An eager, energetic crowd of more than 900 came to cheer on the UNM women's soccer team in its home opener against Arizona State University. Unfortunately the equally energetic Lobos were unable to grab the victory, falling to the 23rd-ranked Sundevils 2-1 at the UNM Soccer Complex.

The Wright stuff

On the first play from scrimmage, University of New Mexico tailback Quincy Wright proved that he is a man to be reckoned with this year. Wright shaked and baked his way through the middle of the Weber State University defense and scampered into the end zone for a 34-yard touchdown run 19 seconds into the game.

Postseason repeat a priority for UNM

The Lobos, winless in regualr season play, entered the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament seeded eighth in the eight-team league and proceeded to win three games in four days - including a 3-2 first-round upset of regular season champion California State University at Sacramento.

Wolfpack sacks UNM in opener

North Carolina State University quarterback Philip Rivers threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as the Wolfpack handed the Lobos a 34-14 loss in the season-opening Black Coaches Association Bowl game in Raleigh, N.C. The Lobos (0-1) fell behind early, mostly due to the heroics of Rivers, who finished the game 15-of-24 passing for 276 yards, with just one interception.

Lobos ‘no-names’ aim for respect

For some college football programs, not having a solid starter at a position is seen as a sign of instability. Not so at UNM — particularly on defense. “Any position that has a lot of competition and has quality players, I don’t think that’s a problem spot at all,” head coach Rocky Long said recently.

A Long talk about the ’02 season

Entering his fifth year as head coach of the UNM football program, it appears that Rocky Long finally has things down. In person, Long gives the appearance of a man who is comfortable with himself and his surroundings. And how could he not be? After all, he is coaching his alma mater.
