Basketball: Legislators hit the paint to bring relief for cancer patients

Last Monday night, the Rio Grande Rivalry was put on the back burner as the Lobos and Aggies joined up with New Mexico Senate and House legislators to generate funds for cancer. The 2018 Hoops for Hope event saw Democrats and Republicans alike, play and support each other as the participants helped raise money for the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center's patient assistance program. But it wasn't just political rivals who put their differences aside — there were also two opposing college football coaches who played a hand in the action by leading the legislators turned basketball players for one night at the Santa Fe Indian School.

Men's Basketball: Weir wants attention to be on student-athletes, not him, heading into Rio Grande Rivalry

The New Mexico versus New Mexico State rivalry has been going on for well over 100 years, but there will be a new wrinkle this time around as the Lobos will head to Aggie country with a coach some fans may not be thrilled to see back in the Pan American Center. First-year Lobo head coach Paul Weir said he didn't want to be the narrative of the story heading into the matchup against NMSU—the team he used to coach. But there will likely be plenty of focus on his return to Las Cruces, New Mexico and the reception he receives from the Aggie faithful. On one hand, he spent 10 years at New Mexico State, taking over as head coach for the school last season and guiding the team to a 28-win season. The Aggies won the Western Athletic Conference title and earned an NCAA postseason berth along the way.

Men's Basketball: UNM to host Nebraska-Omaha

The New Mexico men's basketball team throttled its opponent in the season opener and will look for a second-straight win to begin the season against Omaha. New Mexico (1-0, 0-0 MW) surged past Northern New Mexico on Saturday, Nov. 10, steam-rolling its way to a 147-76 triumph over the Eagles. Eight different Lobos scored in double figures as first-year Lobo head coach Paul Weir showed his willingness to implement a deep rotation. The head coach said each player was recruited to play a role on the team and it is essential to develop the young players throughout the season.

Men's Basketball: Lobos coast to easy victory over Northern New Mexico in season opener

The New Mexico men's basketball team saw marked improvement over its performance against BYU in last month's exhibition game, shooting the ball efficiently en route to a 147-76 whipping of Northern New Mexico. The 147 points was a program record for points scored in a single game and the 71 point margin of victory tied a school record as well. UNM (1-0, 0-0 MW) played harassing defense and forced turnovers to seize early control of the game and cruise to victory.

Men's Basketball: UNM looks for fresh start as new season begins against Northern New Mexico

New coach. New players. New sponsor. New season. Everything surrounding the upcoming basketball season seems to still have that new car smell as first year Lobo basketball coach Paul Weir looks to pick up a win in the season opener against Northern New Mexico. Saturday's game will mark the first game under a new era, being played in newly dubbed Dreamstyle Arena in front of a student section coined "the Howl."

WisePies Arena and University Stadium get new signs

For Larry Chavez, CEO of Dreamstyle Remodeling, last week was a dream come true, as the signs bearing the name of his company went up at The Pit and formerly known University Stadium. “It’s pretty incredible; when I saw the sign up at the stadium, I got goosebumps,” Chavez said. “I think it’s been told that my first job was selling sodas when I was 14-years-old at the stadium, so it’s been phenomenal. To see it on TV and read it in print, and one thing or another, it’s kind of surreal. It’s like a dream come true.” Last May, the University announced that Dreamstyle had pledged a $10 million gift as part of an agreement that both Wisepies Arena (aka The Pit) and University Stadium would be renamed after the company. There will be an initial payment of $1 million with annual payments of $900,000 through 2027.

Men's Basketball Q&A: Keyana Smith reveals how Lobos pursue academic success

A recent academic award for the New Mexico men’s basketball team may have had Lobo fans remembering some of the issues and the start of last season and pondering the simple question — how? Former head coach Craig Neal said he was disappointed in several things early on in the 2016-17 season, prompting him to shake up the starting lineup. He cited some of the issues having to do with effort on the court but also said there were players that were failing to meet expectations in the classroom. The players answered the academic call, setting a high standard for others to follow along the way. The team picked up the pace to secure a cumulative grade point average that reached 3.05. Tim Williams, who was a senior last season, said the players realized that if they didn’t take care of things in the classroom, there wouldn’t be basketball. He said they decided to really buckle down to get things corrected.

Men's Basketball: Former Lobo Tim Williams signs deal to play overseas

Former Lobo forward Tim Williams worked out for a few NBA teams, but found himself on the outside looking in after the draft. He still found a way to begin a pro career — multiple reports confirmed the big man signed with Atomerőmű SE, a professional basketball team based in Paks, Hungary. Although Williams will be thousands of miles away from the United States and likely adjusting to a vastly different environment, there will also be some familiarity.

Men's Basketball: Lobos near 1st place in Mountain West after beating Utah State

The Lobos have stretched their winning streak to four games with another Mountain West victory. New Mexico(13-8, 6-3 MW) took a 74-61 victory over Utah State Tuesday night, putting the team just half a game away from a first place standing in the conference. “We improved (Tuesday),” head coach Craig Neal said. “We are continuing to take one step forward. I’m really happy for the guys.” The Aggies fell to 8-11 overall and are just 2-6 in conference. Freshman Koby McEwen’s 17-point effort combined with Jalen Moore’s 14 weren’t enough to lift their team to a win.

Women's Basketball: Lobos' shooting comes up short against Texas Tech

Lobo women's basketball seemed to have left its magic shooting touch in Albuquerque, as the team shot a dismal percentage from the field en route to a 69-58 loss on the road at Texas Tech. New Mexico (2-1) has shown it likes to shoot the three, but on Sunday the deep ball just wasn’t there. The Lobos shot just 8 for 37 from beyond the arc, but still managed to keep the score close for most of the game. Both teams struggled shooting from the floor throughout. Texas Tech (2-1) made just under 35 percent of its shots (29 of 83), but the Lobos were even less efficient (23 of 80), connecting on just 29 percent of shots.

Basketball: UNM beats NMSU in first ever Battle of the Rio Alumni Grande

Even in an alumni basketball game, there is no love lost between New Mexico and New Mexico State. The inaugural Battle of the Rio Grande Alumni match showcased plenty of the physical play and edginess that a regular season contest between UNM and NMSU usually has. UNM battled through the chippy play to claim a 102-97 victory over NMSU at WisePies Arena aka The Pit Saturday night.
