Women’s Basketball: Lobos to host Boise State

On Wednesday, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will host the Boise State Broncos, in a battle of the final two remaining teams unbeaten in Mountain West play. Boise State, so far this season, has posted an 8-5 record and a perfect 2-0 record in conference play. The Broncos’ first win in conference play came at Colorado State, a game they won 62-58, and their most recent win was against UNLV at home, where they won 69-60. For the Lobos, their most recent wins, both in Mountain West play, came on the road against Air Force, where they won in decisive fashion, 88-59. At home against Nevada, a game UNM was down by as many as 12 points rallied back with a big third quarter to win, 72-68, to move the team to a 14-1 record overall. Last season, the Broncos posted a 2-1 record over UNM. The Lobos’ lone win came at home, and their losses came on the road in Boise and the conference tournament opener in Las Vegas—a tournament the Broncos went on to win. Overall, UNM trails Boise State 6-10. And at Dreamstyle Arena, the series is split 3-3.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos narrowly defeat Nevada at home

It wasn’t pretty. And it certainly wasn’t easy. But the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team, with a resurgent second half, pulled out a narrow 72-68 victory over the visiting Nevada Wolf Pack on Saturday afternoon at Dreamstyle Arena. “Give Nevada a lot of credit,” UNM head coach Mike Bradbury said. “They are, one, very talented and two, extremely well-coached. ... That said, I’m very proud of our kids. I thought the last quarter and a half we really competed and found a way to win.” Nevada, (8-5, 1-1 Mountain West) by the half, had a four point advantage. And nearly halfway through the third quarter, the visiting team had a 12-point lead over the Lobos (14-1, 2-0 Mountain West). But a string of five 3s, in the last five minutes of the third quarter, helped the Lobos end the frame with a 52-48 lead. In the third quarter alone, senior guards Alex Lapeyrolerie and Tesha Buck each contributed two made 3-pointers, while freshman guard Madi Washington hit the other.

Review: G-Eazy appends lackluster discography

If you’re in search for a meaningful record, one with compelling lyrics and clever word play, then “The Beautiful & Damned” is definitely not your album. Bay Area rapper Gerald Earl Gillum, a.k.a G-Eazy (not to be confused with talented artists such as Jeezy or Eazy-E), has been on a constant mainstream rise since the 2014 release “These Things Happen”, in which his painfully annoying track “Mean It” made a brief appearance on the airwaves On December 15th, G-Eazy then released into the world what is more or less a carbon copy of his last album. In an excessive 20 tracks, split up onto two physical CDs, Gillum covers familiar ground and gives little to no progression to his personal style or musical capabilities. With rhymes as simplistic as "look, cook, book, took" etc, one might think a 3rd grader was learning how to write poetry.

Men’s Basketball: Lobos to travel to Nevada

Winners of three straight—including, most recently, its conference opener against Air Force—the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team will travel to Nevada to take on the Wolf Pack in its second Mountain West game this season. Most recently for the Lobos (6-8, 1-0 MW) was a win over the Falcons, beating them decisively, 87-58, at home. In that game, UNM saw scoring from a wide variety of players—including all of its bench. Leading the way in that game was junior guard Jachai Simmons, who had a game-high 15 points off of the bench. He put on a show, creating highlight reel dunks, while also, nailing back-to-back 3s.

Women’s Basketball: Nunn helps Lobos dominate Air Force in conference opener

Colorado Springs, Colo. — The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team(13-1, 1-0 MW) overcame a slow start to blow out the Air Force Falcons (0-12, 0-1 MW) 88-59 thanks to an 18 point and nine rebound performance from Jaisa Nunn in the conference opener. In the first quarter, the play was much more even than the teams' records suggested. Nunn scored the first two of the Lobos’ baskets, and it looked like she would be able to take advantage of her size advantage over the Air Force defenders. However, the Falcons were able to adapt and force the Lobos to look to another option, as they were able to control the tempo. Able to play their style, AFA fed Kaelin Immel the ball, and as a result she led all scorers after one quarter with six points.

Men’s Basketball: Lobos open up MW play with win over Air Force

Conference play for the University of New Mexico men’s basketball team went according to plan: with a win over visiting Air Force, 87-58, to open up Mountain West action. The Lobos (6-8, 1-0 MW) struggled early on—especially most of the first half—though they were able to claim a double-digit victory at home. UNM saw a plethora of double digit scorers, even in the unlikeliest of places. Junior Jachai Simmons, who had a ton of highlight reel dunks, scored a game-high 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting, while also hitting 3-of-4 3-point attempts (all in the second half). Junior guard Dane Kuiper had 13 points, senior forward Joe Furstinger had 12 points. Junior Anthony Mathis had 11 points and senior guards Antino Jackson and Sam Logwood each had 10 points.

Women's Basketball: Lobos travel to Clune Arena for first game of conference play

The University of New Mexico women’s basketball team (12-1) travels to the United States Air Force Academy Thursday to take on the Air Force Falcons (0-11) at Clune Arena in the first game of conference play. The Lobos are riding high following a 90-58 win over Lamar in the team’s final non-conference tuneup. Tesha Buck led the way for the Lobos in that performance, scoring a school record 40 points behind a conference record of 10 three-pointers. She also added seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. The Lobos’ only loss this season came on the road against Oklahoma, but the rebound performance against Lamar got UNM back on the right track.

Men's Basketball: Lobos to host Air Force for season's first Mountain West game

The University of New Mexico Lobos (5-8) will host the Air Force Falcons (6-6) on Wednesday night at Dreamstyle Arena, The Pit, in the the first game of Mountain West play for both schools. The Falcons are lead by coach Dave Pilipovich, who is in his sixth season at the Academy. Air Force is coming off of a 111-68 victory over Johnson & Wales at home and shared one opponent with the Lobos in non-conference play in Colorado. They suffered a similar fate in Boulder, as both teams lost to the Buffaloes.

Keller celebrates interfaith, preps for year ahead

Timothy “Tim” Keller’s first term as the mayor of Albuquerque began nearly a month ago, and he has already gotten to work. He has signed his first bill, which awarded 284 pre-kindergarten children with $900,000, and he has begun restructuring the Albuquerque Police Department, according to a City of Albuquerque web post. Keller is currently concentrating on evaluating the city, department by department, and APD is on the top of his list, he said.

Women’s Basketball: Buck’s record-shattering performance helps UNM defeat Lamar

With the help of a new conference high 10 made 3-pointers in a game by senior guard Tesha Buck, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team defeated Lamar soundly at Dreamstyle Arena, 90-58, in the team’s last non-conference appearance of the regular season.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos prep for matchup with Lamar

In its last non-conference game of the regular season, the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team will host the Lamar Cardinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The matchup between the two squads can be a high-scoring affair — the Lobos rank 12th in the nation for scoring, while Lamar (5-4) is just three spots down at the No. 15 in scoring. For UNM (11-1), most recently, the squad came off of a loss at Oklahoma, where the team was pummeled in a 105-63 defeat. Before that loss, the Lobos tied a program record for consecutive wins during anytime in a season, winning their first 11 games of the season.

Men’s Basketball: Lobos to host Rice on Tuesday

It will be a battle of 3-8, as both UNM and Rice will enter Tuesday’s contest at Dreamstyle Arena posing identical records. The Lobos, who just lost to now-ranked No. 21 Arizona 89-73 at the Pit on Saturday, have dropped their last four in a row. They also haven’t won a game since Nov. 29, when they defeated Evansville by 19 points. All of their losses this month have been by double digits, with the exception of a closely contested battle at home against New Mexico State—a game they lost by three points. The Owls have won one and lost three games in the month of December, with their lone victory coming at home against St Edward’s. Most recently Rice lost to currently ranked No. 21 Texas Tech on Saturday 73-53. The two teams, who have met six times in their history, used to play in the Western Athletic Conference together. Four of those games came during that span and, overall, UNM has held a 4-2 lead in the series. At the Pit, the series has been split, with both Rice and UNM winning twice there.

Women’s Basketball: Lobos lose first game of the season

Things didn’t go as planned for the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon. And the absence of junior post Jaisa Nunn surely played its part too. After a disappointing showing in Norman, Oklahoma, UNM (11-1) lost to the Sooners in decisive fashion, 105-63, marking the team’s first loss this season. In place of Nunn, freshman post Antonia Anderson made her first start of her career. Without Nunn, though, UNM’s offense faltered. In total, the Lobos made 27.4 percent of their shots from the field, compares to Oklahoma’s 47.1 percent shooting performance. The first quarter wasn’t a pretty one for the Lobos, after leading by seven points nearly three minutes into the game. And, later in the quarter, Oklahoma (5-5) went on a 15-3 run to take a 28-12 first quarter lead. It wasn’t much different in the second half, as Oklahoma continued to pummel the Lobos. Nearly seven minutes into the frame, the Sooners pulled away by 34 points, but UNM managed to diminish that Oklahoma lead to 31 points by quarter’s end, when Anderson nailed both of her free throws.

Football: Tyre Brady's flu game performance leads Marshall to NM Bowl win

Marshall wideout and redshirt junior Tyre Brady won the game’s offensive MVP award after putting up 165 yards receiving and a touchdown on just six catches Saturday night in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. The touchdown came on a 76-yard pass in the second quarter that opened the scoring. Brady missed the final three games of the regular season due to an injury and made his presence felt immediately in his first game back. A Miami transfer, he was The Herd’s leading receiver this season, racking up 777 yards and seven touchdowns in 10 regular season games, and he was glad to be back on the field.

Men's Basketball: Late flurry not enough as Lobos fall to No. 23 Arizona

A big performance from Dane Kuiper and a second half resurgence wasn’t enough for the University of New Mexico men’s basketball to pull an improbable upset over No. 23 Arizona Saturday night. And the 13,207 fans in attendance at Dreamstyle Arena made a lot of noise, but it did not seem to faze the Wildcats as they closed strong down the stretch.ould not will their team back after it fell behind. Arizona improved its record to 8-3 after enduring a late surge by UNM to secure an 89-73 win, behind big performances from a handful of players and an impressive shooting performance as a team.

Football: Marshall holds off Colorado State to win New Mexico Bowl

The Marshall Thundering Herd (8-5, 4-4 C-USA) held off a fourth quarter comeback attempt from the Colorado State Rams (7-6, 5-3 MW) to secure their sixth straight bowl victory by a score of 31-28 in the 12th Annual Gildan New Mexico Bowl on Saturday afternoon at Dreamstyle Stadium. The first quarter was the controlled by the two defenses, as neither team was able to put points on the board or produce much offense at all. Marshall’s defense was able to stifle the Rams and held their potent attack to only 57 yards. CSU quarterback Nick Stevens struggled to find Biletnikoff finalist Michael Gallup, who only caught two passes in the first quarter. Things weren’t much better for The Herd, who produced 68 yards of total offense

Men's Basketball: Wildcats return to Albuquerque to face Lobos

The New Mexico men's basketball team will get a big test on Saturday when it hosts No. 23 Arizona for the first time in almost 19 years. New Mexico (3-7, 0-0 MW) has lost thee straight games and seven of its last eight—the lone victory coming against Evansville in a 78-59 home win. In its last game, UNM let a nine-point lead slip away and fell to New Mexico State 65-62. UNM senior Sam Logwood missed that game against the Aggies after taking a leave of absence from the team, which was a surprise to many. He has since announced he is ready to return to action, but his status is uncertain for Saturday's game—though head coach Paul Weir indicated it was unlikely Logwood would play.

Men's Soccer: Herrera signs pro contract with Real Salt Lake

Aaron Herrera of the University of New Mexico men’s soccer team has signed a professional contract with Real Salt Lake of MLS, the club announced today. Herrera just completed his third season for the Lobos, lead the team with five goals and five assists during the 2017 campaign and briefly was moved up top from his natural right back position in an effort to stimulate a stagnant Lobo attack. In his three seasons at UNM, he appeared in 54 matches, scoring seven goals and tallying eight assists. Prior to the 2017 season, Herrera was a member of the United States Men’s National Team that appeared in the Under-20 World Cup.

Football: Colorado State and Marshall to square off in 12th annual Gildan New Mexico Bowl

The Colorado State Rams (7-5, 5-3 Mountain West) take on the Marshall Thundering Herd (7-5, 4-4 C-USA) in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 2:30 p.m. at Dreamstyle Stadium. For Colorado State, this marks the team’s second trip of the year to Albuquerque, as they defeated New Mexico 27-24 on October 20. The Rams come in to the New Mexico Bowl touting an impressive offense that ranks in the top 10 nationally. The Rams are led by senior quarterback Nick Stevens and wide receiver Michael Gallup. Gallup is one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, which is given annually to the top receiver in the nation. He leads the Mountain West in both receiving yards and receptions, in addition to being in the top four nationally in both categories.
