Letter: U.S. citizens owed answers

Editor, It is quite disturbing to find out that the president of the United States of America knowingly manipulated the American people into believing Saddam Hussein was a nuclear threat to us and to the world (New York Times, July 7, 2003.) Using The State of The Union Address as a soapbox, President George Walker Bush, looked into the eyes of the world, and spread fear and lies.

Editorial: Safety threatened by leashless dogs

UNM is not a leashless dog park and shouldn't be treated as such. Those willing to take a stroll around north campus are well advised to carry a large rock or stick on their journey. For what purpose? For the purpose of warding off dogs and ensuring their own safety against puncture wounds and rabies.

Letter: Cigarette tax will save lives

Editor, Boy, your new editorial board must be seriously jonesing with that added 70 cents per pack and all. I bet they've thought seriously about the tradeoffs between the costs of driving to Sandia or Isleta Pueblos and the cost of a carton up the street at Smith's.

Letter: Population of homeless on campus dangerous

Editor, While going to UNM since 1997 I have noticed vagrants becoming an all too familiar scene. They stand on the corner of the bookstore and outside of surrounding businesses. However, they are becoming an increasingly growing nuisance in areas where I feel they should not be.

Column: Injured animals require care

by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist Occasionally I get calls to pick up baby birds or injured birds on campus. I don't mind picking them up when I am on campus, but there are people you can call who are far more qualified than me when it comes to baby animals.

Letter: Reader's dismissal of union's efforts unfair

Editor, In a letter to the editor in the June 26 - July 2 edition of the Daily Lobo a Ms. Osborn asks, "Why do we allow US-UNM union to represent us?" I know why I allow US-UNM to represent me. It is the only voice we UNM employees have in the legislature and US-UNM, in conjunction with NMFEE, with whom we are affiliated, have been successful in improving our situation at UNM.

Past abuse is no 'tradition'

by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist One of the reasons cockfighters give for legitimatising their "sport" is because it is a tradition. In many cases a tradition is a man's inclination to subjugate women, children and animals. In many societies women are raped, beaten, enslaved as sexual toys, exploited as wives, sold for money, used for entertainment and cheap labor and subjugated in other ways that defy the imagination but are considered traditions.

Editorial: New cigarette tax is unfair to consumers

One of America's most recognized and respected figures once said, "In this world, nothing is certain but death and taxes." It would seem that today this adage holds firmer than when Benjamin Franklin proclaimed it in 1789. In 2003 not much has changed except that now the government that is pushing unfair and unrealistic tax policy is not only our own, but also selectively burdening a specific component of the population.

Column: Zoos foster animal cruelty

by Richard "The Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist I took off work last Friday and visited the zoo with a friend of mine, Viki Elkey. It was the first time I have been there in 15 years, and it is still as depressing now as it was then. Somehow I think zoos have lost their relevancy in our society.

Letter: Court ruling gives hope to those who need it most

Editor, The recent Supreme Court ruling in favor of affirmative action at the University of Michigan Law School has created a great deal of controversy in America for all the wrong reasons. Americans are once again going back to the archaic practice of "Us vs.

Editorial: New administrators key to UNM's future

UNM will start the fall semester young, relatively inexperienced and with potential for either greatness or drastic failure. Too soon to start speaking about Lobo basketball? Probably yes, but the statement made is about UNM administrators, not the UNM hoopsters.

STAFF EDITORIAL: Ruling unfair to graduates

On Monday the Supreme Court ruled on a University of Michigan lawsuit filed by three aspiring law school students. The trio claimed that they were unjustly denied admittance to Michigan's law school because they're white and their applications had been denied in a university effort to diversify the campus by enrolling minorities, even if this meant accepting less qualified applicants.

LETTER: Union works hard to give staff voice

Editor, As President of United Staff-UNM, I would like to take this opportunity to explain our stand and to address several concerns of individuals in our unit. One wrote, "My paycheck amount has gone down in the past few years instead of increasing because of the increase in all of our benefits and without the increase again this year my paycheck amount will go down again.

LETTER: Staff union has history of poor representation

Editor, Why do we allow the US-UNM union to "represent" us? To date, the union has accomplished nothing, regardless of what they print in the Garlic Press. To date this is a history of US-UNM's non-representation: 2001 - Successful "negotiation of 6.

Column: Wild pet trade cruel, dangerous to animals

by Richard "Bugman" Fagerlund Daily Lobo Columnist Once again, prairie dogs are getting the short end of the stick. Now they are being blamed for spreading monkey pox in the Midwest. The good news is that the federal government halted the sale of prairie dogs by the exotic pet trade.

Editorial: Media paves wide road for dead horse

Although the 2004 presidential election is nearly 17 months away, the varied outlets of what America has come to know as the mass media have begun paving the long and twisted road for presidential candidates to travel in their bid for residency at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Column: State of truth clouds reality

by Aryn Seiler Daily Lobo Columnist In recent days the press has reported occurrences that might cause concern. The military is enforcing the total censorship of the Iraqi press. All weapons are being confiscated from the Iraqi people, some facing imprisonment, and our military is assassinating Iraqi "dissidents," often missing targets and hitting bystanders.
