Letter: Mascots are racist if they offend American Indians
November 7Editor, Regarding the letters to the Daily Lobo about American-Indian mascots, I will relate an incident that a friend related to me. It illustrates how insidious such portrayals of the American Indian can be. She said one Halloween night she dressed up her daughter in an Aunt Jemima costume and went trick-or-treating.
Letter: Anglo school mascots as offensive as others
November 4Editor, This letter is in response to University of Illinois at Urbana faculty member Stephen Kaufman's letter about NCAA colleges and universities having American-Indian mascots, which are racist or oppressive in some way, shape or form. I would like to join Kaufman and add to his claim.
Letter: Fighting for mascot marks a new low for America
November 4Editor, The letter written by Stephen Kaufman for the Wednesday edition of the Daily Lobo was, in short, unintelligent and shortsighted. I know plenty of people after reading this letter will say the same about me, but let me make some key comparisons that Kaufman made.
Letter: Liberals are not at fault for U.S. military failure
November 4Editor, I understand that Andrew Price's article "Liberals Doom America" in Tuesday's Daily Lobo is an opinion piece, and as such is entitled to some freewheeling use of language. However, he resorted to the kind of hollow hyperbole that freshman composition students are warned against every day on this campus.
Letter: Chewing gum cheapest, best way to stay awake
November 4Editor, Regarding Samara Alpern's column about the effects of Red Bull, I have found that chewing gum is about the cheapest and most effective alertness aid for me, and I believe it is far better value for the money than caffeine-containing soft drinks, coffee or even tea.
Letter: UNM should still play teams with ethnic mascots
November 4Editor, I disagree with the stance taken by Stephen Kaufman in his letter arguing that UNM should not compete against colleges and universities that use American-Indian imagery in their mascots. According to people like Kaufman, the use of American-Indian imagery in athletic mascots should be banned because such imagery is racist.
Letter: Dancing burnout losers have too much free time
November 3Editor, As I ambled into Zimmerman Library yesterday, I was pleasantly greeted by the techno dance music that lately has polluted the air surrounding the SUB. Similar to Venice Beach, which attracts hobos masquerading as "street performers," the area surrounding the SUB has seemingly become the Mecca for loitering burnouts.
Letter: University community should keep on giving
November 3Editor, It was truly heartening to see the way members of our University community opened their hearts and homes to those displaced by the recent hurricanes. As the evacuation of New Orleans and other areas hardest hit came to a close, our nation and our local community faced a new and immediate challenge - helping evacuees assimilate to their new communities.
Letter: Politically correct holidays don't hide Christian focus
November 3Editor, Halloween was a sad day for some students. Just because a minority of people objected to the holiday on the grounds that it had religious undertones, Halloween was canceled in at least one school in Boston. The tradition of wearing a costume at school that many children look forward to at the end of October was suddenly taken away.
Letter: America's problems stem from ignorance of history
November 3Editor, In his column in Tuesday's Daily Lobo, Andrew Price stated that Carthage lost the Second Punic War to Rome because the Carthaginian government had no stomach for the casualties and feared the power of a triumphant Hannibal. This is either a grand display of ignorance or a wonderful example of twisting history to match one's political opinions.
Letter: Bias against student shows UNM hires unqualified staff
November 3Editor, Earlier this semester I wrote a letter about the lack of credentials and education in the employees of Student Affairs, and John Bauer's letter in Monday's Daily Lobo frighteningly affirms that there are employees at UNM who have no business in the field of educating young minds.
Letter: Lobos should boycott teams with racist mascots
November 2Editor, A letter from 90 faculty and human rights organizations was recently sent to the presidents and athletic directors of NCAA Division I colleges and universities, urging them to adopt a policy to refrain from engaging in athletic competition with colleges and universities that maintain American-Indian imagery in their sports mascots.
Letter: UNM offers cash prizes in business plan contest
November 2Editor, Life is about opportunities - one door closes and another opens. Our president, Louis Caldera, is committed to opening doors for each and every student at UNM, and we at the Anderson Schools of Management are doing our part. In partnership with other entities on campus, we are sponsoring a Universitywide business plan competition.
Letter: Eat chicken substitutes to stop bird flu's spread
November 2Editor, Avian flu has been all over the news for a number of months now. The consensus seems to be that we are due to have a worldwide pandemic of the flu that will result in the death of millions of people. While H5N1 bird flu hasn't been found in the United States, in 2004 we had a number of confirmed cases of H5N2 bird flu in Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware and Texas, among other states.
Letter: Violence more offensive than preacher's words
November 2Editor, It was once said that before one can truly know where one's enemies stand, one must first know where one is standing. In her letter to the editor in Monday's Daily Lobo, Katarina Garcia's commentary was outrageous, particularly for a college-educated person in 2005.
Letter: Corrupt politicians must face justice for war crimes
November 2Editor, The president and vice president of the United States are responsible for their offices. I recently sent a letter to my only representative in the U.S. Congress, Heather Wilson, about the impeachment of George Bush and Richard Cheney for treason, war crimes and misdemeanors.
Column: Liberals doom America
Andrew Price | November 1by Andrew Price Daily Lobo columnist We have just lost soldier No. 2,000 in Iraq. Although invading Iraq and Afghanistan and trying to give the people of those countries democracy and freedom was absolutely the right thing to do, we never should have done it.
Letter: Social liberalism helps sustain public education
November 1Editor, Social liberalism is sustaining and encouraging public education, rather than running amok as John Bauer states in Monday's Daily Lobo. His diatribe enthusiastically paints broad political canvasses with a few tiny brushstrokes and lambastes the privileged halls of academia while ignoring the poor and unfortunate.
