Letter: President Bush a traitor to cause of democracy

Editor, It is believed that Voltaire said something like, "I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Today we have a president who is trying to use the fact that some people do not support his policies to label those people as traitors to the cause of democracy, and thereby increase his power and control over all of the citizens on this nation.

Letter: Whisked away by the cozy sounds of a sousaphone?

Editor, Thank you, Debra Au, for a great review of Mac M's CD, Get Your Big Leg Down. I know Martin, and he is a fantastic musician. He even works at UNM, which shows that real people do exist and work here. I have a feeling, though, that one little item was not exactly what you meant.

Letter: Richardson shifting N.M.'s resources to the wealthy

Editor, My gas bill just jumped to nearly $300, an outrageous cost for a little heat. It is clear Gov. Richardson's fuel rebate was a publicity stunt in the horrible disaster of Hurricane Katrina, and now we are faced with the real bills. I hope the next legislative session rejects Richardson's giveaway of $100 million of our tax money to a wealthy tycoon for a spaceport.

Editor, The Question of the Week comments about John Hyde, who is accused of murdering five people, were published in the Daily Lobo on Thursday, the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's murder at the hands of a demented man. Two freshmen said, "I don't think you can use mental disorder as an excuse," and, "I feel if he is competent to kill someone, he is competent to go to trial.

Letter: Prohibiting UNM vendors homogenizes campus

Editor, When I first came to this campus five years ago, I was delighted to see the little stalls set up outside Popejoy Hall and the SUB selling scarves, dresses, jewelry, incense, wind chimes and all sorts of novelties and trinkets. My favorite soon became the Sunglass Guy, who sold cheap sunglasses - 3 pairs for $10 - to us green Easterners who were unprepared for the high desert glare.

Letter: Vendors are a unique part of campus community

Editor, When I first came to the University as an undergraduate in 1992, one of the things that let me know I was in a very different part of the country were the vendors in front of the Student Union Building: the used book guy, the jewelry lady, the Tibetan folks and the lady with Guatemalan goodies.
