Guard plays better off bench

Steve Alford said he made a mistake during the UNM men's basketball team's recent two-game losing streak - he didn't bench senior Darren Prentice to start the game. Prentice, one of just three active seniors for Lobos, has been much more effective coming off the bench lately.

Lobos accept NM Bowl offer

After some last-minute angst, the UNM football team will make its second straight appearance in the New Mexico Bowl on Dec. 22. The Lobos accepted the bowl invitation at the Tow Diehm Athletic Training Facility on Monday.

Lobos have an 'off night' fall to Aggies 71-62

LAS CRUCES - Rebounding and ball handling were the two glaring problems for the UNM men's basketball team Tuesday in its 71-62 loss to in-state rival NMSU at the Pan American Center.. The Lobos were outrebounded by the Aggies 44-28 and committed 18 turnovers in the nine-point loss.

UNM to play Nevada in New Mexico Bowl

Staff Report For the second straight year, the UNM football team will go to the New Mexico Bowl. The Lobos will take on Western Athletic Conference opponent Nevada on Dec. 22 at University Stadium. There was speculation that the Lobos would be left out of a bowl game this season, even after they went 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the Mountain West Conference.

Winning streak against NMSU ends

LAS CRUCES - The UNM women's basketball team hadn't lost to NMSU since 1996. But the Lobos dropped a 58-42 heartbreaker on Sunday at the Pan American Center, ending a 22-game winning streak against the Aggies.

Senior uses speed, not height, to win

Every time the UNM basketball team finds itself on a fast break, senior guard Jamaal Smith is always a part of it. Whether he starts it or ends it, he's always there. Smith is the Lobos' fastest player this season and has been a huge part of the team's 7-0 start.

Bowl bid pending outside factors

Even though the UNM football team is unsure of its postseason fate, the team is confident of its postseason chances. "It's been an outstanding year for us," Athletics Director Paul Krebs said. "We don't think our football season is over. We feel very good about the fact, and there is a very high probability that we will be in a bowl game."

Head coach Don Flanagan said Amy Beggin is unlike any other athlete he has ever coached. "Amy has more energy than anyone I've ever seen," he said. "She's not even tired after playing 40 minutes. I've never seen anyone that can play at that level for that long.

Tough defense leads to tourney title

The UNM women's basketball team relied on its stingy defense to win the Albuquerque Midtown Tournament this weekend. After a 79-49 trouncing of Nicholls State in the first round Friday, the Lobos topped Oregon 65-46 in the championship game Saturday to clinch the title.

Senior has standout year despite setbacks

In the final regular season game of his UNM career, Marcus Smith proved why he is considered one of the most talented football players in the Mountain West Conference. Smith helped lead the Lobos to a 27-6 win Saturday against UNLV at University Stadium with a couple of explosive plays.

Runner outpaces adversity

A couple of years ago, Jeremy Johnson was told he probably wouldn't be able to race again. However, Johnson has managed to compile one heck of a career as a UNM cross country and track and field athlete - and there's a chance he isn't done yet.

When opposing teams watch game film on the UNM basketball team, there's one thing they will learn quickly: Don't play too much zone defense. The Lobos have come out the gate like a racehorse, in part because of their effectiveness from beyond the 3-point line.
