Golfer swings winning streak

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo The UNM women's soccer team might not have any All-American players on its roster, but there will be an all-star joining them as a coach next season. Kristen Graczyk, a two-time All-American in 2003 and 2004 at the University of Connecticut, has signed on as a graduate assistant coach with the Lobos.

Homegrown drafts get better end of deal

What have you done, Manu Ginobili and Dirk Nowitzki? Shame on both of you. Because of you two, NBA general managers, coaches and executives salivate thinking they'll land your foreign counterparts. Sucks for people like Danny Granger, Hakim Warrick and Ryan Gomes.

Lobo track star leaves for pros

Matt Gonzales' career at UNM ended with no first-place finishes in national championship meets. He came in second at the 2004 NCAA Championship cross country meet and third place in the 10,000-meter run at the 2003 NCAA Track and Field Championships. He's not too happy about it either, especially since he's now an ex-Lobo, Gonzales said.

Column: NBA finals lacking excitement

The NBA Finals are going to a seventh game for the first time in 11 years, and I've never been more bored. Pistons versus Spurs. Lots of assists, jump shots and team play. Just what the NBA doesn't need. NBA Commissioner David Stern might have you fooled into thinking that we want teams like this in the finals.

UNM faces hurdles at meet

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo Sometimes the ball - or maybe in this case the shot put, javelin or track cleat - doesn't bounce your way. UNM track and field head coach Matt Henry knows that better than anyone after the NCAA Championships, which ended June 12.

Women's Frisbee flies on the field

They wanted something that had an appealing quality to it but was also tasteful. That was the idea behind the nickname "Bombshells" for the UNM women's ultimate Frisbee team. "Frisbee girls' team names are kind of goofy like that," junior Katie Marconett said.

Goalie makes move to majors

by Riley Bauling Daily Lobo He might be the first, but if UNM men's soccer head coach Jeremy Fishbein has anything to say about it, he won't be the last. Departing Lobo senior goalkeeper Andrew Weber became the first men's soccer player under Fishbein to make a Major League Soccer roster.

Taking it to the 10th degree

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo One just isn't enough. For junior decathlete Dan Feltman, he likes ten times the challenge of a normal track and field athlete. "I get bored if I just do one event," he said. "I always like a good challenge." On the way to his first NCAA Championship appearance, Feltman is about to take part in the biggest meet of his career so far.

From Zambia to UNM green

Zambia is more than a stone's throw from Albuquerque. That distance didn't stop senior Madalitso Muthiya from making the trip to join the UNM men's golf team. It didn't hurt that there were some incentives as well. "New Mexico has good weather, good facilities and they also gave me a good scholarship," Muthiya said.

High stakes and hazards

Between seeing punctured lungs and people paralyzed, it's no wonder UNM pole-vaulting coach Scott Steffan says the sport appeals only to risk takers. Steffan's got two athletes who fit that bill perfectly. Junior Derek Mackel and freshman Whitney Johnson said they pride themselves in being a bit over the edge.
