Film examines capital punishment

by David Barnes Daily Lobo The documentary "Deadline" tells the story of Republican former Gov. George Ryan who granted clemency to 171 people on death row in his last days in office. "With this film, we were interested in finding a story that was going on in a contemporary way that would help us to understand what is happening with capital punishment now," director Katy Chevigny said.

Letter: Gallery closure shows an indifference to art

Editor, I write this letter in response to the infuriating news that the Art Student Association gallery in the Student Union Building is soon to be replaced with a workout room. I'm not sure why ASUNM is hell-bent on destroying all of the cultural enclaves of the flagship university in New Mexico, but it is doing a bang-up job.

NIN album a taste of the familiar

by Matt Gomez Daily Lobo Nine Inch Nails' latest release is a mouthful of the same pop-industrial formula the band has relied on for so long. The group's mastermind and main contributor, Trent Reznor, didn't risk anything on With Teeth. The album is laced with familiar, industrial-sounding programmed rhythms, distorted guitar chords and delicate piano parts.

Sin City a gritty, action-packed ride of a comic

by Manuelita Beck Daily Lobo If you've seen the movie "Sin City," then you probably know the most important thing about the graphic novels: You either love them, or you hate them. The conversations I overheard while leaving the movie theater after "Sin City" were the same ones I've heard in comic shops and on message boards.

Primates past their prime

by Phil Parker Daily Lobo Every morning Telle takes ibuprofen for his arthritis. Then he might go for a swim in his hot tub. Telle is one of the monkeys who live on top of Logan Hall. Professor John Gluck brought the monkeys to UNM in the early 1970s so he could study different aspects of their behavior. It's not a bad life for four old primates - all between 25 and 30 years old - who spent their early years as the subjects of numerous social experiments. Stump-tailed monkeys are incredibly smart animals, capable of solving memory puzzles or dismantling equipment, Gluck said. Telle is the lone male of the four stump-tailed monkeys living on the roof of UNM's Logan Hall. Still relatively active for his age, Telle's pruned red face looks tired, and he's missing clumps of hair in spots. He walks slowly, and his eyes don't exactly dart in all directions. Lala, Donna and Milly also while away their days in the fenced-in holding area, where they can jump around suspended platforms or climb in and out of massive plastic tubes.

Letter: Officials shortsighted in plans for student gallery

Editor The student-run Art Student Association's gallery in the Student Union Building has been UNM's tragedy for many years. It is no surprise that UNM and ASUNM are willing to convert the poor space it does provide into a gym. The UNM Art Department is well-known and well-respected around the country, but not here on its own campus.

Letter: Letter writer ignores facts with blatant nationalism

Editor, That the president of a Turkish student association feels compelled to profess nationalistic loyalty and deny the Armenian genocide almost a century after it took place indicates how massive and ubiquitous Turkey's propaganda machine really is. As long as the Turkish nation keeps blaming the victims of this atrocious event, it will be unable to come to terms with its past.

A cow's guide to politics

by Dustin Habermann Daily Lobo columnist Every couple of months or so, someone sends me an e-mail that purports to explain the world of economics and politics through the model of two cows. While silly and mildly informative, it usually is unabashedly propaganda for capitalism, so I would like to re-write the model in a way I feel is more accurate.
