LETTER: Albuquerque police criticism unwarranted

Editor, I am extremely dismayed by the April 17 letter to the editor and its uneducated bashing of Albuquerque Police Officer Tom Sholtis. The claims made are incorrect and unjust. First, if APD was to "clean house" of all officers who have ever been sued or cost the city money, half of the city's police force would be out of a job and the streets of Albuquerque would be without police.

COLUMN: Title IX creates opportunity

by Ashley Pierson Iowa State Daily (Iowa State U.) (U-WIRE) AMES, Iowa - I didn't want it to come out. It was better left hidden deep inside, but like a ticking time bomb, it was waiting for something, or someone to set it off. I am talking about my feminist nature, which stays fairly dormant until aggravated by ignorance and misinformation.

EDITORIAL: APS ignores civil rights boundaries

On the topic of violating free speech, which seems to be an oft-occurring event these days, four teachers are suing Albuquerque Public Schools for First Amendment infringement. These teachers, from Rio Grande High School, Highland High School and Albuquerque High School, were all suspended, according to the Albuquerque Tribune, "for refusing to remove antiwar signs from their classrooms.

LETTER: Group grade issues should be addressed

Editor, David Cuneo raises some legitimate concerns in arguing that group projects may be unfair because those who do less work receive the same grade as those who shoulder most of the burden. Instructors assigning group work can deal with this problem in one of several ways.

Media still can't please left

by Scott Darnell Daily Lobo Columnist The intense military phase of the war with Iraq has come to a graceful close; our armed forces deserve many congratulations for the expediency of this conflict, as well as for the tact they used in carrying out their objectives.

LETTER: TV images of death recall cruelty of war

Editor, One of the really disturbing things about the current war is the refusal of the U.S. media to show images of its human casualties, such as the young American men and women who die or are maimed, much less the Iraqi civilians. But even the well-controlled media slip up once in awhile.

COLUMN: Beware of pseudoscience

Ah, medicinal science. With your bounty of assorted pharmaceutical tablets, catheters, and colostomy bags, what can't you do? Throughout the world, medicinal practices are used daily to treat human afflictions. And with researchers working double time, testing and retesting formulas and hurling beakers full of boric acid at annoying coworkers, the timely discovery of the newest panacea could be mere seconds away.

Letter: One grade for group projects unfair to all

Editor, I just turned in a group project that my team of three had ample time to complete. One member of the group was in tears. I am angry and in shock. One member insisted that "he would make it right." This pledge was made to us despite ample advance warnings from our professor of "no excuses, no exceptions.

Letter: Professors earn next to nothing

Editor, I'm sure that almost every student who picked up the Lobo last Thursday morning had the same feeling when they saw the headline "Tuition increase." The first thing I thought was, again? Second, I thought, how much? Didn't we just raise tuition $300-400 last year? However, despite the unfortunate raise in tuition, I would rather pay an extra $72 a semester than see some of these professors transfer to another University that would pay them what they deserve.

Letter: Lobo abuses privilege, needs ethical standards

Editor, God forbid that someone is held accountable for what they do. I am sick and tired of people abusing the Constitution in order to protect themselves for doing something stupid. With free speech comes a certain amount of responsibility. Apparently the Florida students didn't understand that.

Letter: APD officer cost to taxpayers

Editor, Recently, the City of Albuquerque is again getting the shaft because of the ignorant actions of Albuquerque's finest. Oscar Davis, a former military police officer at Kirtland Air Force Base, has been awarded a total of $120,000 because of the actions of Albuquerque Police Department Officer Tom Sholtis.

Letter: Government not to thank for freedoms

Editor, I would like to respond to Tuesday's editorial, "Newspaper closing prompts questions." While it is unfortunate that Stetson University's student newspaper, The Reporter, was shut down, I disagreed with your take on the "real issue." While I respected the spirit of the piece, one statement was troubling: "As Americans we pride ourselves on these freedoms that our government has taken upon itself to protect and our troops at this very moment are fighting in Iraq to preserve.

LETTER: U.S. unaccountable for atrocious actions

Editor, Recent articles indicate that to be considered patriotic, one must be supportive of all decisions made by the current administration and our politicians. Now some are using our military's accomplishments in Iraq to say that "Bush the elder is a doormat no more.

EDITORIAL: Celebrate poetry, speak your mind

It's time to celebrate National Poetry Month. Let's do it with a healthy dose of suppression. The fuss has died down for the most part, but unfortunately many at UNM are unaware of the gross display of administrative abuse of power that has occurred during the past month and a half at Rio Rancho High School.
