The regents announced the five finalists for the position of University president at a meeting Wednesday. Under state law, the regents have to wait a minimum of 21 and a maximum of 30 days after naming the finalists before selecting a president. Jamie Koch, president of the regents, said the Board of Regents will try to name a president within 22 or 23 days.

Every day, they have meetings with people from all over campus. They carry their table and banner out to go to talk to UNM students about important issues that they are working on, and they don't leave their office until 9 or 10 p.
As the University searches for a president and a replacement for regent Sandra Begay-Campbell, we should be thinking about what is best for the future of UNM and who will take us there. Running the University as if it were a business seems to be the regents' top priority.
Editor, It is becoming increasingly likely that some form of breakup will occur to the nation-state of Iraq. The breakup will reflect the relationships among Iraq's Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish groups, and the relationships of these groups to the central government - which in turn have consequences on the region.
A 35-year-old man was arrested Monday after shooting at a police officer and taking a hostage in an apartment building near UNM, said Trish Hoffman, spokeswoman for the Albuquerque Police Department. The incident ended with no injuries at about 2 p.m., when police entered the Kachina Apartments at 301 Harvard Drive S.E. and arrested Jay Ulibarri, Hoffman said.

It seems to me that an organization that registers students to vote, helps inform them and then gets them out to the polls on Election Day is helping UNM students become responsible citizens.

The UNM swimming and diving team planned to give its departing members a victory in its home finale. However, the visiting Utah Utes were unwilling to make any concessions on UNM's Senior Day.
The Institute of Public Law, a division of the UNM law school, requested $60,000 Saturday to start a UNM chapter of NMPIRG. The money would come from the Student Fee Review Board, which allocates money from student fees to UNM departments.
