LETTER: Pledge not in need of revision since it does not violate laws

Editor, I am writing in response to the letter I just finished reading sent to you by one Seth Warren Heath. His letter remarked that the pledge defied the Constitution. I would like to point out that in his letter he commented that the government required people to say the Pledge of Allegiance.

COLUMN: Designer logos lose attraction

Oh, alligator, where art thou? Surely you remember the snooty little snapper. Perched on the pecs of preppies in the '80s, the Lacoste alligator - and the Polo pony and Yves Saint Laurent's italicized initials - turned the humble T-shirt into the corporate billboard of the late 20th century. For a while there, no one looked prouder than the logo-laden peacocks who overpaid for the privilege of boosting some designer's stock price.

LETTER: Lack of local doctors shortcoming of program

Your July 3 article on the 'Access Expo' by Doctors Without Borders on campus did not cover the panel discussion that Friday evening, which in turn did not cover an equally vital lack of accessibility and affordability of local doctors in the countries they serve.

COLUMN: Risk-taking underrated

I was wondering what sound advice I might give this week, when it occurred to me that I'm not particularly fit to advise anyone at the moment. Still, I can make observations.

COLUMN: New academic year revives opportunity

Once again, as the loveliest time of year in New Mexico approaches, there also is a special feeling of excitement on our campus. A new academic year is about to begin, and the air is filled with the feeling of new opportunities, new faces, new classes - a scene relived every fall as our college community is renewed, rebuilt and revitalized.

COLUMN: On race, Jackson has no clout

Of course there is, and has always been, racism in the recording industry. This is America, isn't it? In the early days of the 20th century, there was a popular record called "Pickaninny Paradise" instructing black youngsters how to be subservient to their white overlords and thus earn a place in heaven - or at least that section known as Pickaninny Paradise.

LETTER: Pledge needs revamping

Editor, Given the current flap over the phrase “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance, I suggest we consider dumping it altogether. A far more appropriate pledge would be one to the Constitution, such as: “I pledge to read, understand, support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

LETTER: Worker loyalty needed

Editor, I was saddened by your recent front-page story regarding the Pepsi vending deal and the consequential loss of UNM vending services jobs and some valued hard working folks. I have to agree with Terry Mulcahy in his letter to the editor on July 3 when he wonders “what UNM’s priorities are.

EDITORIAL: MLB sells out again

Marc Fisher of the Washington Post was right when he wrote that the big guys in America can walk all over us with a smile because they know that we — the little people — will take it. He was referring to the Major League Baseball All-Star game that was called quits because none of the team owners wanted to risk their pitchers’ arms with extra innings.

COLUMN: War rhetoric insults intelligence

A certain pattern appears to have developed in the art of persuading Americans to war. It goes something like this: 1. Pick a target, presumably with some direct or indirect connection to some actual threat or transgression. 2. Paint that target — and all people who happen to live in its general vicinity — as the most evil, vile thing ever to walk the face of the planet.

COLUMN: Students see ‘values’ differently

by Douglas Turner Knight Ridder-Tribune WASHINGTON — The war on terrorism has not grabbed the hearts and minds of America’s college crowd, that is, if you accept the findings of a poll by a Republican pollster for a GOP-backed action group. One can infer from the survey that a large segment of collegians don’t hold the same passions for what are described as “American values” or “Western culture” that some important people here do.

LETTER: Vouchers are cure to N.M.’s education ills

Editor, The U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled school vouchers constitutional. Now the state Legislature has no excuse for pouring more money into the pit that our public schools have become. Why is it that government is so willing to spend endless amounts of money on programs that no longer live up to expectation? It’s the same old mentality; if it’s broke, throw more money at it.

LETTER: UNM tows corporate line with Pepsi vending deal

Editor, Sometimes I wonder what UNM’s priorities are. I see tuition go up year after year, so I suspect that students are not the priority. Faculty is not given commensurate salaries, and the rest of the staff must fight like hell to be treated as equals.
