Freezing out competition

by Travis Weber Daily Lobo At 4-1, the UNM Ice Wolves are off to the best start in the club hockey team's history. The team started its season three weeks ago when it traveled to Austin, Texas, to partake in the annual Southern Methodist University's invitational tournament.

Lobos prep for monster offense

For the fourth time in five games the Lobos will be on the road as they face San Diego State University on Saturday. The Lobos are 4-0 in San Diego and 15-8 in the month of October.

Making history despite losses

Staff Report The Lobo volleyball team was unable to get a whole lot going against a tough 16th-ranked BYU team Saturday. The Cougars swept all three games, solidifying their place as one of the top teams in the nation. It was the first time the Lobos had been shut out this season since Sept 3.

Loss in overtime shocks soccer team

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Jeremy Fishbein has seen only one loss at home in his four years as head coach of the UNM men's soccer team. That's because he wasn't there Sunday for the Lobos' 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose State University Spartans.

Future looks bright for tennis star, wide receiver

Chavez Daily Lobo Iva Gersic - There are a few UNM athletes ranking among the best in the nation, but one stands out like a student walking around campus wearing a New Mexico State Aggies jersey - only Gersic stands out in a good way. Gersic gets better every season and shows no sign of becoming another women's tennis player who is stuck somewhere between being ranked in the top 100 and getting a new career.

Four athletes seize the chance to strut their stuff

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Chelsea Sondrup - The middle blocker for the UNM volleyball team has been part of a team that's already had its best season under four-year head coach Kelley McKee - and there's still at least 12 games left. Sondrup's penchant for sending volleyballs back to opposing teams with return-to-sender stamps has helped her set the career record for blocks this season.

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Coming into the 2005 season, the Lobos were picked to finish second in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll. After a three-game losing streak, the team has a mediocre record of 3-3 and sits tied for fourth place with the University of Utah in the MWC.

Coach, Lobos play the blame game

by Kristie Boudwin Daily Lobo UNM football head coach Rocky Long said it was not the fourth-quarter fumble or a lack of execution that derailed the team Saturday in its 27-24 loss to Brigham Young University. It was poor coaching. "We got a bunch of great guys on our football team and they come to practice every day and they work hard," Long said.

Women's soccer The UNM women's soccer team clawed its way back from being two goals down, but couldn't hold on to the tie as it lost 3-2 to the University on Utah on Saturday in Salt Lake City. The loss came two days after the Lobos had their biggest upset win in the program's history.

Loss of key runners no sweat to Lobos

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo The UNM women's cross country leader went down early in Saturday's race, but that didn't stop the team from outperforming most of the field at Auburn. Senior Jacquelyne Gallegos, the Lobos' top runner, was forced to drop out of the women's race with a hamstring injury.

Rookie mistakes leave room for growth

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo The UNM men's tennis team failed to capture a title at the Balloon Fiesta Invitational this weekend. That does not mean the home tournament was completely unsuccessful for the Lobos, though. Freshmen Johnny Parkes and Graeme Kassautzki played in the Flight A division of the singles this weekend, and both advanced to the quarterfinals.

Lobos lose 27-24 to BYU

by Daniel S. Archuleta Daily Lobo The UNM football team lost a heartbreaker of a Homecoming game to Brigham Young University 27-24 on Saturday night at University Stadium. The Lobos surrendered a 24-13 lead they held early in the fourth quarter. UNM head coach Rocky Long took full responsibility for the loss.

UNM battles it out on slippery terrain

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo The UNM men's soccer team forgot its armor, swords and maces Sunday against the Denver Pioneers in Denver, but still managed to come out with a 1-0 win. "You add a fiery bunch and a field that was bumpy, and it turns into a war instead of a soccer game," said junior Andrew Boyens, the Lobos' central defender.

Lobo runners step out on MWC to get leg up

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo Head coach Matt Henry is sick of seeing the same old regional opponents. That's why the Lobos will travel to Auburn, Ala. - to try to get some momentum going into the upcoming Mountain West Conference meet. "We're traveling a long way this week, and we're actually doing that on purpose," Henry said.
