Editor, I'm not a big fan of television, and I didn't watch the Emmys on Sunday. However, in addition to the awards show itself and all the red carpet nonsense, there appears to be quite a few people angered at the broadcasting of the opening skit. In a parody of ABC's "Lost," Conan O'Brien boarded a private jet for Los Angeles that ended up crashing on a deserted island.
Pulitzer Prize-nominated author and photographer Lucian Niemeyer said it does not make a difference to him if he wins the award. "I am just a messenger - just a very small person in this whole thing," he said. "It is the people in Africa that need rescuing, help and attention."
The past year has been somewhat of a wake-up call for some of us. Sin Serenade drummer Noel Marcos Armijo said it was an honor to play at this year's Fall Crawl. "It is nice being around and growing up with musicians around here - being friends with all the bands and bringing music to all the people who are walking around," Armijo said. The Weekly Alibi hosted its 15th Fall Crawl Downtown on Saturday. Sin Serenade, a local country-punk band, performed at the District Bar and Grill. Armijo said it was the fourth time Sin Serenade participated in the event.
Former UNM President Ferrel Heady was involved with his community and took action on a personal level to advance his institution, said Ted Martinez, one of Heady's colleagues. "No matter where he was or who he was dealing with, he was always concerned about others' welfare," Martinez said. Martinez spoke at a memorial for Heady in the SUB on Saturday. Heady died Aug. 17 at age 90. He was the president of UNM from 1968 to 1975 and was known for keeping the campus under control during the years of student protests. Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, Heady's neighbor, declared Aug. 26 as Ferrel Heady Day throughout the state of New Mexico.
Double overtime, 110 minutes and still no score. The No. 3 UNM men's soccer team settled for a scoreless draw with the University of Portland Pilots on Saturday at Merlo Field in Portland, Ore.
I am amazed at the over-simplified view some people can take on matters of life and death. To suggest that peace movements and activists promote war demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the fundamentals of war. War is the last bastion of the incompetent, and while occasionally necessary, it is always wrong.
I write in response to the letter by L.H. Crum published in Thursday's Daily Lobo. As associate director of African-American Studies, I helped Finnie Coleman in the hiring process. When Crum states that David Hilliard is "not qualified," he implies that Coleman, the dean, the University and I have done something illegal. This is not true. According to the faculty handbook, persons with no degree but with exceptional experience are qualified to join the faculty as lecturer II.
I am writing in response to the letter by L.H. Crum in Thursday's issue of the Daily Lobo. I am enrolled in one of the two classes taught by David Hilliard, entitled "Black Panthers to Hip-Hop: Community Activism and Service Learning." I want to start by saying that this is my last semester at UNM, and I could not be luckier to have this opportunity to take a course with Hilliard.
UNM's women's soccer team started the season by overpowering Canisius College for a 3-1 win on Friday but fell to the University of Akron 1-0 on Sunday in the championship game of the Caroline Pardee Invitational in Akron, Ohio.
The UNM volleyball team finished third in this weekend's Hilton Albuquerque Volleyball Classic. The Lobos opened the tournament with a 3-1 loss against the Utah State University Aggies on Friday. UNM rebounded for a 3-0 win against University of California-Riverside before falling 3-1 in its final game against tournament champion Stephen F. Austin State University on Saturday.
I would like to reinforce Luna's complaints in Friday's issue of the Daily Lobo about hidden class fees. I have been attending UNM for five years now, and I've noticed that much corruption has infiltrated UNM's economy. For instance, I paid nearly $300 for only two engineering books that I had to purchase. Furthermore, when I took Physics 161, I was forced to pay about $48 for a signaling device and an access code. But what truly caught my attention was a $15 fee for a direct deposit refund. Instead of paying this absurd fee, I waited for my check to arrive in the mail.
I understand Emily Luna's concern about the price of textbooks and access codes. Students face many challenges, and it is important to make sure that education remains accessible.
One of the many failings of our educational system is that it sends people out into the world who cannot tell rhetoric from reality.
Last season, Dylan Rose-Coss was not one of the most recognizable faces on the UNM cross country team. This year, Rose-Coss may be expected to contribute a whole lot more.
I have a question for the Daily Lobo about articles like the one that appeared on Aug. 23 about Professor Mohamed El-Genk's research at UNM. How did the Lobo choose that article, and why did it not point out that his research is mainly funded by the military for new weapons, especially nuclear power for space weapons? This is well-known fact, yet the story helps make UNM appear uninvolved with war profiteering - a white wash of a very critical matter.
