Letter: To stop drunken driving, check roads, not parties

Editor, I am familiar with the presence of crime in Albuquerque. Last year, a drunken driver hit me. My car was totaled and the driver fled the scene. The driver was a middle-aged man who could have been caught if road checks were in place that night. This month, my car was stolen while parked on campus.

Letter: Health care plan increases costs for UNM employees

Editor, Well, another year has come and gone, and in the most sarcastic way I can muster, I would like to thank those people at UNM who were responsible for our new health care plan. For the first time in my life, I will probably be able to itemize my medical deductions this year because of the terrible insurance plan UNM has provided for its employees.

Letter: Abortion is greatest threat to women's liberation

Editor, The emancipation of woman is leading to her downfall. Throughout most of the history of humanity, man has held full control over when to have children and how many children to have, even though it was the woman who carried the children within her body and cared for them until they left home.

Letter: Minimum wage comment appalling, ignorant

Editor, I am writing regarding the "Daily Lobo asks you" segment in Friday's Daily Lobo regarding the minimum wage proposal that failed to pass in Albuquerque. I am absolutely appalled at the cavalier way in which the students the Daily Lobo interviewed dismissed the importance of such a proposal.

Letter: Bush needs to consider medical marijuana reform

Editor, I am disabled due to bipolar disorder. As an American, I do my best to contribute to our society and try to make things better for those around me. I try to do what the doctors say - I take the Prozac, I try to interact with those around me, and I fight tooth and nail with this illness.

Letter: Parents, not government, should filter Internet porn

Editor, The recent subpoena by the Justice Department against Google raises a scary proposition. The claim is that the department wants to curb child pornography and states that the law can do a better job than software filters. First of all, it is up to parents to be responsible and pay for filters.

Letter: Legislative funds needed for pre-K initiative

Editor, The New Mexico Legislature has an important task this session - to decide how much to fund Gov. Richardson's pre-kindergarten initiative. Pre-kindergarten programs work. Kids who get early access to learning do better in reading, math and language skills.

Letter: Residents deserve second study on contamination

Editor, From 1972 to 1993, the Terminal Effects Research and Analysis Group - a department of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology - tested and developed weapons containing depleted uranium on the mountain next to the community of Socorro. In 1986, there was significant discussion within the community when it learned that the testing was with a radioactive material.

Column: New semester brings hope

by Lucinda Ulrich Daily Lobo columnist Ah, the first days of a new semester. The only time of year I don't have to suffer through a gauntlet of bureaucracy, technology and everyday life to survive as graduate student at UNM - as was illustrated by the last days of the fall semester. Files saved to CDs mysteriously disappeared; papers that were painstakingly crafted and saved to the hard drive of my laptop were mysteriously locked the day before most of them were due; research files for a paper that was worth almost 50 percent of my grade in one class was saved in a departmental cyberspace campus network - with assurance from a technical expert that I would be able to access this information from any computer in the universe.

Letter: The mentally ill are often stigmatized by society

Editor, There is a fine line between right and wrong. I believe Anne Rice's letter to the Daily Lobo regarding students' ignorance about mental illness makes a crude point that education and psychology are going to bring students to the light, which is not necessarily true.

Letter: Calling war critics cowards reminiscent of fascism

Editor, According to Cali Garcia's letter in the Jan. 9 issue of the Daily Lobo, "We fight on - pissed off, but fighting on." The irony is that, presumably, Garcia is fighting for democracy, yet he claims to fight for "our idea of what it should be like, not yours." So peace is not a part of your agenda?

Letter: State should crack down on uninsured motorists

Editor, Gov. Richardson's declared Year of the Child should include reducing the probability that our children will be killed on the road. Richardson and the New Mexico Legislature have the power to help reduce the senseless injury and deaths of many men, women and children on the road.
