Women's Basketball: Strong defense helps Lobos overcome sluggish start against UTEP

It looked very much in doubt about midway through the first quarter, but the University of New Mexico women's basketball team turned up the defensive intensity to shift things in its favor and won its fifth straight game by taking down UTEP at Dreamstyle Arena on Wednesday. New Mexico (6-1) was down early, struggling to take care of the ball and, even when it was able to do so, couldn't seem to put the ball in the hoop. UTEP had no such trouble.

Men's Basketball: Lobos crushed by New Mexico State

Chants of “Judas” and “You’re a sellout” filled the air of the Pan American Center in Las Cruces on Tuesday evening. Other ill-natured chants about the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team filled the air, too. Inevitably, the negativity directed at UNM and its head coach had a grueling effect on the outcome of the game: A 100-65 thrashing on the road courtesy of rival New Mexico State. It was the largest margin of victory in the series since a 37-point win from UNM more than 50 years ago.

Women's Basketball: Lobos prepare to take on UTEP

The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will look to build on its four game winning streak when it welcomes the UTEP Miners to town on Wednesday at 7 p.m.. The Miners are 2-5 on the season and have lost five straight, most recently at home to Arkansas State last Saturday. However, those five losses have come by a combined 14 points, including losing by one on Saturday. It’s the first time in program history that the team has lost five straight games by five points or less. The Miners have already played New Mexico State, the one common opponent between the two this year, and lost by five at home, the first game of the losing streak

Women's Basketball: Lobos win big over the Aggies

The New Mexico Lobos cruised to an easy victory over New Mexico State on Saturday at Dreamstyle Arena behind a big first half run in a game that finished 83-58. The Lobos played probably their most complete half of basketball of the season in the first half against the Aggies. Things were close early on, until the Lobos put together an impressive 17-point scoring run that saw NMSU held scoreless for over seven minutes of game action and build a 20 point lead that set up the rest of the game. “I thought from about the five minute mark in the first quarter until about five minutes left in the second quarter, defensively we were really good and converted down there in transition” head coach Mike Bradbury said.

Men’s Basketball: Lobos head to Cruces to face NMSU

The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team will head to Las Cruces on Tuesday evening to face in-state rival, New Mexico State. It’s the second meeting between the two teams this season, as the Aggies (6-1) defeated UNM (4-1) at the Pit on Nov. 17, 98-94, behind a big night from AJ Harris. He led his team with 31 points and made all six of his 3-point attempts.

Men's Basketball: Lobos improve to 4-1 with road win over Bradley

The University of New Mexico men’s basketball team collected another win thanks, in part, to some sharp-shooting from the 3-point line. Senior guard Anthony Mathis poured in seven 3-pointers en route to scoring a game-high 23 points to lead his Lobos to an 85-75 victory over the Bradley Braves on Saturday evening. New Mexico entered the game as the second-best 3-point shooting team in the nation, hitting at a 47.9 percent clip. That percentage took a hit, but UNM made good on 12 of its attempts from long range.

Women's Basketball: Lobos to host Aggies for early bragging rights

The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will look to build off an upset win over the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, Dec. 1 as they take on the New Mexico State Aggies in the first of two matchups between the teams at Dreamstyle Arena — The Pit at 2 p.m.. The Aggies are 4-1 so far this season, with the team’s only loss coming against Abilene Christian on Nov. 20 in Las Cruces. NMSU is ranked No. 1 in the country according to the NCAA’s official RPI rankings and is the highest rated team in the Western Athletic Conference. Last time out, they secured an easy victory over Northern New Mexico, 101-51.

Women's Basketball: Hurst goes off in Lobo win over Oklahoma

The Lobos knew that Ahlise Hurst could shoot — she had showed it in practice, she just hadn’t exhibited it in a game yet. Hurst tied the freshman scoring record with 39 points in a performance that Nike McClure said should be a warning to the Mountain West as the Lobos clawed their way to a hard-fought 84-80 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners on Wednesday evening. “That was incredible,” McClure said of Hurst’s performance. “This is going to give her the confidence she needs to shoot her through the rest of the season, especially as a freshman. I think you guys need to watch out for her in the Mountain West these next couple of years because she can shoot from anywhere.”

Women's Basketball: Robertson garners MW Player of the Week

Aisia Robertson has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week for her performance on Saturday against the University of Houston, the New Mexico Women’s Basketball team announced today. Robertson recorded a quadruple double, scoring 28 points, dishing 11 assists and pulling down 11 rebounds to go along with 13 turnovers in the Lobos double-overtime win against the Cougars. UNM produced a video with some highlights of her performance that can be found on Twitter.

The University of New Mexico Lobos finished its season on Saturday afternoon with a 31-3 loss, the team’s seventh straight of the season. Men's Basketball: Mathis leads second-half Lobo charge to wear down UTEP

The University of New Mexico men's basketball team did not get off to a great start against the UTEP Miners on Saturday, but erupted in the second half to earn an 84-78 victory. It took nearly four minutes for either team to get on the scoreboard, but UTEP's Kaosi Ezeagu broke the stalemate with a layup at the 16:16 mark to open things up. The Lobos remained scoreless for over seven and a half minutes before Vance Jackson made good on a 3-point attempt. A little past the midway point in the first half, more than 11,000 fans at Dreamstyle Arena were likely in disbelief. The Lobos had still managed to score just the lone basket and UTEP sophomore guard Evan Gilyard had stuck a pair of 3-pointers in transition following blocks that gave the Miners an 14-3 advantage.

Women's Basketball: Lobos emerge with double OT road win

The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team went into Houston and picked up its first road win of the season, 89-84. It took two overtime periods to finish the job. The Lobos led for much of the game, though never by very much, with the largest lead coming in the second quarter at 13. Familiar faces led the attack for the Lobos, as Aisia Robertson recorded a quadruple double in points, assists, rebounds and turnovers. Jaisa Nunn, fresh off a performance against Hartford that earned her a Mountain West player of the week award, recorded her second straight double-double, finishing the day with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Football: Lobos host Cowboys in season finale

The disappointment has struck in a variety of ways — three loses at home, three on the road. New Mexico (3-8, 1-6 Mountain West) has been blown out on multiple occasions, but also squandered a comfortable lead against San Diego State and lost on a last-second field goal to Colorado State. UNM's home record this season is also an abysmal 1-4, with the Lobos’ lone home win coming against Incarnate Word in their season opener. The only conference victory came against UNLV, which is also 1-6 in the Mountain West and 3-8 overall.

Men's Basketball: Lobo commit signs National Letter of Intent

There are plenty of new faces on the University of New Mexico men's basketball team, but the search for new talent is always in the works and the squad inked another baller to help bolster its roster next season. The recruiting season is seemingly never over and head coach Paul Weir and his staff were able to get a commitment for the 2019-20 season when Emmanuel Kuac signed his National Letter of Intent (NLI) to become the team's first projected incoming freshman of the class. New Mexico has benefitted from recruiting international players, especially with its ability to tap into the Australian pipeline of talent. From Luc Longley to Cameron Bairstow to Hugh Greenwood and now Makauch Maluach — the team has hit on several impact players.

Women's Basketball: Lobos bounce back with win over Hartford

The University of New Mexico Women’s Basketball team beat the Hartford Hawks on Sunday, 72-65, in a close game that had no business being that way. The Lobos lead by as many as 20 with less than three minutes left in the third, and by 17 at the start of the final quarter of play against a Hartford team that they seemed to have figured out, with an increase in defense pressure from UNM forcing six Hawks turnovers in the third quarter, and the Hartford press, which had given the Lobos some trouble early on, was no longer very effective.

Cross Country: Women earn runner-up finish at NCAA Championships

The University of New Mexico women's cross country team had high expectations, a No. 1 ranking and an NCAA National Championship to defend on Saturday morning in Madison, Wisconsin. But UNM came up a little bit short in its bid to repeat as national champions — earning a second-place finish on Saturday. It was the ninth consecutive season the women have recorded a top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships. New Mexico probably couldn't have put itself in a better situation. The squad had seen Zimmer Championship Course twice already this season, taking third place at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in September and winning the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals last month.

Men's Basketball: Late comeback bid by Lobos falls just short

Fans of the University of New Mexico Men's Basketball team saw an underwhelming performance for much of its match-up with rival New Mexico State on Saturday at Dreamstyle Arena — The Pit, watching their team drop a 98-94 contest. Head coach Paul Weir credited the Aggies for playing the way they did and said NMSU's A.J. Harris had an outstanding individual performance — perhaps the best he's seen on that court since coming to Albuquerque. Weir took responsibility for the loss when asked if there was one reason besides Harris that caused the Lobo loss. "I think at the end of the day, we're not as far along as where we need to be 18 months into me being here, and that's on me," Weir said. "So if there is one reason, it's Paul Weir."

Football: Balanced attack leads Broncos to 45-14 win over Lobos

A career night from wide receiver Sean Modster helped propel the Boise State Broncos to a comfortable 45-14 victory over the New Mexico Lobos in Albuquerque on Friday night. “First of all, we played a team that was clearly better than us,” head coach Bob Davie said after the game. “We had a hard time stopping them, although we did fight.” The Broncos wasted no time getting on the board, scoring on the first drive from scrimmage. BSU went down the field in six plays, driving 75 yards in less that three minutes, as Brett Rypien capped off the drive with a 15 yard pass to Sean Modster for the touchdown and the 7-0 lead.
