorial: Next UNM president should know students

Being a student at UNM is more than just attending classes and trying to get good grades. It's about making connections, joining organizations and forming relationships with teachers and peers. Being president of this University is about more than fundraising and serving the University's needs. It's ...

Letter: No womb? Then no right to make abortion decision

Editor, Ignorant men are the greatest threat to women's liberation. In regard to Benjamin Sanchez' moronic and insulting letter explaining how abortion is the greatest threat to women's liberation, I'd just like to remind him of one simple fact that perhaps has been overlooked by a lot of the abortion opponents: As a man, he and other men have no right to tell any woman what to do with her body.

Column: Help Big Easy bounce back

by Samara Alpern Daily Lobo columnist When Hurricane Katrina ruptured the New Orleans levees, 25-foot waves of water pounded into the city ahead of 150 mph winds. The whole region struggles to deal with the aftermath of being submerged in noxious waters for weeks.

Empower women through education, love, respect

Editor, The "Abortion is the greatest threat to women's liberation" letter in Tuesday's Daily Lobo is a total farce, a sham - a Three Card Monty hiding as support for woman. Comparing how India and China use abortion to America is silly at best, outright fraud at worse.

Letter: To stop drunken driving, check roads, not parties

Editor, I am familiar with the presence of crime in Albuquerque. Last year, a drunken driver hit me. My car was totaled and the driver fled the scene. The driver was a middle-aged man who could have been caught if road checks were in place that night. This month, my car was stolen while parked on campus.

Letter: Health care plan increases costs for UNM employees

Editor, Well, another year has come and gone, and in the most sarcastic way I can muster, I would like to thank those people at UNM who were responsible for our new health care plan. For the first time in my life, I will probably be able to itemize my medical deductions this year because of the terrible insurance plan UNM has provided for its employees.

Letter: Abortion is greatest threat to women's liberation

Editor, The emancipation of woman is leading to her downfall. Throughout most of the history of humanity, man has held full control over when to have children and how many children to have, even though it was the woman who carried the children within her body and cared for them until they left home.

Letter: Minimum wage comment appalling, ignorant

Editor, I am writing regarding the "Daily Lobo asks you" segment in Friday's Daily Lobo regarding the minimum wage proposal that failed to pass in Albuquerque. I am absolutely appalled at the cavalier way in which the students the Daily Lobo interviewed dismissed the importance of such a proposal.

Letter: Bush needs to consider medical marijuana reform

Editor, I am disabled due to bipolar disorder. As an American, I do my best to contribute to our society and try to make things better for those around me. I try to do what the doctors say - I take the Prozac, I try to interact with those around me, and I fight tooth and nail with this illness.

Letter: Parents, not government, should filter Internet porn

Editor, The recent subpoena by the Justice Department against Google raises a scary proposition. The claim is that the department wants to curb child pornography and states that the law can do a better job than software filters. First of all, it is up to parents to be responsible and pay for filters.

Letter: Legislative funds needed for pre-K initiative

Editor, The New Mexico Legislature has an important task this session - to decide how much to fund Gov. Richardson's pre-kindergarten initiative. Pre-kindergarten programs work. Kids who get early access to learning do better in reading, math and language skills.
