Transient “Christmas spirit” is a farce

Yay, the Holiday season is finally over — that time of the year when most Americans pretend to go along with all that “peace on earth, good will toward men” crap. What a sham. I’m annoyed that so many “good Christians” can totally ignore the teachings of Jesus Christ for eleven and a half months out of the year and then suddenly decide to care about other people for two weeks. They call it the “Christmas spirit.”

Men's Basketball: Greenwood breaks Broncs

Insert Hugh Greenwood’s name and a metaphor for a combustible element here. After the New Mexico point guard hit his fourth of five 3-pointer against Boise State, phrases involving Greenwood being on fire popped up consistently on Twitter.

Women's Basketball: Lobos drop the ball vs. Fresno

Excessive turnovers and foul trouble have been plaguing the New Mexico women’s basketball team, as the squad looks to minimize careless errors. The 19 turnovers committed by the Lobos on Saturday played a major role in a heartbreaking 75-73 loss at home against Fresno State (11-6, 5-1 Mountain West).

Lottery funds at risk this semester

The upcoming state legislative session may determine how much some UNM students pay for school this semester. According to an email sent out by the UNM Financial Aid Office, the New Mexico Higher Education Department believes “current available funds for the Legislative Lottery Scholarship may be insufficient to cover the spring 2014 semester.”

Dr. Pegs Prescription

Winter in New Mexico brings a double-dry-whammy. The air in our high desert is dry to begin with, and between the cold temperatures outdoors and the heated air indoors, our poor skin suffers this time of year. You know what I mean. The scaly hands, the cracked fingers, the rough soles.

Many corporations will self-destruct from misregulation

Editor, Cancerous regulation is required to maintain the pay of the overpaid. It’s funny to think that a hyper-efficient organization could value an entity over 100 times another, when the most complex system we know of — the human body — only allows about a times 10 multiplier for our brain.

Same-sex couples should learn about Social Security aid

Editor, When New Mexico legalized same-sex marriage, it also opened the door for married gay and lesbian couples to receive an array of federal retirement benefits. Married gay and lesbian couples are now entitled to apply for the same Social Security benefits that had been only available to heterosexual married couples.

Theater Review: Young directors’ plays are so-so

The hardest things to write about are the unspectacular ones. Without anything to praise or criticize, to connect with or discuss, the most these mediocre moments really elicit is an apathetic shrug. Nothing exactly is terrible about “By the Sea, By the Sea, By the Beautiful Sea,” even the flat repetition; but neither is anything great about it.

Sometimes bands like to jump right to the point with their name — and contemporary American emo bands are no exception. While not as over-the-top as artists like The World is a Beautiful Place and I’m No Longer Afraid to Die, Orlando natives You Blew It! have found a crossroads among self loathing, shouting vocals and twinkling melodies.

Men's Basketball: Fouls, free throws plentiful in Lobos' win at Fresno State

With the number of fouls called in New Mexico’s 89-78 win at Fresno State on Saturday, one can’t help but wonder if the referees ran out of breath when the final buzzer sounded. Both teams combined for 52 fouls in the game, and Fresno State’s 27 fouls resulted in 29 made free throws on 41 attempts by UNM. That’s three more successful foul shots than the Lobos made from the field. On the other end, UNM committed 25 fouls and Fresno State drained 26 of 33 free throws.
