Student has fighting spirit despite obstacles

Angelica Torrez is just another face on campus to most who see her. However, getting to know her, she is so much more than that; she’s smiley and happy, always chatting with anyone interested in sharing a moment with her. She’s never alone, constantly surrounded by friends and always so happy to be alive.

Drought requires new agriculture

We prayed for rain and then we prayed for it to stop. Drought has been an increasing reality of New Mexicans’ existence over the past few years. Of the majority of the western United States declared drought-stricken this year, New Mexico was one of the most affected, with the last three years being both the hottest and driest on record.

Regulation needed for guns, not games

Editor, I am writing in regards to the political cartoon in the Sept. 18 issue of the Daily Lobo. The cartoon featured a suited Democrat Donkey telling a man entering the Washington Navy Yard with a gun to ‘Halt! Or I’ll pass more laws!’

Dr. Pegs Prescription

If you are feeling sick, is there a way to determine if you have a bacterial versus viral infection without going to the clinic? For example, temperature? Swollen glands? Green snot? Coughing up stuff?

Anonymity necessary to re-establish free speech

Editor, If I were a part of the staff at the Daily Lobo, I would reconsider the Facebook requirement and return to a system of anonymity. First, let me say that I am an UNM alumnus and very proud of it.

The Lobo Letter

Dear colleagues: As we enter our seventh week of the fall semester, the Graduate and Professional Student Association would like to update you on all the exciting changes and happenings which are upon us.

Anonymity has a place in free exchange of ideas

Editor, The Daily Lobo has no obligation to provide a forum for commenters on its content, much less to enable the anonymous name-calling, word salads and spam that populate many comment threads, but by restricting the privilege of posting comments to Facebook users, the Lobo is tacitly endorsing an agenda of profit-motivated surveillance and sousveillance.

Hateful Lobo trolls are hateful

Where have all the trolls gone? Recently, the Daily Lobo took the admirable step of changing its online comment submission policy to help combat the epidemic of hateful, insulting remarks being posted anonymously on the site by internet trolls.

#RelationshipStatus: New hope for a hopeless romantic

Do you consider yourself a “hopeless romantic”? Why? What does it actually mean? It has been said that when one door closes, another one opens. But a few weeks after I stopped seeing Phillip, I couldn’t find a new door, and started to lose hope in the possibility of love this semester.

Embracing brutality will not create stronger men

Editor, The case of male violence is not normal levels of testosterone. Studies discussed at the 1995 annual Endocrine Society revealed that men with low testosterone are more violent. One UCLA study was on 54 men with low testosterone. They were edgy, irritable and angry.

Time for a new look at direct current?

I’m here today to discuss one of the classic debates of our time: that of AC/DC. Now, you can put away your Angus Young signature edition Gibson guitar and your turntable. I’m talking about alternating current versus direct current

26F would offer equality to DACA students

Editor, We, as students who participated in an endeavor to bring Resolution 26F to ASUNM, feel that the Daily Lobo’s article on the matter in the Thursday, September 12 issue was somewhat inaccurate and may have overlooked the main focus of the issue.

Dr. Pegs Prescription

“After Raymond died, some people thought I should get over it. But you never get over the death of a child,” Elaine Plotkin told me. Elaine’s son Raymond was a freshman at UNM in the fall of 2009, the year the H1N1 flu took the nation by surprise.

Media misrepresents Pope Francis interview

Editor, The Jesuit magazine “America” published an interview with Pope Francis. During the 12,000-word interview, Pope Francis commented on artificial contraceptives, abortion and homosexuality. Pope Francis stated that the Catholic Church cannot talk about these issues all of the time.

The Lobo Letter

Everyone knows that faculty members teach our classes. Some, such as lecturers, our unsung faculty heroes, teach four or even five classes every semester; and some, such as those with “professor” in their title, teach fewer classes because they have other responsibilities.

Tyczkowski’s column is strong in spirit, not facts

Editor, Thank you, John Tyczkowski, for showing your open support of nuclear power in the press in the Sept. 20 issue of the Daily Lobo in your column, “Thorium better for nuclear power.” We need more people outside of just the nuclear power community voicing their support for nuclear power.

Thorium better for nuclear power

It’s widely agreed that cheap access to electricity is a good thing for the average person. However, what’s not so easy is providing that cheap electricity in a manner that won’t cause environmental devastation.

Congress needs more interdependency

Editor, My experience as a counselor and consultant informs me that the cause of our elected Congressmen being unable to resolve any of the problems we currently have is obvious, and that cause is that those Congressmen do not talk to each other.
