Polls: men's soccer No. 1 in nation

Staff Report For the first time in history, the UNM men's soccer team is the consensus No. 1 team in the country. All four national polls ranked the Lobos No. 1 after a week in which they beat Southern Methodist University 2-0 Friday and Tulsa University 2-1 in overtime Sunday in the Golden Hurricane Classic in Tulsa, Okla.

McKay kicks player off team

Staff Report Aaron Johnson was dismissed from the UNM men's basketball team Sunday by head coach Ritchie McKay. "I am disappointed to announce the dismissal of Aaron Johnson from our men's basketball program due to a violation of team policy," McKay said in a news release.

Volleyball team ends losing streak

Staff Report A nine-year losing streak went down the drain Saturday when the UNM volleyball team beat the Utah Utes. The last time the Lobos beat Utah was 1996, a span that included 17 straight losses to the Utes. With the win, UNM improved to 9-3 on the season - one win short of the team's total last year.

UTEP upsets Lobos' winning streak

by Daniel S. Archuleta Daily Lobo The UNM football team's hopes of a perfect season were put to rest in a 21-13 loss to the University of Texas-El Paso Miners on Saturday night. A crowd of 50,425 - the fourth largest in Sun Bowl history - were on hand, most of them covered in orange with a little spot of red for the game.

Duo takes first in doubles

by David J. Chavez Daily Lobo The No. 3 doubles team in the country showed why it's ranked so high this weekend at the Lobo Fall Invitational. The UNM women's tennis duo of Iva Gersic and Maja Kovacek beat the No. 21-ranked pair of Robin Stephenson and Ashley Bentley from Alabama 8-3 to take first place in the doubles competition.

Staff Report The UNM men's tennis team came up short of winning a title at the Denver Invitational on Saturday. After getting off to a strong start in the early rounds of the invitational, none of the young players were able to continue the momentum.

Cautious in the heat of victory

But it didn't matter because things worked out how the Lobos wanted. "Because of the heat and the humidity, we had to get some guys more minutes," said head coach Jeremy Fishbein.

Even after a move from across an ocean, some things don't change. "We've known each other for around 12 years now," Gersic said.

Lobos trample Aggies as record crowd cheers

by Daniel S. Archuleta Daily Lobo The UNM football team picked up a 38-21 victory over the New Mexico State Aggies on Saturday, making the season 3-0 for the first time since 1997. A record crowd of 44,760 showed up to watch the Lobos dispose of the Aggies.

Senior scores two game-winning goals

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Two goals in the first home tournament of the season mean a lot to Cody Hanna. Especially since they happened to be two game-winning goals for the UNM men's soccer team in a 1-0 win against James Madison University on Sunday and a 3-2 win against Wisconsin on Friday.

Moore breaks rushing record

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo Despite quarterback Kole McKamey assuming the role of primary rusher, tailback DonTrell Moore managed to muster up enough yards to break the UNM career rushing record against New Mexico State University on Saturday. A record crowd cheered for Moore as he stepped into the UNM record books, but he may have been one of the only people in the stadium who did not know he did it.

Cross Country Cross country head coach Matt Henry held his top runners from competition Saturday at the Kachina Classic to let them rest for the Stanford Invitational next weekend. That didn't stop those who represented UNM from faring well at the meet held in Las Cruces.

Colorado stampede crushes Lobos

by Justin Goodrum Daily Lobo After beating 13th-ranked Wyoming in its season opener, the Lobos rugby club team wanted to continue their winning ways on Saturday. UNM didn't get its wish when it fell to the Colorado Buffaloes 45-24. New Mexico controlled the momentum early in the first half with three placekicks to have an early lead over the Buffaloes 9-0.

Team hopes to surf wave of wins on home turf

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo The senior captain on the UNM men's soccer team stopped just short of guaranteeing two home wins this weekend for the Lobos. "We haven't lost a game at home since the UNLV game my sophomore year," Brandon Moss said. "In a sense, it's almost two guaranteed wins.
