Letter:Caldera fails to educate, puts UNM's image first

Editor, I am concerned with President Caldera's characterization of the problem facing the University of New Mexico. I never graduated from high school. I scrambled from humble community-college beginnings to ultimately receive a highly competitive fellowship at UNM's Latin American and Iberian Institute, and for the past several semesters have taught precisely the student population at issue in the Daily Lobo's story on the proposed stiffening of UNM admissions criteria.

Evergreen Terrace album no Homer

by Ali Patterson Daily Lobo It would be hard to argue that "The Simpsons" hasn't affected our culture. Few Americans don't recognize Homer's signature "D'oh!" The influence of this cartoon stretches into the music realm, and at least three bands have spawned and named themselves after something Simpsons-related.

Letter:Doubting Bush gets one labeled America hater

Editor, The world just keeps getting more and more bizarre. The pathology affecting the psychotic morons who control it get more illogical and hypocritical every day. In the last few weeks, the Bush administration criticized Newsweek for running a story about interrogators at Guantanamo Bay flushing the Quran down the toilet - not that such an incident occurred, but that they ran the story.

Column: 'Sith' caps a painful decline

We can only blame ourselves. When George Lucas set out to make his space opera in 1977 he had no idea of the response it would have. Through a clever storyline, groundbreaking special effects and the mysteries of the Force, Lucas made a movie that had a very large impact upon a generation of filmgoers.

Editorial:UNM shouldn't shun remedial students

A group of students, teachers, regents and community members have sent UNM President Louis Caldera back to the drawing board. Caldera decided last week to review his proposal to defer the admission of potential students who require remedial coursework, largely because of the aggressive and negative public response and lack of support from UNM regents.

Letter:Four Corners power plant threatens all NM citizens

Editor, There will be a rally on June 18 at Shiprock Park in Shiprock to help stop the proposed Desert Rock Power Plant in the Four Corners area. This is an important issue I believe should be covered by the media. Albuquerque residents are not part of the Four Corners region, but the proposed Desert Rock Power Plant is a coal-fired plant that would emit 3,400 tons of mercury and ozone into the air - this would affect Albuquerque's air - so this is not just an environmental justice issue for the residents of Four Corners, but a public health and safety issue for us all.
