Students should question pot-smoking classmate
November 9Editor, Last week before class, a classmate approached me smoking marijuana rolled with tobacco in cigarette form. Once in class, the student announced that the Military Commissions Act of 2006 literally removed the Bill of Rights from the U.S. Constitution, with the exception of the Third Amendment.
Affirmative action bad way to gain diverse faculty
November 8Editor, This is in response to Caleb Fort's article in Tuesday's Daily Lobo. First, I agree with the statement that white professors outweigh professors of different ethnicities. I do not see this as a positive or negative thing, though - it is just the way things are.
Rolling up sleeves to fight against flu
November 8Jo Antreasian, a nurse at the Student Health Center, said getting a flu shot can make a big difference in keeping people healthy.
Honor veterans, troops on the upcoming holiday
November 8Editor, This Saturday is Veterans Day. It's our chance to pay tribute to the men and women who served and are serving our country. Take time to remember those who gave up part or all of their lives to serve freedom, whether domestic or abroad, peacetime or wartime.
Lack of religion, morality cause of America's decay
November 8Editor, Has anyone noticed a hasty trend in our downward-spiraling society? Has anyone seen the lustful smirk of noonday thieves as they chisel away the fibers of our freedom? Has anyone wondered why moral decency has been alarmingly eroded from our society's foundation? We are fed up with our nation's favored pillars of avarice, lust and other self-indulgent practices.
Student campaigners go behind the scenes
Caleb Fort | November 8Helping political campaigns is like being part of a sports team, said student Billy Gupton. "You get very invested in the candidates," he said. "You get to meet the candidates, and you really begin to personally hope that they win." Gupton has helped with several Republican campaigns in New Mexico and other Western states.
Off the bench and in the zone
Steven Fernandez | November 8In his first two years as a UNM men's soccer player, Mike Porter spent a lot more time watching than playing. But in his sophomore season, Porter helped anchor a Lobo defense that is one of the most elite in the nation and helped UNM advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Madrid, Wilson are not fit to represent young voters
November 8Editor, Tuesday was Election Day. I considered voting by absentee ballot or driving down to my district so I could vote, but in my view, there is no candidate good enough to choose. I have been following the Wilson and Madrid race going on in this district, and while it would not be affected by my vote, if the choice were given to me, I do not think I would want either of them to represent me.
Tim Duncan's selfless play just the Thing to help Spurs clobber all foes
Riley Bauling | November 8I love superheroes. I still like dressing up as some variation of them for Halloween, whether it is Drunk Batman who remembers his tool belt but forgets his mask, cape and Batsuit; Safe-sex Superman who hands out green condoms he claims to be laced with Kryptonite, the best STI defender of all time; or Captain Afghanistan, the Captain America of the Middle East.
Since UNM is drug-free, it should be smoke-free
November 8Editor, I was a student at the Gallup branch of UNM. However, I still read the Daily Lobo. I just want to say that I think the Albuquerque campus should be smoke-free. I am not a smoker, and the smell of secondhand smoke is really annoying. UNM should not just be a drug-free campus, but smoke-free as well, for the good of all the students.
Role models are plentiful among diverse teachers
November 8Editor, I completely disagreed with the article in Tuesday's Daily Lobo about minority enrollment and UNM's faculty. Does the UNM Fact Book include the faculty of the mathematics and statistics department? Does it include the faculty of the foreign languages and literatures department? If not, then maybe it needs to be revised and edited to include all these faculty members.
Jewish author backs FDR
November 7Author Robert Rosen, who was invited, uninvited and reinvited to speak at UNM, talked to about 20 people Monday in Woodward Hall about his book, Saving the Jews.
Wilson was good for NM, but she's failed us on Iraq
November 7Editor, Republican incumbent Rep. Heather Wilson has served New Mexico well, with a very distinguished career in the U.S. military and U.S. government. Wilson was the first female military veteran to serve in the U.S. Congress. Wilson is smart and hardworking.
Tis the season to see overhyped Hollywood flicks
Joe Buffaloe | November 7It's that time of year again - Oscar season.
Daily Lobo spotlight
November 7Christa Sena Junior Elementary education Where do you want to teach when you graduate? I'd like to teach at Holy Ghost School. I am working there now, not really working, but aiding. It is a private school. It's Catholic. Why do you want to teach? Actually, I started out as a music major, and I ...
White faculty exceeds minority enrollment
Caleb Fort | November 7There are not enough academic role models for African-American students at UNM, said student Kimerie Smith.
