After 3rd loss, Lobos still hopeful

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Coming into the 2005 season, the Lobos were picked to finish second in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll. After a three-game losing streak, the team has a mediocre record of 3-3 and sits tied for fourth place with the University of Utah in the MWC.

Coach, Lobos play the blame game

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo UNM football head coach Rocky Long said it was not the fourth-quarter fumble or a lack of execution that derailed the team Saturday in its 27-24 loss to Brigham Young University. It was poor coaching. "We got a bunch of great guys on our football team and they come to practice every day and they work hard," Long said.

Women's soccer The UNM women's soccer team clawed its way back from being two goals down, but couldn't hold on to the tie as it lost 3-2 to the University on Utah on Saturday in Salt Lake City. The loss came two days after the Lobos had their biggest upset win in the program's history.

Loss of key runners no sweat to Lobos

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo The UNM women's cross country leader went down early in Saturday's race, but that didn't stop the team from outperforming most of the field at Auburn. Senior Jacquelyne Gallegos, the Lobos' top runner, was forced to drop out of the women's race with a hamstring injury.

Rookie mistakes leave room for growth

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo The UNM men's tennis team failed to capture a title at the Balloon Fiesta Invitational this weekend. That does not mean the home tournament was completely unsuccessful for the Lobos, though. Freshmen Johnny Parkes and Graeme Kassautzki played in the Flight A division of the singles this weekend, and both advanced to the quarterfinals.

Lobos lose 27-24 to BYU

by Daniel S. Archuleta Daily Lobo The UNM football team lost a heartbreaker of a Homecoming game to Brigham Young University 27-24 on Saturday night at University Stadium. The Lobos surrendered a 24-13 lead they held early in the fourth quarter. UNM head coach Rocky Long took full responsibility for the loss.

UNM battles it out on slippery terrain

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo The UNM men's soccer team forgot its armor, swords and maces Sunday against the Denver Pioneers in Denver, but still managed to come out with a 1-0 win. "You add a fiery bunch and a field that was bumpy, and it turns into a war instead of a soccer game," said junior Andrew Boyens, the Lobos' central defender.

Lobo runners step out on MWC to get leg up

That's why the Lobos will travel to Auburn, Ala. - to try to get some momentum going into the upcoming Mountain West Conference meet. "We're traveling a long way this week, and we're actually doing that on purpose," Henry said.

Coming home to must-win match

The state of Texas was not pleasant for the Lobos. Coming off losses to Mountain West Conference newcomer Texas Christian University and the University of Texas-El Paso, UNM will look to start a crucial MWC run.

Tennis duo's ties began in Croatia

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo UNM tennis players Iva Gersic and Maja Kovacek are the No. 3-ranked doubles team in the country. However, their success and friendship dates back to when neither had set foot in this country. Kovacek, a senior, came to UNM from Croatia on a scholarship for the 2002-2003 season.

Hockey team to break the ice

"We really want to be successful so that we can build the program, and so that we can draw some crowds to our home games this year, since we will be the biggest hockey ticket in town," head coach Joel Cormier said.

Defense to be key in conference play

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo After four games this season, the Lobo defense is starting to click as the football team heads into conference play. Through the first three games of the season the UNM defense was giving up an average of 26 points and 384 yards per game, relying on offensive production and turnovers to pull out victories.
