Tennis disappointed with MWC ranking

by Brandon Call Daily Lobo If you think the UNM men's tennis team is celebrating its 14-8 record and No. 55 national ranking, think again. The Lobos head into the Mountain West Conference tournament with a 3-3 conference record and a No. 4 seed. Head coach Alan Dils said the seeding is a letdown.

Fall looking good after spring wins

Goalkeeper Mike Graczyk sees similarities between this spring and the spring of 2005. This fall, if the UNM men's soccer team plays anywhere near the level of the 2005 squad, it could be a good year for the Lobos. UNM played two exhibition games Saturday, beating Division II Fort Lewis 1-0 in Albuquerque and then Division III Trinity 3-0 in Santa Fe.

Freshman doesn't waste any time

Freshman Sandra Zmak didn't wait long to make an impact on the UNM women's tennis team. Since joining the team this fall, Zmak has a 21-11 record in singles. She won her first tournament- - the third flight of the San Diego Fall Classic - in San Diego on Nov. 5.

Alford expects staff to bring in recruits

The UNM men's basketball team can focus on recruiting and scheduling now that the staff is in place. Lobo head coach Steve Alford announced the hiring of two more assistant coaches Monday, adding Billy Garrett and Ryan Miller to UNM's program.

Senior captains bid farewell

There couldn't have been a better way for the seniors to celebrate Sunday. Not only did the UNM women's tennis team sweep Air Force 7-0 to conclude Mountain West Conference play, but the team also acknowledged the accomplishments of four seniors - Iva Gersic, Nora Quintal, Allison Davis and Elisa Bonner - who concluded their regular-season collegiate careers Sunday at the UNM Tennis Complex.

Tennis closes conference play

The UNM women's tennis team has endured one roller-coaster ride of a conference season. After starting 0-4 in the Mountain West Conference, the Lobos have won four in a row and ended regular-season play with three sweeps at home this weekend.

Seasoned squad to take reins

It's Donovan Porterie's show to run now. After the UNM football team lost starting quarterback Kole McKamey to a season-ending knee injury early last season, Porterie got a lot of unexpected playing time.

Golfer determined to reclaim top spot

After falling from a No. 1 national ranking, UNM golfer Charlie Beljan is setting the bar high for the rest of the season. Beljan now ranks No. 27, according to Golfstat standings released Friday. The number is down from No. 11 last week.

If Tiyana Peters can repeat her results from last weekend, she can help lead the UNM track and field team to success the rest of the season. Peters won the B section of the high jump at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Friday, clearing 5-8 3/4 to defeat a field of 19 in Austin, Texas.

Aztecs sweep UNM in weekend series

The UNM baseball team had a rough weekend, getting swept in a three-game series against San Diego State in San Diego. With the losses, the Lobos fall to 14-21 overall and 3-6 in the Mountain West Conference. Meanwhile, the Aztecs improve to 21-14 on the season and 6-2 in MWC play.
