Football: Two-QB system highlights team captains

New Mexico football has named its four team captains for the upcoming season, and the selections are unprecedented in more ways than one. The team elected senior linebacker Dakota Cox, safety Daniel Henry and the two starting quarterbacks from last season, Austin Apodaca and Lamar Jordan.


UNM will be issuing a mandatory training program to all faculty and staff that will cover discrimination and harassment policies. The training is an in depth animated course that will have to be completed by December 31, 2016.

UNM rolls out new mandatory employee training

UNM’s new mandatory employee training on sexual harassment and misconduct covers a wide variety of material with real-life scenarios. Intersections: Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, is the new safety course outlining UNM policies on sexual violence, gender-based discrimination, sexual orientation, health status, race, domestic violence, and stalking. The course is to be completed by all UNM faculty and staff by December 31, 2016. The new course includes artful design and animation and replaced the old Preventing Sexual Harassment training in March 2016. UNM’s Human Resources website states that the State of New Mexico’s Risk Management Division as well as the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that discrimination and harassment training be provided to employees on at least an annual basis. The one hour training informs employees about their responsibility to report incidents, UNM policies, and available resources.

Men's Soccer: Strong spring season hopes to translate to fall

If the fall exhibition season is anything like the spring, the UNM men’s soccer team will be in good shape. Less than a week into their official fall training, the Lobos are getting ready to begin the preseason. They will get three matches over three dates, starting with University of Nevada Las Vegas on Monday, continuing with Fort Lewis on Thursday and finishing with Washington on Saturday.

Column: WWE finally gives Ziggler his opportunity

The WWE Brand Extension coalesced nearly a month ago but the lasting impact is still being felt. A clear beneficiary of the brand extension was one Dolph Ziggler, a midcarder that was toiling around in the background before coming to the forefront of the main event scene for SmackDown just in time for SummerSlam. Ziggler will be facing off against WWE Champion Dean Ambrose for the title.

Football: Stadium enhancements designed for fan enjoyment

By Robert Maler Seeing a favorite team or alma mater take the field is all the incentive most college football fans need to go out to a game, but New Mexico's faithful fans can start looking forward to some additional benefits that aim to enhance the game day experience in 2016. The New Mexico football season kicks off in less than three weeks, with its home opener against South Dakota on Thursday, Sept. 1.

UNM campus visited by different kind of bird

Students will arrive to campus in droves for the beginning of the fall semester next week, but UNM campus had a more unusual visitor on Sunday evening. Pedestrians gathered around the perimeter of Johnson Field as a Black Hawk rescue helicopter deliver an injured man from the Sandia Mountains at approximately 7:30 p.m.

A copy of the UNM Office of Equal Opportunity investigative report obtained by the Daily Lobo uncovers the specifics and details of the sexual harassment and discrimination case against associate professor Cristobal Valencia, who was recently suspended for the second time since March in light of new information.

New efforts implemented to combat opioid abuse

The federal Indian Health Services program recently announced a new policy to be implemented when prescribing opioids in IHS-operated facilities. IHS Principal Deputy Director Mary Smith said this involves doctors and other medical practitioners checking State Prescription Drug Monitoring Program databases before prescribing, and even dispensing, opioids for pain treatment lasting longer than a week.

Men's Soccer: Lobos look to right the ship in 2016

After a long summer break, players and coaches returned to Robertson Field for the first official Lobo men’s soccer practice of the season on Wednesday morning. “I’ve been anxiously awaiting today and came away feeling great. I really like this team,” said head coach Jeremy Fishbein. “Energy levels were good today. The players where fit, sharp, unified. All you could ask for, for a first practice.”

Fleck appointed new director of Water Resources Program

According to a UNM press release, John Fleck has been named director of UNM’s Water Resources Program. Fleck, a professor of practice in water policy and governance in the Department of Economics, has been the Water Resources Program’s writer-in-residence since January 2015, according to the press release.

UNM again recognized for Industrial Security excellence

According to a University press release, UNM again been recognized with a prestigious award from the Department of Defense Security Service for Industrial Security excellence. UNM is one of a select number of nationwide facilities to receive the 2016 James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award, according to the press release.

ART looks to beautify ABQ with native plant species

In collaboration with the Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry’s office and ABQ Ride, Albuquerque’s largest architecture firm, Dekker Perich Sabatini, has been brought on to design the landscaping surrounding the upcoming Albuquerque Rapid Transit project. Construction is set to begin this month with the plans focusing on the landscaping of the medians and designing transit system's stations.

Tennis: Search for next head coach comes to a close

Change doesn’t necessarily mean some things can’t stay the same. New Mexico completed the search for a pair of new tennis head coaches. Although there will be some new faces at the helm, a pedigree of success is something the new hires can continue to build on.

Heading Home helps homeless children lead normal lives

The nonprofit organization Heading Home has started a crowdfunding campaign, entitled “Scholar Dollars," to help children who were recently homeless live normal lives. “Kids are young and need to be able to get out there,” said project director Megan McCormick, herself a single mother of three children.
