Lobos recieve No. 13 seed at NCAAs

The UNM men's soccer team's season has been a lot like a game of cards. And the team just got dealt its final hand. Despite a No. 1 national ranking in the Soccer America poll, the Lobos received a No. 13 seed in the NCAA tournament. UNM gets a first-round bye along with home-field advantage for one game with the top-16 seed.

Balling till he's falling

Do not fear Lobo fans, I'm here to dispel the myth that women's basketball is just like men's played underwater. Speaking of which, Phil is fresh off a trip to NCAA headquarters to debate Title IX. He was escorted by security off the premises after marching back and forth wearing a snorkel and a pair of, as he calls them, "cute" Speedos while holding a sign that read, "If I wanted synchronized swimming, I'd watch the Olympics.

Bench sees time in Lobos' easy win

Sean Phaler, all spiky hair and pointy elbows, put on a show for the fans who stuck around to watch the Lobos mop up in their 93-53 beat-down of Western New Mexico on Friday night. For the Lobos, it was an easy win leading into their big Monday night matchup at Oregon.

Lobos head for nationals

by Steven Fernandez Daily Lobo The Lobos are finally at full strength for their biggest meet of the season. They have missed at least one of their top seven runners at every race they have competed in this year but should have all of their runners healthy and ready to go for the NCAA Championships in Indiana on Monday.

Lobos secure ticket to tourney

The UNM men's soccer team ended its regular season in all too familiar fashion Sunday against the San Jose State Spartans. The Lobos got the game winner in the 12th minute from the nation's second-leading goal scorer Jeff Rowland. His 18th goal makes Rowland one goal shy of UNM's single season record set by Edmundo Rodriguez in 1992.

Guards lead UNM to NABC Classic title

Mark Walters built the lead and Kris Collins kept it as the Lobos beat Duquesne 82-74 to cap the NABC Classic. The Lobos are 3-0, their best start since the 1998-99 season. UNM built an early cushion for themselves after going up 17-11 early in the game.

Column:Annual handball tourney humbling

The aroma floating around this weekend in Midtown Sports and Wellness was hard to ignore. It smelled of sweat and hot rubber and barbecue and beer all blending together in the air. It smelled like handball. This weekend was the annual Dog Bowl Classic, a tournament held every year in Albuquerque that draws players from all around the Southwest.

Lobos lacking best runner

The Lobos head into this weekend's NCAA Mountain Region Championships with their season on the line and one of their best runners out of commission. Freshman Shadrack Biwott, the 2004 Mountain West Conference champion, is too sick to compete after coming down with a stomach virus.

Lobos test bowl hopes at BYU

Bowl eligibility will be on the line when the Lobos take on Brigham Young tomorrow in Provo, Utah. Head coach Rocky Long is meeting a familiar face in the matchup. If fans recognize BYU's defensive scheme, it is because Cougars' defensive coordinator Bronco Mendenhall coached under Long from 1998-2002 and understands the UNM strategy.

Player vs. Player - Riley

A few weeks into the NBA season and I say - strike that - declare, that I'm ready to unleash my clairvoyance once more, much to the chagrin of Phil. Speaking of which, Phil's been a little salty as of late. Ever since Girl Scout Troop 19 humiliated his team at the YMCA last week in the semifinals of a local dodgeball tournament, he just hasn't been that cheerleader in the newsroom we're all used to.

Player vs. Player - Phil

Three days ago, the serenity of the sports desk was sent into a tailspin when Riley stormed into the office and demanded a trade. Unhappy with his writing time and pay scale - "I got a family to feed, yo!"- Riley insisted I find another publication more suitable to his talents.

Football team feeling the burn

As the football season enters its final stretch, players are feeling the excitement of postseason pursuit. They are also, however, feeling the aches and pains that come with a long and physical season. "Guys are definitely more banged up this time of year," head coach Rocky Long said.

Big first half spurs Lobo win

There's a good reason rust isn't one of the colors of the UNM women's basketball team. Well, sort of. The Lobos ripped the West Coast All-Stars in an exhibition game at The Pit on Tuesday, 85-55, but a sloppy second half proved the team has some work to do before it suits up for its regular season opener at New Mexico State on Nov.
