Letter: It may take a while, but UNM will grow on you
Jessica Del Curto | August 23The fifth time around, the first week of school at UNM isn't so stressful. Fresh out of high school and missing my friends who went to out-of-state schools, the first year of college wasn't a pleasant experience for me. I hated the dorms, hated the cafeteria food, thought fraternity parties were a joke and decided Frontier Restaurant was overrated.
Letter: Supporters of war in Iraq should be on front lines
August 23Editor, So let me get this straight - the United States government took the only secular country in the Middle East and turned it into an Islamic republic? The United States government installed and supported Saddam Hussein for decades; the same goes for Osama bin Laden.
Column: Iraq situation deteriorates
Chris Narkun | August 23by Chris Narkun Daily Lobo While President George Bush addressed a gathering of veterans in Utah and urged Americans to stay the course in Iraq and fight terrorists there rather than in the United States, that country's new political process may have produced a powder keg with the potential to strengthen the insurgency there or, worse, push the country closer to open civil war.
Letter: Iraq War making Texas energy giants wealthy
August 23Editor, President Abraham Lincoln wrote, "As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the republic is destroyed.

Letter: Criticizing recruiters undermines war effort
August 22Editor, The biggest complaint of the anti-recruitment activists is that recruiters make promises they cannot keep. No one knows for sure what was said during oral communications, which is why we have written contracts for just about everything we do. They should be read before signing.
Letter: A return to gas rations would lower fuel costs
August 22Editor, To prevent the gasoline crisis from causing serious financial problems to most of us, some of the following measures, used during World War II, may need to be enacted - a national system of gasoline rationing and national control of gas prices. These measures worked well for the four years in the 1940s when public access to gasoline was a severe problem.
Letter: Minutemen volunteers fit to patrol U.S. border
August 22Editor, It has been repeatedly stated that patrolling the border is the responsibility of federal agencies such as the border patrol and that well-meaning and untrained volunteers should not be trying to do it. In response to this, I would like to say that no one could agree more with this than the New Mexico Border Watch and Minutemen organizations.
Column:No gas for Iraq War critics
August 22by James Stambaugh Daily Lobo columnist I know how to make gasoline prices plummet. They've hit record highs on a regular basis for months now, but there is a way to get them under control. One rainy day, I was standing at the gas pump, grumbling softly to myself, when I had an epiphany.
Column: E85 fuels hope for Earth
Colin Donoghue | August 15by Colin Donoghue Daily Lobo columnist The national energy bill signed by President Bush on Aug. 8 at Sandia National Laboratories will once again have our tax dollars working in the wrong direction. The bill will not raise the fuel mileage requirements of our vehicles or significantly support renewable energy such as solar, wind, hydrogen fuel cells or ethanol fuel.
Letter: State leadership needs to protect public health
August 15Editor, Recent articles in New Mexico newspapers have addressed the need for a new era of consumer protection. What an intriguing idea. Perhaps it is naive in this era of corporate controls, but nonetheless made clearer because of so many abuses of Americans' health: The spraying of horrible chemicals near waterways to get rid of salt cedars, mercury-filled vaccinations and smokestack emissions, chemically sensitive people with serious and worsening medical problems, toxic mold that causes crippling illnesses and fatigue syndromes.
Letter: Administrative bonuses demoralizing for staff
August 15Editor, At the risk of being obvious and bringing the house down on my head, I believe that before bonuses the size of staff salaries around here - or more - are given to UNM administrators, it behooves UNM to understand that hard work and excellence are not only found within the upper administration.
Column: Seriously, vote in 2008
Andrew Price | July 28by Andrew Price Daily Lobo columnist Martin Ch†vez has moved into the defunct headquarters of the Kerry-Edwards presidential campaign. He placed his image on the side of the building and is trying to get re-elected. Gov. Bill Richardson has purchased his new jet and has his picture up in Times Square in New York City.
Letter: Top execs get bonuses while staff gets the shaft
July 28Editor, I fail to understand why UNM has the money to provide bonuses to top executives - for simply doing their jobs - when the Legislature gave UNM a set percentage wage increase. I don't see bonuses for UNM staff who do their jobs well or even extremely well.
Editorial: Look for Daily Lobo's treasure in coming year
July 28Ahoy there, fellow schoolmaties. Welcome to a new school year at the UNM. Many times during the semester, people come into the newsroom or ask those who work here questions about the way the paper works. The crew at the Daily Lobo wanted to give our readers a fun and interesting look into the way the newspaper operates.
