UNM Swimming & Diving opens season with Cherry-Silver exhibition

The UNM Swimming and Diving team opened its 2026-27 season with its annual Cherry-Silver Intrasquad meet at Seidler Natatorium on Saturday, Sept. 19. The exhibition gave the Lobos an early opportunity to race in a competitive setting before the beginning of the regular season, with the Silver team edging Cherry 53-47. Newcomer Elsa Reel was one of Silver’s strongest performers, winning both the 50- and 150-yard breaststroke events. Sophia Corder also earned two individual victories for Silver, taking the 50- and 150-yard butterfly. Reel and Corder later teamed with Arianna Stokes and Maya Cansler to win the 200-yard medley relay. Cherry answered with several strong individual performances of its own. Newcomer Liv O’Mahony won both the 150-yard freestyle and 100-yard individual medley, while Olivia Hann captured the 300-yard freestyle in a close finish. Veteran Alex McGill added another victory for Cherry in the 150-yard backstroke.

Football: New Mexico gives Oklahoma all it could handle, loses nail-biter 14-6

The Lobos beat the Lobos. When New Mexico’s offense took one step forward, it always seemed to take two steps back. UNM suffered their first loss of the season to the No. 24 Oklahoma Sooners 14-6 on the road Saturday night, in what felt like a game that was there for the Lobos’ taking. “I’m proud of the way we played,” Head Coach Jason Eck said. “I knew it’d be a close game. I was very confident coming in that we’d have to play a close game.” It was never not close for the Lobos, thanks to their defense.

Football: How the Lobos can pull off the upset against the Sooners

The New Mexico Lobos have a challenge coming up.  The Lobos will travel to Norman, Okla. to face off against the 24th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners this Saturday, and to say it will be tough would be an understatement. The Sooners are coming off of a 17-10 loss to the Michigan Wolverines and are undoubtedly looking to get right.  New Mexico, on the other hand, just broke program records in their dominant 70-7 victory over the Mercyhurst Lakers and are looking to make a statement against one of college football’s best. While the Lobos are not favored to win this game, there are a few things New Mexico will need to do to have a chance o upset the Sooners.

New Mexico’s daunting test against Oklahoma echoes last season’s matchups against Michigan and UCLA

There’s something familiar about facing Power Four opponents in Week 3 for the New Mexico Lobos.  A year ago, as 16-point underdogs, Head Coach Jason Eck and the Lobos marched into Pasadena, Calif. and stomped the UCLA Bruins 35-10 in Week 3. They took the state of New Mexico by storm and never looked back. Fast forward 372 days, and UNM is met with another Power Four conference opponent: The No. 24-ranked Oklahoma Sooners — On the road, in primetime, resembling last season’s match against the Bruins. “This is a much different football team than that (UCLA) team last year,” Eck made clear about Oklahoma.

Football: Home cookin’

The Lakers might’ve been in town on Saturday, but it was the Lobos who put on  showtime.  The New Mexico Lobos dominated the Mercyhurst Lakers, probably making them wish there was a mercy rule as the Lobos blew them out 70-7 on Sept. 12. Like last week, the Lobo defense was once again on full display, making big plays all day, which helped the offense get set up in excellent field position for most of the game.

Former Lobo running back Damon Bankston signs with Green Bay Packers

A new opportunity awaits at pro football’s mountaintop for rookie running back Damon Bankston: the University of New Mexico alum has now joined the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad. Bankston initially signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in May, before being released for final roster cuts after training camp. Bankston played in all three of the preseason games for the Giants. The first matchup versus the Minnesota Vikings wasn’t very eventful for Bankston, as he saw action on a minimal 3 carries for 6 yards.

Volleyball: Lobos end week bruised after back-to-back ranked matchups

The University of New Mexico women’s volleyball team closed out the Ameritas Challenge in Lincoln, Neb., with a 3-0 loss to No. 20 Baylor on Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Baylor defeated the Lobos 25-20, 25-17 and 25-22, dropping New Mexico to 2-6 overall, while the Bears improved to 6-2 on the season. The Baylor match capped a challenging three-day stretch for New Mexico against Nebraska, Georgia Tech and Baylor at the Ameritas Challenge. UNM entered the trip at 2-3 before losing in straight sets to No. 1 Nebraska on Thursday and Georgia Tech on Friday, leaving the Lobos 2-5 going into Saturday’s finale.

Football: Keys to success for the Lobos in Week 2

Following an impressive performance in Week 1, the New Mexico Lobos look to bring their momentum into a Week 2 matchup versus their only FCS opponent on this season’s schedule, the Mercyhurst Lakers. Despite a dominant 38-7 victory over Central Michigan, Head Coach Jason Eck shared this week that he believes there are still improvements that can be made going into Saturday’s matchup.

Isotopes fall short versus Rainiers as season winds down

After a rollercoaster of a series in Round Rock, the Albuquerque Isotopes returned home to host the Tacoma Rainiers. The late-game woes continued for the Isotopes as they lost four games but managed to cap off the series well, winning two of the last three games.

Volleyball: Lobos protect The Pit in Labor Day matchup vs Aggies

The New Mexico Lobos volleyball team notched their second win of the season against longtime rival New Mexico State this week.  New Mexico returned home after going 1-1 during a  two-game road trip in Colorado, and on Monday, Sept. 7, the Lobos took on the Aggies at The Pit.  The Lobos looked to improve on their 1-3 record, but it did not appear to be an easy task as the Aggies came in with momentum, having won three straight before the Labor Day visit to Albuquerque. Despite the challenge on paper, the Lobos emerged victorious against their rival, beating the Aggies 3 sets to 1.

Football: Lobos show up and show out in season opener

The New Mexico Lobos have started off the season with a bang.  The Lobos hosted the Central Michigan Chippewas in the season opener on Sept. 5 and dominated, blowing out the Chippewas 38-7. The Lobo defense was on full display as they put on a clinic all night long.  The defense — which showed how dominant they can be throughout fall camp — also had some bulletin board material to work with coming into the game.

Soccer: Lobos suffer 3-0 defeat against No. 24-ranked Colorado

Following an offensive win versus Cal State Northridge, the New Mexico Lobos looked to continue their hot streak in a game against the No. 24-ranked Colorado Buffaloes on Thursday, Sept. 3. This game marked the first true road game of the season for the Lobos, and proved to be too much, as the team would go on to lose to the Buffaloes 3-0.  The Lobos began the game with goalkeeper Alyson Campbell blocking a goal in the early minutes. The Buffaloes continued their early offensive start, with forward Ruby Hayward also taking a shot on goal which missed wide left. Hayward redeemed herself in the 8th minute, scoring the first goal of the game for the home team. In the 9th minute, Buffaloes forward Micheala McGowan sent a shot straight to the goal, but Campbell jumped up and made a one-handed save to keep the score at 1-0.

On Friday, Sept. 4, the New Mexico Lobos volleyball team hit the road, heading north looking to earn their first win of the season after facing a difficult stretch of matches to open the year. The Lobos entered their matchup against the Northern Colorado Bears determined to turn their early-season struggles around and put a win in the column.

FOOTBALL: UNM’s path to victory in Saturday night season opener

New Mexico won’t be the only team playing “multiple quarterbacks” Saturday night. Central Michigan’s Angel Flores and Jadyn Glasser are both expected to take snaps at quarterback for the Chippewas according to Head Coach Matt Drinkall, meaning five total quarterbacks seeing the field between both teams isn’t out of the realm of possibilities. What does UNM need to accomplish in order to walk out of University Stadium 1-0?

Carson Walch brings NFL experience to deep Lobos WR corps

Whether it was coaching Brandon Marshall in Chicago, Alshon Jeffery in Philadelphia or working alongside some of the NFL’s best offensive minds, New Mexico’s new wide receivers coach Carson Walch has spent more than two decades learning what it takes to play the position. “It was an invaluable experience in the Bears, Browns and Eagles organizations,” Walch said. Walch arrived as the University of New Mexico’s wide receivers coach in February, after spending five seasons with the Cleveland Browns as the player development coordinator from 2021-2022, before being promoted in 2023 to director of offensive skill development.

Local golf tournament to benefit children affected by workplace tragedy

Any Albuquerque golfer eager to get out onto the green could soon have a good opportunity to do so, and for a good cause. The 32nd Annual Toby Wright Memorial Golf Tournament of Kids’ Chance of New Mexico is coming to Sandia Golf Club on Sept. 10. The purpose of the tournament is to raise funds for Kids’ Chance of New Mexico, the state chapter of a national organization that seeks to provide higher education scholarships for the children of workers who have experienced permanent injuries or death due to work-related incidents, according to the organization’s website.

Soccer: Lobos edge out Matadors in ‘nerve-wracking’ match

Following their loss to Gonzaga last week, the Lobo soccer team finished their first homestand of the season with a 3-2 win over the California State University, Northridge Matadors on Sunday, Aug. 30. The Lobos began the game aggressively on offense, taking early shots that were saved by Matador goalkeeper Haydin Mauldin, but Mauldin’s equally aggressive goalkeeping would come back to bite her as she was found guilty of a foul on Lobo forward Nicole Anderson in the 18-yard box. Anderson promptly drilled the ball to the top center of the net on the ensuing penalty kick to give the Lobos the early lead in the 8th minute. “Nicole has been so diligent this last week — any time she’s in the box, she’s finishing. Everything is on frame,” Head Coach Karley Nelson said after the game.
