"[UNM BeKind] started this about 15 years ago, and its really just to promote kindness, being courteous, safety and even gratitude. For people to be reminded that each and every day is a good day to help someone or make them feel better if they are having a bad day." Heather Dyche’s first full recruiting effort netted eight new players to the New Mexico women’s soccer team, UNM announced on Wednesday. During National Signing Day, the Lobos added players at every position: three forward, two defenders, two goalkeepers and a midfielder to replace seven graduating seniors, all from various positions. Dyche in a statement expressed her excitement for the 2016 recruiting class. “We think they will come in and push our current players for starting positions.

Last weekend the Lobos saw several athletes set personal records and hit marks that might be good enough to earn a spot at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. Nine schools competed at the New Mexico Team Invitational last week.
What with the top-tier Republican Presidential hopefuls falling over each other to pronounce how Christian they are, the enormous base of “Evangelicals” (what a pretty name for bigoted proselytizers) that they pander to is being emboldened even further into shattering the wall separating Church and State in places not just like Iowa.

It’s that time of the year again. Six new players joined the UNM men’s soccer team for the 2016 National Signing Day. But this isn’t just any group of players, Top Drawer Soccer ranked this Lobo recruiting class as the fifth best class in the nation.
Everyone at UNM reads, but the reasons for doing so vary. Students read textbooks because it’s required and instructors read because they do a lot of research. For a late span Tuesday night, a tight game morphed into a battle between UNM’s Tim Williams and UNLV’s Patrick Cornish. The teams played to a 70-all tie past the seven-minute mark in the second half. From that point to the final minute, only the forward Williams or guard Cornish saw the net. The two went back and forth, almost shot for shot.

Aerial “A.J.” Liese is a UNM alum who recently published a powerful memoir, “Three Promises For Jane: A True Story of Madness and Redemption.” Liese returned to UNM Wednesday morning to sign copies of her book and discuss the elements of the novel and her experience writing it.
Action towards progress was the unofficial theme of New Mexico’s 2016 Anti-Racism Day, held in the Capitol’s Rotunda, on Wednesday. The celebration was proclaimed by Gov. Susanna Martinez earlier this year, and it was organized by the New Mexico Health Equity Working Group (NMHEWG), Senator Linda Lopez and Representative Javier Martinez.
A current project by UNM's Physical Plant Department (PPD) aims to increase water conservation numbers on campus. This comes on the heels of the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority's recent announcement that daily water usage per capita is at a record low of 127 gallons for the area in 2015. Katherine Yuhas, water conservation officer for the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority, said this is largely due to widespread education on water resources throughout the community via television, radio, classroom presentations, field trips and more.
New Mexico student-athletes have been making noise in the classroom in addition to their performance for their respected sports programs. On Monday, UNM announced five UNM programs set cumulative GPA records for their respected teams. Men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s skiing, and both men and women’s track and field all fielded program-bests for their GPAs in fall of 2015.
It’s no secret that homelessness has been a growing issue in Albuquerque, with 1,639 homeless individuals identified in the city in 2011 alone, according to cabq.gov. Albuquerque Rescue Mission hopes to assist this population by creating 132 housing units for men and women in its "life transformation programs," Albuquerque Rescue Mission's Communications Coordinator Steve Ulibarri said. He said the final product will be dorm-style units with common dining areas and described the project as having two phases.
For many people, the joy of books is a simple one. Typically, they serve as a quiet form of entertainment that stimulates the mind by allowing readers to experience the story in their heads. They are nothing more than “movies for the mind” to many.
UNM Graduate and Professional Student Association President Texanna Martin said GPSA will work with students this semester to ensure their voices continue to be heard on fee changes, including proposed mandatory online fees and differentials for the School of Engineering, as well as any other issues that may arise. GPSA will also be participating in UNM budget discussions and will continue to voice the students’ sentiments about the mandatory fees, she said. “We will continue to serve students as their advocates, so please remember we are your elected representatives, and are here to serve you,” Martin said.
Against Rice earlier this year, UNM had free throws late in the game but couldn’t finish them. Against Auburn, UNM had two possessions to prevail but threw the ball away and took a bad shot. Based on the results from the last two games, those days appear to be over. For the second straight game UNM found a way to finish a high-scoring, back-and-forth contest, surging past UNLV 87-83 at WisePies Arena.
