In recent weeks the Albuquerque community came together to mourn the death of Victoria Martens, a 10-year-old brutally murdered under the watch of her mother. Some faculty at the University of New Mexico say a faulty system is to blame.
After trailing early in Thursday’s season opener at University Stadium, New Mexico hit its stride after making some big plays in all three phases of the game. The Lobos registered plenty of explosive plays on both sides of the ball, but it was a pair of big plays on special teams that seemed to shift the game’s momentum.
As patients wait longer and longer to be seen at UNM Hospital, the University is beginning the early planning phases for a new replacement adult hospital that aims to alleviate the long lines and overcrowding.

In a recent conversation with a friend about NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick's refusal to stand for the national anthem, my friend questioned Kaepernick's sincerity. Last week, UNM’s Board of Regents held a special meeting with the Alumni Association to discuss communication between the two organizations in the wake of communication failures which led to a stalled on-campus project costing five times more than was estimated. As a result, the regents are extending their reach of involvement into the association, just months after reintegrating Health Sciences Center governance under the regents' oversight.
UNM is launching the first undergraduate degree program in population health in the country, allowing students the chance to study in a field that is particularly vital in the country. The College of Population Health was formed last year, and is rolling out its first major program this fall.

Not panicking turned out to be the best strategy for the Lobos. New Mexico (2-2) recorded its second 2-0 shutout of the weekend after taking down the Cal Poly Mustangs (0-4) on Sunday night to emerge victorious from the TLC Plumbing and Utility Invitational.
It wasn’t a perfect weekend, but New Mexico closed out the USF tournament by dominating Western Carolina on Saturday afternoon. UNM made the trip to Tampa, Florida despite the threat of Hurricane Hermine, but the six teams who made the trip to the Sun Dome were not affected by the weather.
Saturday’s preseason meet featured competing spots, community runners and high school competitors as UNM hosted the Lobo Invitational. Many of the starters for the men and the No. 1 defending national championship women’s squad were sidelined to prepare for the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 30, when meet results officially count towards standings.
New Mexico put on a shooting clinic in its trip to Weber State on Friday afternoon, but to no avail in a 0-0 tie to Weber State. Right off the bat, the Lobos began to threaten Weber State (1-1-1) by ripping off three shots – two on goal – but sputtered at the danger zone for the Wildcats.
Three double-doubles were not enough for New Mexico in game two of the USF Tournament on Friday night. Sophomore Carson Heilborn, alongside seniors Julia Warren and Devanne Sours, individually posted a solid outing against South Florida, but UNM (4-2) couldn’t close in the second match of the day after taking down Stetson 3-1 in the first contest of the day.
New Mexico shut out California State University, Northridge in hits home opener by a 2-0 count on Friday night. Not only was the contest UNM’s (1-2) first home game on the year, but it was also the Lobos’ first victory.
As if defending a national championship wasn’t big enough, the women’s cross country team heads into the 2016-2017 campaign as the No. 1 team in the nation. The target on UNM’s back does not intimidate head coach Joe Franklin, he said in a phone interview. The preseason rankings are nothing but a token of respect from what his team was able to accomplish last season.
The petition for a on-campus taproom at UNM has gathered much attention recently, and University administration say they are open to a campus-wide discussion on safety and sensibility if students did have the opportunity to drink alcohol on campus grounds. UNM senior Gus Pedrotty started the petition, entitled "Install a Taproom at the University of New Mexico, on Change.org.
UNM has teamed up with La Montanita Co-op to offer a new $1,000 scholarship beginning this month for students minoring in Sustainability Studies in the Department of Biology, according to a University press release.
According to a University release, Duane Arruti, currently Director of IT Applications, has been selected to fill the position of Interim Chief Information Officer at UNM. After conducting a limited internal search, Executive Vice President for Administration David Harris announced Arruti will serve in the interim role, according to the release.
A group from the University has received a nearly $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation for development and research on developing a way to produce solar cells using nanotechnology, according to a UNM press release.
