Letter: Canned air may be a benefit
August 25During the Internet crisis here at UNM, some of us found it quite interesting coming up with some plausible business ventures. How about fresh canned air from around the world? Yes, it is understood that they already do this. Not in the way we have come up with though.
Column: Vacation honors tradition
August 25KRT Campus News Service President Bush will spend most of this month at his ranch in Crawford, Texas. By fleeing the White House, he continues a tradition of more than 200 years. That's noteworthy because presidents at ease tend to reveal key aspects of their character, just as Don Van Natta's recent book on presidential golf, First off the Tee, claims.
Letter: Volunteer to decertify United Staff-UNM
August 25Editor, This is in support of letters previously written by Russell Morris and Catherine Osborn regarding initiation of a movement to decertify United Staff on the UNM campuses. For those who may not have read those letters, the gist was that a very small minority of dues-paying members is making decisions that affect all the members of the collective bargaining unit known as United Staff-UNM, about 1,000-1,100 positions.
Column: First week promises many opportunities
August 25by Jennifer Onuska ASUNM President Welcome Back! I am excited to see our campus come alive after the summer break. There are many activities this week for us to take part in, so don't waste any time and enjoy the entertainment. This year, since we, the students, have our Student Union Building back, there are SUB Grand Opening celebrations.
Editorial: Head Baylor coach a disgrace to UNM
August 18Eleven years is a long time in coaching circles. Recently deposed Baylor University head coach Dave Bliss coached at UNM for 11 years with a seemingly spotless record. It has now been discovered that during the investigation into the death of Patrick Dennehy, a former Lobo himself, Bliss allegedly asked his players to lie and say that Dennehy earned money for his college tuition by selling drugs.
Letter: Student Union not very helpful for academics
August 18The recently revamped Student Union Building has opened, but as I recently discovered, the directorship of this building enforces rules that do not keep their clientele in mind - the students of UNM. More specifically I would like to address the policies concerning tabling in the SUB as they pertain to UNM student organizations and academic departments.
Column: Men don't love like women do
August 18by Anya Henry Daily Lobo Columnist Just like Aretha said, "Ain't no way for me to love you if you won't let me." Why are men so afraid of being loved? And what is it that made them afraid to begin with? Was it society that taught them that love is actually a bad thing? I don't put it past society - it's taught people that war and killing is OK - even of the innocent people (as long as they're foreign innocents).
Column: No signs of virus on campus
August 18by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist West Nile Virus is in the news again so it is time to get prepared for our mosquito season. The virus poses a risk to the aged, the very young and to those with immune system problems. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that less than 1 percent of those bitten by a virus-carrying mosquito will become severely ill; others, perhaps 20 percent, may develop only flu-like symptoms, which actually may lead to a natural immunity to the virus.
Column: ASUNM expects fall enthusiasm
July 31by Jennifer Onuska ASUNM President & Amanda Sims ASUNM Vice President Fortunately for some, and unfortunately for others, the fall semester is just around the corner. For those of us who have been working hard at UNM all summer, we are excited to see more students back on campus occupying the new leather chairs at the SUB.
Column: Animals need compassion
July 31by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist I often write about issues of animal cruelty and will continue to do so in future columns. However, I want to share some true stories with you that demonstrate why animals are indeed sentient beings and should not be misused or abused for any reason.
Letter: Death of Saddam's sons
July 31Editor, I respectfully disagree with your editorial "Death of Saddam's sons not a victory." I object to your assertion that killing these evil overseers of Saddam's apparatus of torture and mayhem serves no purpose because the Fadeyeen will keep on killing, our troops will keep on dying and Saddam remains free.
Column: College teaches life's lessons
July 31by Beverly Burris Daily Lobo Columnist Faculty Senate President I've been returning to school in the early fall and late summer for more than four decades, first as an elementary school student in the 1950s, through many levels of schooling, as a secondary school teacher for a time and for the past 20 years as a professor.
Letter: Spring may bring Union action
July 31Editor, The silent majority of United Staff-UNM is alive and well. However, after reading the Regents' resolution on labor relations management, I realize that we have missed the opportunity this year to proceed with the petition process. The appropriate time frame for submission of a petition for a decertification election would be between March 30 and April 30 of the year in which the contract expires.
Letter: UNM union member advocates elimination
July 24Editor, As a non-dues paying member of United Staff-UNM, I would like to begin the movement to eliminate the union as a bargaining agent for those of us trapped in union membership. I have not been concerned with United Staff-UNM's position or actions until now, however it has now become a personal issue.
Column: Co-op contradicts its claims
July 24by Aryn Seiller Daily Lobo Columnist If you think global capitalism has not damned us yet, look at what it's doing to our food. As one of our necessary resources, food is heavily mismanaged to secure Western hegemony in foreign countries. At this point, people do not starve from shortages of food; people die because food is globally manipulated, even in Albuquerque.
Editorial: Death of Saddam's sons not a victory
July 24With the deaths of Odai and Qusai Hussein, President George W. Bush has said it is the most significant sign yet that Saddam Hussein's regime is gone and not coming back. Isn't this what the public was being told back in May at the supposed end of the Iraqi war? That two of Saddam's highest-ranking officials, namely his sons, are dead makes little difference to the American soldiers and families of soldiers who are still suffering casualties while occupying Iraq.
