COLUMN: Use vote to voice your dissent

A deficiency of intelligent self-expression exists amongst the e-generation. Problematic with our complacent consumer culture is that we have lost the skills of dialogue and of open rebellion and contempt for the establishment and for the status quo. Where have the Allen Ginsbergs gone? The John Lennons? The Janis Joplins, the Eldridge Cleavers and all the other contrarians of the formative 1960s?

News in brief

President Bush asked Congress Thursday for authority to "use all means," including military force if necessary, to disarm and overthrow Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein if he does not comply quickly with United Nations demands that he abandon all weapons of mass destruction. Separately, the White House pressed reluctant allies Russia and France to support a U.N. Security Council resolution authorizing force.

LETTER: Youth should learn from consequences

First let me say that I do not necessarily believe that abstinence education will really help matters any, unless handled in a certain way, but I disagree with what Elizabeth Gross has to say.

Leaning a solid and consistent CD

One of the most popular and prominent local bands, Feels Like Sunday, has an amazing amount of talent and humility. The band has released two albums. The first was Tedious Bliss, and just this August, Leaning Against the Wind came out. Leaning Against the Wind is a remarkable album, despite the poor production.

Lagwagon Let's Talk About Leftovers

Lagwagon is undeniably one of the most persevering and consistently kick-posterior punk bands to surface in the 90s. The band has compiled more than 20 tracks of catchy, emotional, funny and inspired songs for their re-issue of Let's Talk About Leftovers.

COLUMN: Air Force hospitality warm

by Richard M. Berthold Daily Lobo Columnist Given what I went through last fall and how many times I was labeled a traitor or un-American or - worst - a liberal, there is a wonderful sense of irony in the fact that I was chosen to participate in the Air Force's Distinguished Educators program last July.

Rentention scores high in '02 statistics

University College Dean Peter White said that UNM is already making large strides in retaining students - a statement backed up by the official 2002 enrollment report. "A lot of students are under the impression that we have a very bad problem with retention rates and I don't think that's any longer true," White said.

Copley's debut record Limited by mediocrity

When did journal entries become acceptable as poetry or advertising copy or song lyrics? Someone please tell me so I can figure out how someone like Marc Copely got a recording contract. This 20-something songwriter's debut Limited Lifetime Guarantee is awash in poor lyricism that was no doubt lifted directly from the man's battered, yet banal loose-leaf notebook.

Quest to guard forests a battle

SANTA FE - People might not single out John Horning as executive director of Forest Guardians. In short pants, sandals and untucked shirt, the 35-year-old Horning looks more like a laid-back English lit major than the passionate and committed point man for an aggressive environmental organization.
